Preventative Lice Measures

Lymphatic Drainage Massage Made me a LOSER (on the scale)!

While lymphatic massage does not
 produce permanent weight loss
 on its own,  it may aid in removing excess
body weight.

I once met a petite little lady around the age of 40 that attributed her impeccable size 2 figure to lymphatic drainage massages.  She said that for years she was a stubborn size 10 before she began seeing a Hungarian massage therapist in a Scottsdale spa for "European style" lymphatic massages two times a week. She claimed that this technique worked wonders for her body and helped jump start the release of toxins and "stuck" excess fluid from her body. Though I was fascinated by her testimonial, I found it highly unlikely that anyone could lose 4 dress sizes from being massaged! Yet, the story never left my mind after all these years.  So after putting on 6 pounds this summer, and not having any success with my personal training sessions, I decided to try a few Lymphatic Drainage massage appointments.  After all, this did seem to be easier than squats.

I booked an appointment with a nearby spa where only two of the masseuses are trained in this teqnique.  I was already feeling excited when I learned these two therapists are booked for weeks performing Lymphatic Drainage Massages - this could only mean they work right? My therapist was from China and talked to me a lot about Chinese medicine and theory behind the benefits of this technique.  Though she did not assure me I was going to be a size 2, she felt confident that I would see positive benefits from a 90 minute treatment.

About 24 hours after my massage I felt the best. My energy has been dramatically improved, my sleep was deeper and I lost ONE POUND!  Now I am not sure if that was just water weight, but I really don't care. My scale didn't manage to go down once in 3 months, so I feel this is a great success.  I am commited to going back once per week, for 90 minutes to see what happens.  I am also keeping my cardio workouts and a decent diet plan.

Just Sisal While You Work!

No, I did not spell "whistle" wrong, I am writing about  Sisal!

What is  Sisal?  According to Wikipedia:

"Sisal (Agave sisalana) is an agave that yields a stiff fibre traditionally used in making twine, rope and also dartboards. The term may refer either to the plant or the fibre, depending on context. It is sometimes incorrectly referred to as sisal hemp because hemp was for centuries a major source for fibre, so other fibres were sometimes named after it."

You might be asking yourself, OK Doug, what do Agave plant ropes have to do with spas/salons?  Well, it turns out that Sisal fibers are ALSO used to make a variety of exfoliation products... sponges, soap sacks, mitts, gloves, pads, brushes and more!

Sisal is used for deep exfoliation and massage of the skin, and it is frequently used dry. This type of rough exfoliation may take some getting used to, but it is a good way to slough off dead skin and reveal fresher, softer skin underneath.   Sisal is also very commonly used wet, in the shower (in a standard shower or during a Vichy Shower treatment), for slightly more gentle exfoliation.

Whether the Sisal is used wet or dry, it is best to begin with a gentle scrubbing until the skin becomes more used to the exfoliation of the sisal bristles, and then more pressure can be applied for a deeper exfoliating massage. Sisal can be used on the back as well as other rough places, such as the knees or feet, or even all over the body for a full-body exfoliating treatment. Sisal should not be used on more sensitive areas like the face.

Because the Sisal may also be able to improve circulation, some recommend always brushing in a circular motion, toward the heart. One may use a sisal brush every day, once a week, or as needed... any use can provide skin benefits!

Update Your Look for Fall and Give Your Colorist a Visit!

Hair color is one of the greatest trends that women can enjoy playing around with. Fall is a great time of year to make a change to your color. I myself love making changes to my hair color, I'm a natural blonde, have gone brunette, and am playing around with the idea of...maybe...something a little more red! Changing your hair color with the seasons is definately a lot of fun.

• Brunettes:
• If you are looking to update your dark tresses, consider going warmer and darker. Darker colors can highlight the skin and eyes, so it is a great way to change your look with the changing seasons. Another look that continues to stay popular is a sleek, black color. 

• Redheads:


• Red is definately a huge trend this fall. Warm tones such as copper and auburn will balance out paler skin. For a lighter, less extreme look, try going with a strawberry blonde color.

• Blondes:
• A great way to update blonde hair for the fall is adding more of a beige tone. Also, adding some low lights will tone down the summer blonde color and give you a great multidimensional look. 

Whichever color change you choose, try to keep it within two shades lighter or darker than your natural color. Be sure to consult with your colorist what would work best for your skin tone and leave them to work their magic! Happy coloring!!

