Guy's Faces Need Love Too!
With the warmer weather springing (get it? Spring? moving on...) into action almost everyone is talking about skin care. Out with the cold and old skin, in with the warm and glowing skin! Now by almost everyone I mean, women. What about the men? We all have seen the rise of male oriented services (MANzillian, MANicure- not male specific but you get the idea, etc) and more men freely going in for treatments. So what's the deal with men not flying into the spa/salon with the hoards of women when the warmer weather begins creeping in?
My guess is they are not aware of the importance of spring skin care (c'mon, you know sometimes it takes men a little longer to fully grasp beauty benefits!)

Pain In The Neck...Massage Therapy News For Chronic Neck Pain

It's no secret that massage therapy is highly effective in the management of chronic pain. Are your client's coming in for long enough sessions frequently enough to gain the most benefit?
I was just reading a study done by the Annals Of Family Medicine that concluded multiple, hour long sessions every week are more effective in treating chronic neck pain than shorter or less frequent sessions. According the the Annals Of Family Medicine, neck pain is the 8th leading cause of disability in America and the 4th worldwide!
Do you find a majority of your clients coming in specifically for neck pain, or asking for extra attention on their neck? As with most things, prevention is key. Educating your clients on stretching, awareness of proper posture and of course regular massage therapy will ease their pain. Educating them on the effectiveness of weekly hour long sessions for chronic pain is huge. Within a few short weeks, clients who usually come in monthly or every few months should notice a decrease in their daily pain and hopefully, increased range of motion in their neck (generally speaking, not taking into effect specific injuries/issues).
As always, having effective items for your clients to use at home will aid in the pain relief (and endear them to you even more!)

A Rude Receptionist Could Be Killing Business
As busy day spa and salon owners, we are concentrating on the bigger picture (expenses, overhead, staffing, stock and traffic. Yet, as the old saying goes, "The devil is in the details".
I don't even know if the majority of spa and salon owners realize how the receptionist is truly treating walk-ins, appointment inquiries or phone calls from new clients with questions about services. I feel that most of us felt good about the person we hired for reception, trained them, and then moved on to running the show. But how often are spa and salon owners stopping to closely review how the receptionist is doing on an ongoing basis? We can never forget that the receptionist is the lifeblood of the business, and checking in often is critical.
I bring this topic up because there are several swanky beauty / spa businesses I frequent here on Long Island that I love... but I CRINGE to call or personally interact with their apathetic, incredibly irritable receptionists. It is so bad, it deters my desire for future appointments. When a receptionist is visibly or audibly irritated by an inquiry or request from a paying or potential client, it sends out the worst impression about the business and the talent under that roof that can not be easily reversed.
So what to do? I have my friends and family call my business randomly and act like a first time customer... running through the tedious first time client questions like pricing, stylist info., and scheduling to make sure the reception team answers happily, (like it's the first time they ever answered those questions). I encourage my team to SMILE when they are on the phone with all clients, and in person. The client automatically feels better about her conversation, better about your business and better about making more appointments.

From Soup Nazi to Miss Manners....Polished Politeness Will Set Your Business Apart
Let's face it: As humans, we are not perfect. In our imperfectness, we may come across people who just grate us the wrong way. But what happens when these less than perfect people are our clients? Will icy coolness or outright rudeness keep them coming back? Probably not. Why, then, do so many people in our society find it perfectly okay to walk the etiquette line, even crossing over in to the outwardly rude?
It seems we have entered a modern rudeness crisis in our pursuit of honesty. Too many businesses believe that the quality of their product will overcome the lack of politeness, kindness, and overall good manners portrayed by their policies and employees. For example:

