NEW From CND Shellac: CND Shellac Nourishing Remover

The newest addition to the CND Shellac line is the CND Shellac Nourishing Remover, available now at Pure Spa Direct in 8 oz and 32 oz bottles.

According to CND: "Building off CND Shellac’s convenient and gentle ten minute removal process, CND Shellac Nourishing Remover, out in September 2012, will reduce removal time to eight minutes. CND Shellac Nourishing Remover is infused with macadamia and Vitamin E oils to condition nails and softly remove color."

Gentler than acetone on the nails and skin, with added Macademia Oil and Vitamin E, CND Nourishing Remover sounds, well, nourishing! And shortening removal time from 10 minutes to 8 minutes is a great plus, too! I know 2 minutes does not sound like a lot of time, but if you do 10 removal services a day, you will save 20 minutes! How quickly the time adds up!

Will you stick with your current removal process, or check out the nourishing properties of CND Nourishing Remover?

Rice For Hair And Skin Beauty!

Rice Bran Oil is becoming more and more popular in the skin and hair care industry.  Use of Rice Bran Oil originated in Japan and today the highest compliment a Japanese woman can receive is "nika bijin" which means "a rice bran beauty".  Japanese woman have used it for centuries to help smooth out wrinkles as well as provide a slight amount of sunscreen protection.  So why not start taking some of their secrets and use it on your clients?

Oil extracted from the germ and inner husk of rice, Rice Bran Oil is considered to be hypoallergenic.  It protects collagen and elastin which plays a large part in maintaining the suppleness of your skin.  Just like our skin, our hair can be damaged by ultraviolet rays.  The sun's rays can oxidize hair and cause dryness and color damage. The oryzanol in rice bran oil blocks ultraviolet rays and protects it from free radicals.  Another major part of rice bran oil is the high amount of Vitamen E.   It can help seal dry ends and prevent hair loss from breakage.

This oil is perfect for any service you offer at your spa or salon.  It is a great oil to use for massages, post facials or hair treatments.  Because of its small molecule structure it is faster and easier penetration without the oil being greasy.  Here at Pure Spa Direct we have both Rice Bran Oil and Rice Bran Powder for you to use as a massage lotion, direct facial or hair treatments or to include in your own homemade creams, lotions or other beauty concoctions.  The cosmetic companies are starting to include this oil in their products, so why not include it in your services?

Injecting Profits into Spas - Call the Doctor to Give Clients a Lift

Injectables offer spa clients more dramatic
and youthful results.
There comes a time in any client's skincare regime when they have exhausted the routine of facials, microderm packages, masks and creams in their quest to stay youthful - they want more. Many small spa businesses and estheticians find themselves trying to decide what to add to their menu as a next level of treatment to address more aggressive signs of aging for these types of clients.  Some will opt for purchasing or leasing IPL machines, lasers, or various types of equipment in hopes of helping clients reach that next level of rejuvenation.  But with these types of units costing $10,000 - $40,000 (and results varying client to client), the investment can sometimes go bust.  Not to mention, if your competitor down the street gets the same unit, sales for these services can quickly go flat.

"Injectable Fillers for age conscious clients compliment
skin care services spas already offer."  -Dr. Joel Lamm
(Photo: 2 days post cheek injections, Botox & Juvaderm XC)
Recently, I took my mom to see my dermatologist, Dr. Joel Lamm, for his signature "Liquid Face Lift". My 64 year-old working mom sees Dr. Lamm to "work his magic," lifting, plumping, sculpting and filling her badly aged face with Botox and Juvederm XC.  Not only is this "Liquid Face Lift" a serious confidence booster, she feels it is important not to look her age in this tumultuous job market (but that is a whole other blog).  She, like many other spa clients, had exhausted her efforts of anti-aging facials, peels and microderm treatments and was ready for a serious boost of beauty.

