Extend The Life Of Color Treated Hair

Keeping color treated hair from becoming dull and faded can definitely be a challenge. But, you as the colorist, can educate your clients on proper maintenance to keep their color looking fresh until their next session with you. There's a great product I have been hearing about by Goldwell®. It is the Goldwell® Dualsenses Color Lock Serum, and it can prolong color retention for up to 22 shampoos! It is used directly after coloring and is formulated with ColorChromaComplex, which instantly locks in color after the application.

Although we don't carry this item at the moment, check out some of these tips on making color last:

Shampooing - Advise your client not to shampoo their hair for at least 24 hours after the application. (Use warm water, not hot!) This will allow the dye to fully set in each strand. Also, shampooing too often will reduce the life of the color because it strips away the natural oils that protect the dye. Every other day at most is ideal. You can also retail dry shampoo to your clients for this!

Color hair one shade darker than desired color to offset fading.

Avoid Sulfates and Sodium Chloride - It is believed by some hair experts that sulfates may strip the hair, which will turn the color dull. Your client should stick with sulfate free products and products designed for color-treated hair.

Hats! - Your clients may not know that along with protecting your skin from UV Rays, your hair color will also benefit from protection. UV Rays can fade the color of chemically-treated hair! So advise your clients that when they are in the sun for prolonged periods of time, its best to cover up!

Limit Heat Styling - Excessive heat styling can fade color treated hair. If heat styling is a must, use a cooler setting when using a blow dryer or flat iron.

When hair is shiny, it can mask a dull color. Offer a gloss treatment to your clients in between coloring sessions.

Filling your clients in on these tips will keep them coming back to you time after time for all their coloring needs!