But there is hope! The good news is that since rudeness is becoming so commonplace, it is actually becoming EASIER to surprise clients with manners, politeness, and etiquette - even if the guest they are serving are not responding in kind.
Thorough training for all of your staff members is key. Unfortunately, good manners and etiquette is not always ingrained from a young age, so these key points must be a focus of your training methods. One of the most difficult aspects of working in a service industry is the ability to finesse even the most difficult of customers with respect, authority, and a genuine smile. Coach your staff (and be sure to set the example!) to be able to genuinely master this art of finesse.
Believe me, customers notice the little things...simple phrases such as "Please," "Thank you," "Pardon me," and "It would be my pleasure to assist you," will go a long way with your customers. Every spa is in business to provide their customers with the opportunity to be pampered, to feel "special." Every aspect of their experience with you should radiate your desire to take care of your customers, and manners, politeness, and great service is at the heart of that feeling for each and every customer.
Your space and your staff should also "Look the part." You only have one chance at a first impression, so outfitting your staff in professional and stylish Spa Uniforms is a great idea as well. Lots of Broken Nails? Educate Your Clients on Nail Care
Do your regular clients come in for their manicures complaining of their nails breaking in between services? (I am definitely guilty of this!) Well, nail care goes way beyond the salon and it is important for you to inform them on how to properly take care of their nails outside of their regular manicure services. By educating them and offering products/items they can use at home, you will find yourself with a lot more happier clients that keep coming back!

Some tips for preventing nail breakage:
- We all know biting our nails is just a bad habit, but it is also very detrimental to your nails! It leaves the nails thin and weak and they are more likely to get caught on other surfaces and break due to the jagged and uneven edges. When informing your clients of this, offer to apply nail art, which will discourage them for wanting to bite off the fun designs! =)
- Make sure to keep your retail area stocked full of buffers and fine-grain grit files for your clients to use at home. In between services, your clients nails are going to grow and nails grow unevenly and can cause weakness in some spots. Remember to let them know to file in ONE direction. (filing in both directions will tear the nails)
- Keeping the nails painted at all times, whether it regular polish, gel polish, or hard gel will keep the nails thicker, making it more resistant against breakage. Also, inform your clients to not pick at the polish or gel polish, as this will cause the nails to become weak.
- Use nail strengthening treatments as a base coat or top coat!

- Constantly washing hands can dry them out. Let your client know to always apply lotions after they have washed their hands and to try and avoid getting their hands wet when doing dishes or cleaning. Its a great idea to retail the hand lotion you use on your clients during manicures and let them know they can purchase it as well!

Ginger Oil For Pain Relief

I was just reading an article in Massage Magazine on a study done on the effectiveness of ginger oil combined with Swedish massage or traditional Thai massage on chronic lower back pain.The group conducting the study monitored both the short and long term effectiveness of the ginger oil and compared it against the baseline pain level at the start. Both modalities (although Swedish proved to be more effective) led to significant improvement in pain levels and disability.
Ginger oil is also known for increasing circulation making it a great oil for sports massage and client's with poor circulation.

Cleaning and Maintaining Your Spray Tan Equipment to Ensure Client Satisfaction all Through Tanning Season
Tanning season is in full swing, so I wanted to touch on an important subject - cleaning and maintaining your spray tanning equipment! Since your equipment is essential in performing these services, it is vital to the success of your business that you keep your spray tanning equipment in tip-top shape.

- Clean gun daily. If you are spraying clients back to back, you do not need to clean the gun between
each client, but if you have time between appointments, be sure to flush your gun after each spray. Tanning solution can get caught in the gun and cause clogs or "speckly" spray tans! Spraying airbrush cleaner, followed by clean water, through the gun after your last appointment each day will keep your gun from getting buildup stuck inside. - It is recommended that you empty all solution left in your solution jars at the end of the day. Never let them sit overnight!
- Wipe down the outside of the gun, paying special attention to the cup threads on the gun and on the cup. If solution is left on the threads, your cup may not attach properly, and could come loose during a treatment.
- Wipe down exposed parts, including the turbine/base, hoses, cords, etc. It is important that the motor is able to breathe freely, so avoid allowing overspray or dirt to build up on any part of your unit. The easiest way to keep this from happening is to wipe it down daily.
- Be sure to clean any trapped hair, dust, etc from the intake vents to prevent overheating and/or fire hazards.

Weekly Maintenance
- Clean filters. Locate the filter on your unit, remove, and wash with warm, soapy water. Allow to completely air dry before replacing.
- Thoroughly clean all parts of your gun, including the needle and spray nozzle. Follow the cleaning instructions provided by the manufacturer.
- Periodically thoroughly rinse all solution jars under warm water in the sink.
Spray tanning is becoming more and more popular, and this is a great service to add to your treatment menu to increase client satisfaction, loyalty, and your bottom line.
