Money With Milk And Honey!

September is National Honey Month! That makes now the perfect time to start thinking about and bringing in products to cash in (literally!) on treatments that focus on honey. Here is a great body treatment that generally sells for $100-125 and costs you less than $5.00 per treatment - my type of math!

Milk & Honey Body Treatment - this is excellent for moisturizing dehydrated skin, stress relief, calming of the skin and more!

In a rubber mixing bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of honey powder with 1 tablespoon of coconut powder and mix well. Add in 2 drops each of chamomile essential oil and jasmine essential oil. Mix well and place the bowl in a mud warmer, hot towel cabinet or stainless steel bowl filled with hot water.  Apply the scrub as you normally perform your body treatments.

If you have a hydrotherapy tub, after removing the scrub is an excellent time for a soak! Mix 1 tablespoon of buttermilk powder to 2 cups of hot water followed by 5 drops of chamomile essential oil. When filling the hydrotherapy tub, tilt the bowl slightly, hold under the faucet and slowly pour the mixture into the tub (go slow to avoid clumping!)

After the scrub and soak, finish off with this moisturizer to lock in all of the wonderful moisture!

Mix 2 teaspoons of wheatgerm oil with 2 drops of chamomile essential oil. Massage the oil into the skin and wipe off any excess oil to finish.

Strobing is the New Black...I mean the New Contouring!

What is strobing?! My thoughts exactly when I saw a recent article that deemed young Hollywood Starlets were ditching the rules of contouring for this new look. Essentially, strobing is the new fun term for highlighting. It's a way to contour the face by focusing on the areas that are meant to be highlighted to accentuate its features. These areas include the cheekbones, temples, down the bridge of the nose, above the cupid's bow, the brow bones, and even the corners of the eyes. I wouldn't be surprised if you've already had a few clients ask you to strobe them without you even knowing the term, let alone prepared for it! 

The best way to prep? Consider the face a canvas. If it's not properly prepared and smooth, the artist's painting could end up uneven and (somewhat) disastrous! Strobing is all about getting the perfect glow, so you will most certainly need to replenish your client's skin before you can get the perfect strobing effect. 





To start, it's definitely best for your client's skin to be completely moisturized beforehand. Prep their skin with a facial moisturizing mask like the Mandarin Moisture Masque we have from June Jacobs.

To prepare the skin further and enhance contouring, we have the Alchimie Forever Tightening Eye Contour Gel that can be applied to your client's eye contour area. This can help to reduce puffiness and firm the eye area to ensure stroing won't highlight tired eyes!






Once your client's skin is moisturized, it's time to apply the highlighter! You'll definitely want to make sure you have the proper tools. The Essential Essential Oils

I'm obsessed with aromatherapy and essential oils...and scented candles! I love walking into a business and being greeted by a lovely scent. It's one of the first things clients notice when they walk in....what they see, smell and hear are vital.

Are you using any essential oils in your entryway?
How about in services? Are you utilizing essential oils to enhance treatments? It can be a bit overwhelming with all of the different scents out there.

For general use for filling the main reception area or walk areas with fragrance, you can use synthetic or organic - whichever you prefer. I have spoken with many clients who try to keep the main scent in the business a subtle yet noticeable scent; you want clients to notice but not be turned off by an overwhelming scent. Light fragrances like ylang-ylang and blends like Peace & Harmony are excellent choices.

For use in rooms, you want to be sure not to choose scents that conflict with any scent(s) of the treatment. You don't want the phenomenal service to be marred by a displeasing mix of smells! You can always ask clients (I know some businesses that include this on their intake forms) what they like and don't like!

For use in services, you can pick and choose to fit your theme, the services, time of year...you can be pretty creative with this! Things like lavender, cedar, neroli and peppermint are all excellent choices.

There is also the option of choosing essential oil blends, or blending your own! The Complete Book Of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy is an excellent resource for all things essential oils.

Be sure to have tester strips available for clients to choose their own and to retail!

Mid-Summer Facial Idea: Aloe Vera

Mid-summer can be the perfect time to change up your spa menu! Summer isn't quite over yet, but it may be a bit too early to start adding Fall treatments. Let's Talk: Hyperpigmentation

What's the second most popular reason people seek a dermatologist after acne? Sunscreen - Not Just for Skin

When you hear sunscreen, I'm sure you and a lot of your clients automatically associate it with protecting the skin. I came across an interesting article recently that addressed if UV rays can damage nails. The answer was quite surprising! Frequent exposure to the sun can actually have damaging effects on nails which could potentially be permanent. This in part is due to the fact that the skin in the nail bed is very sensitive and thin.

Fractionated coconut oil is processed differently than regular coconut oil. The reason being is that the oil has been through hydrolysis then steam distilled to remove the long chain triglycerides. As a result, only the medium chain triglycerides are left which makes for a highly saturated oil. This means the oil is even more abundant in antioxidants and its natural disinfecting effects! Unlike virgin coconut oil, which solidifies in colder temperatures, fractionated coconut oil remains in liquid form. This is great for use as a massage oil, and to blend with essentials oils or even for use in handmade lotions and soaps. Another plus is that this type of oil has a longer shelf life and stability which makes it cost effective for your business.

Sunscreen 101

Summer is in full swing, and many of your clients will be out swimming, hiking, vacationing and enjoying the warmth outside! While everyone knows they need to protect their skin, and sunblock is a highly effective solution, are your clients educated on the different types of sunblock? It's no secret that the demand for men's services has been on a steady rise for quite some time. It was interesting to see a survey of the most poplar services among "millennial men" - ages 18-35. A survey done by the International SPA Association found that 47% of spa goers are men; almost half now!

Men are going in for more than just a cut, shave or massage.  Cosmetic procedures, facials and manicures are popular with this age group. Also popular, at 52% of the men surveyed, are anti aging treatments, acne and skin hydration issues.

Sleep Deprived Skin & How You Can Help

Explaining to your clients the importance of sleep in direct relation to healthy skin will garner a great conversation! Waxing Habits: How to Market to YOUR Clients

Recently, Waxing the City, a national franchise of waxing studios, polled 1,429 adults regarding their waxing habits. Their findings might be quite helpful to your spa or waxing business when trying to find the best marketing campaign for your clients. 

They found:

• 90% of waxing clients are women
• However, the numbers of men waxing is steadily increasing, with chest, back, eyebrow, and "manscaping" services being the most popular
• 1 in 10 waxers get a Bikini or Brazilian wax
• The largest share of Brazilians fell into the 18-24 age category
• As women age, they focus on waxing the more visible areas (eyebrows, chin, lip)
• Eyebrow waxing is the leading waxing service in the industry

What does this mean for your business? How you market your waxing services should be customized around your client demographic. If you see mostly younger clients coming in for waxing services, advertising your Brazilian and bikini services prominently will appeal to your clients. If your client base is an older crowd, you might want to focus more on the visible areas such as eye brow waxing. Also, if you are  seeing a larger male clientele, don't forget about them!