Stay Calm with Chamomile in Your Spa

As the time comes to transition from summer into fall, for some it can definately be a stressful time. Back to school, back to work, no more relaxing beach days, etc...things can get hectic! Its a time for some much-needed calming!

Chamomile calms the mind and eases fear, anxiety, anger, worries and tension during times of physical and emotional stress. Also, brings peace and patience and enhances overall feelings of calm and relaxation.

Chamomile is one of the longest used medicinal plants. It’s been used for centuries to calm and soothe the mind, body, and soul. Diffusing roman chamomile essential oil can combat depression, insomnia, and stress because of its calming abilities. When used in aromatherapy, it is able to relax and tone the nervous system and decrease tension and anxiety.

Both Roman and German chamomile have excellent calming properties, but Roman chamomile is more effective for irritation, impatience, and has great value in treating PMS and other menstrual and menopausal problems, while German chamomile is superbly effective on the skin, not only to soothe and calm, but to heal and for tissue regeneration. Both help soothe skin conditions like acne, eczema, rashes, wounds, dermatitis, and dry, itchy skin. Chamomile oil is excellent at treating any type of inflammation, but German chamomile contains azulene, a powerful anti-inflammatory agent.  This blue crystal is not actually present in the plant, but forms in the oil and only a small quantity is needed to be effective. Roman Chamomile essential oil is very mild when used on the skin. Due to this, it is a great choice for use on sensitive or inflamed skin. The Roman chamomile essential oil has a sweet, apple-like fragrance and is very light clear blue in color, while the German chamomile oil has a sweet, straw-like fragrance, and is dark blue in color. Roman chamomile can be used in a blended massage oil, or diluted in the bath, to assist with allergies, anorexia, addiction, colic, insomnia, back pain, muscle pain, arthritis, post-natal depression and bowel disorders, whereas German chamomile can be used for asthma, measles, mumps, PMS, menopausal symptoms, as well as rheumatism.

*Both chamomiles blend well with bergamot, clary sage, lavender, geranium, jasmine, tea tree, grapefruit, rose, lemon and ylang-ylang.

Cream of the Crop: The Best Top Coats!

A vast majority of Nail Technicians will always say that their absolute favorite Top Coat, hands down, is the Seche Vite Crystal Clear Top Coat.  We here at Pure Spa love the feedback that our clients provide and I personally have sworn by Seche Vite for years as well.  A recent experience, however, made me reconsider my unyielding devotion and maybe, just maybe, allow 2 top coats to be favorites.

Last week I tried a lovely new nail salon.  The staff was warm and gracious and they were exceptionally patient while it took me forever and a day to choose my polish colors.  I like to bring my own top and base coats and while the technician was more than happy to oblige with my Poshe Base Coat, she said that she would much rather use her 'Out the Door' Top Coat.  Seeing as I had never used that particular product before, I decided to go for it.

The final verdict?  I absolutely LOVE Out the Door Top Coat!  While this does not mean I am saying goodbye to Seche Vite, it does mean that there is a new, fantastic option depending upon your clients needs.

Out the Door Top Coat Experience:

• Applied evenly, did not have to be globbed on.
• Medium amount of Shine.
• 3-5 minute drying time.  The manufacturer says the product dries in 45 seconds, however, it took several minutes for my nails to no longer be tacky.  
• Most importantly, this product LASTS.  Despite going to a Water Park and doing a significant amount of house cleaning, I did not experience any kind of chipping until the 6th day of my manicure!  Who knows how long it could have lasted if I took it easy on my nails?

Seche Vite Top Coat Experience:

• Needs to be applied thickly, as product itself is thick.  The more, the better!
• Very high Shine - Nails look wet.
• 1-2 minute dry time MAX. My nails are A-OK to dig into my purse for keys approximately 2 minutes after Seche Vite top coat application.
• Typically, I start to experience peeling on the 3rd day.  Water and cleaning supplies have caused it to lift automatically.

Deciding which top coat to use all depends upon the needs of your client.  When you have clients that love the wet look and/or cannot sit at the nail dryer for an extended period of time, Seche Vite Top Coat is the way to go.  Clients who have some time to spare and are looking for a longer-lasting manicure can be offered Out the Door Top Coat.  Providing you client with options will help garner loyalty and help increase profits!
