Perfect for the Winter - Snowflake Nail Designs!

This is the perfect time to create fun holiday and winter nail designs and snowflake nail designs are very popular for this time of year! The design is simple, not over the top, and easy to create!

Items you will need:

• Striper brush
• Dotting tool
• Base coat
• Top coat
• Blue polish
• White polish
• Glitter/Rhinestones

Steps to create Snowflake Nail Art:

1. Apply base coat and paint the nails blue (or any color that is desired!)
2. Using a striper brush and white paint, add a vertical line and 2 more lines to make an "x"
3. Add 2 small lines at the end of each larger line with the striper brush
4. Using white paint and the dotting tool, add a dot at the end of each line
5. Add a larger dot in the middle of each line.
6. Add a piece of silver glitter or rhinestone to the center of the snowflake.
7. Finally, apply top coat.

Small Business Saturday---Don't Miss Out On Getting Yourself Recognized!

Every radio and television station is filled with adds for Black Friday and Cyber Monday which are almost upon us. Still rather new, in it's fourth year, is Small Business Saturday. Many folks think of their local mom and pop retail stores but it is also an excellent opportunity to draw in new client, new awareness in your area and to create some excitement in your business in general.

I've spoken to a few people in the industry who are starting to think of ways to capitalize on this new shopping holiday. If you've never thought about how you can benefit from Small Business Saturday, or are looking for a jumping off point...here are some ideas.

Many local newspapers offer free advertising, which is always an easy way to get the word out. A simple ad showcasing your business and even offering a new client discount is a free way of getting someone in the door.

Window banners and/or signs out front are a great way to catch street traffic. I would have a banner in the window near the holidays that said Massage $49.95 in GIANT letters. This was enough to get people in the door out of curiosity. This enabled me to show the potential client everything we offered aside from the massage special.

In the spa/salon advertise a Small Business Saturday special or event. You can host raffles, giveaways, special packages for existing and new clients. You can make it as big or small of an event as you like.

If you have the resources, grab some air time on a local radio station or local television channel.

Offer your existing clients a special deal where if they bring a friend in on Small Business Saturday they each get a complimentary add on or gift; whatever is best for you.

Set up a special holiday retail section in your business. If you feel like offering a one day sale or promotion even better! Here are some great gift options:

Keep Your Clients Safe! How to Disinfect Your Nail Files Effectively

Salon and spa cleanliness is a hot ticket item these days. It seems like everywhere you go, people are buzzing about implements and tools being used in spas and salons.

As a spa or salon owner, I am sure the safety of your clients weighs heavy on your mind. Client health has to be top priority, but you also have a business to run, and your prices need to remain at market value. Using only disposable tools and implements can get costly, driving your prices up or cutting into your profit margins. What is the best way to handle these concerns?

Below, I have included some recommended instructions below to clean and disinfect cushioned files, , and blocks. As always, make sure you are following your state regulations!

1. Abrasive files, buffers, and blocks should be thoroughly cleaned after each use. Having ample quantities of these items on hand is essential to ensure your clients' safety.
2. Add a few drops of antibacterial liquid soap/detergent to a clean and disinfected brush.
3. Under running water, gently scrub with brush all surfaces to remove all visible debris and residue while thoroughly rinsing.
4. After cleaning, disinfect by immersing in (or saturating with) 70-90% isopropyl alcohol for 5 minutes.
5. Remove items, rinse thoroughly in running water.
6. Allow items to air dry completely (usually 24 hrs) by placing them on top of a clean towel and covering them with another clean towel.

Please note: different disinfectants are recommended for different types of surfaces. Hospital-grade disinfectants are generally recommended for use on hard, non-porous surfaces. 70-99% alcohol is an excellent disinfectant for softer, porous surfaces, such as nail files and buffers.

Honey does wonders for the skin and possesses natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which make it especially great for use in sensitive, combination, and acne prone skin types. However, it is suitable for all skin types. Honey as an ingredient in your skin care treatments will moisturize, cleanse and make the skin soft and silky! It also attracts the dirt from skin pores and dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, so it is said to be a great natural cleanser and softener.

An easy way to include honey into your treatments would be using Honey Powder, which has a longer shelf life then honey in its traditional form and can be mixed as needed whereas traditional honey can crystallize and be sticky and difficult to use. Honey Powder can be used in milk baths, oatmeal/honey facials, and other treatments utilizing honey. It is also known as a natural humectant and has the ability to attract and retain moisture.


So what IS Honey Powder?
Honey Powder is really just dehydrated honey. It is white in color and has a texture similar to corn flour. The process used to create this powder is to use very high heat, although some producers even freeze dry the honey, to spray to a fine dry powder.


A simple tip on using Honey Powder: You can mix 3/4 parts Honey Powder and 1/4 parts water.

Protect Your Investment: Caring for Massage Linens

One of the most important responsibilities you have as a massage therapist is to care for your massage table linens. Linens covering massage tables are unique in their usage, since aside from just covering and protecting your bed, they are splashed and stained with oil on a regular basis. And we all know how much fun it is to remove oil stains!

As a business owner, you want to ensure that you are getting the best wear out of your linens. But how do you effectively remove the stains and prolong the life of your sheets? Follow the below tips to get the most out of your massage linens:

Wash Daily
I know, laundry is not my favorite task either, but in order to effectively remove oil stains from massage table linens, washing daily is crucial. Massage oil often goes rancid quickly, which sets the stain in further, and also makes your linens smell like French Fries after a while...gross! If you are unable to wash daily, store your unwashed linens in black plastic bags (like garbage bags), sealed against air and light to keep any oil residue from going rancid.

Pro Tip: Keep hand towels close by while performing a massage or body treatment to avoid using your linens to wipe off excess oil!

Pre-Soak Stains
As soon as your client leaves your treatment room, inspect your sheets for oil stains (it is easier to check while they are still on the table, rather than once they are bundled up ready to be washed). Treat any stains you find immediately using either your regular linen detergent or a degreaser (such as Dawn dish soap).

Laundry Tips
For badly stained linens, wash twice to remove the oil stains. Wash with warm (not hot) water to avoid setting in stains, and rinse in cold water. If you have stubborn stains, you may want to consider adding bleach or a non-chlorine bleach additive in the second washing to rid the remaining oil from the linens. Our favorite detergent is the Lotus Touch Always Fresh Detergent, which is a professional-strength, biodegradable detergent that has be specifically formulated to break down massage oil stains. This detergent is great for use as a pre-soak for those stubborn stains as well!

Drying Tips
Never dry your sheets in the dryer unless you are sure all oil has been removed! Drying the oil not only sets the stain, making it even more difficult to remove, but it can also be a fire hazard! When drying, throw 2-3 tennis balls in the dryer with your sheets - this will fluff them up and help them dry more evenly. If possible, line dry your sheets to extend their life.