While there with my mom, Dr. Lamm told me in addition to his dermatology practice on Long Island, he has begun seeing clients at a popular day spa in Tribeca.  He visits once a month to see the spa's existing and new clients who want Botox, Juvederm, Restylane or "the works" - aka the Liquid Lift my mom gets.  He explained this mutually beneficial arrangement with the spa allows him to expand his clientele, while the spa gets to offer top-notch injectable services that clients want.

This arrangement makes sense.  When a client is ready for a dramatic and long-lasting boost of beauty - why should they leave the spa and go seek out a dermatologist, why lose that business?  This type of working relationship benefits all parties.

  • Spa retains clients and keeps offerings current
  • Spa attracts new clients interested in fillers - but wary of Physician's offices
  • Dermatologist and Spa share revenue from service
  • Dermatologist sees clients once a month - doesn't pay rent for a second location
  • Clients get to have treatment in a comfortable environment they trust and know
  • Clients get to look drastically better, and still visit the spa for facials and treatments in between injections.
  • One-stop beauty for spa and esthetic clients

So how should you find a reputable dermatologist that will be a good fit for your business?  Check with Allergan, http://www.botoxcosmetic.com/FAD.aspx.  They have a website that allows you to locate a certified Physician who  performs injectables.  Contact them and start a dialog!  My advice, stick with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.  Sorry, but I would not take my mom to see a podiatrist that is certified to inject Botox! Dr. Lamm is located in Hicksville, NY - http://www.lammdermatology.com/ and specializes in creating natural looking (but astounding) effects with injectables.

Disposable Face Rest Covers: Happy Clients, Greater Profit!

Great massage, but itchy face!
Based upon my most recent massages, there seems to be a growing trend of using terry cloth towels as face rest covers.  The desired effect is to make the face rest feel more plush and comfy, however, it is actually very uncomfortable.  In addition, the cost to wash the towels does not help your bottom line.

Whether you use towels on your face rests, or another washable fabric, I recommend switching to Disposable Face Rest Covers.  The covers are available as either bouffant cap style, or a fitted cover, which is significantly more popular.  Most are made of a latex-free, super-soft fabric that is both gentle on your clients' skin and protective of your furniture.  Here are just a few of the benefits of disposable face rest covers:
Ahhhh - much better!
  1. Reduces lines and wrinkles on your client's face.
  2. Hygienic and sanitary.
  3. Protects face pad.
  4. Prevents oils and cosmetics from staining your linens.
  5. Protects your clients' faces from germs and bacteria.
Another benefit?  You are not just stuck with white covers, as you can purchase black ones too!

Facial Client Retail: Dermalogica & June Jacobs Powder Exfoliant Reviews

Estheticians often tell me that if they had to send their clients home with only ONE retail product to maintain beautiful, glowing skin, it would be an exfoliator.  Something gentle, but powerfully effective in sweeping away dead skin cells, brightening dull complexions and keeping skin clear of breakouts, thus keeping clients' skin looking great in between facial appointments. This is important for both the client and the esthetican because great product recommendations build trust and repeat business.

SO what to retail?

Years ago, my esthetican sold me Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant after a facial: A dry, powder exfoliating polish that activates with water. I LOVED it devotedly for a few years. I have subsequently tried BareMinerals / Bare Escentuals - Exfoliating Treatment Cleanser and found it to be blah.  So when June Jacobs recently launched her Radiant Refining Exfoliating Powder,  I was eager to try and compare.

Rice, Bamboo, Salicylic Acid & Papain
Leave Skin GLOWING!
#1 Retail to Clients!
The results of June Jacob's Radiant Refining Exfoliating Powder.... IT IS MY NEW OBSESSION!  My skin is not glowing - it is BEAMING.  All the little hormonal pimples I had bulging at the surface of my skin have retreated. My skin looks smooth, healthy, flawless and RADIANT, and it looks YOUNG!  Which, after just turning 40 last month, is very important!!

Also, Radiant Refining Powder is Paraben Free! Dermalogica's Microfoliant is not. (My bottle of Microfoliant  has "Methylparaben" listed)

I am also in love with the amount of anti-oxidants in June's formula.  Microfoliant has some, but JJ's Radiant Refining Powder has MORE - like:
  • Bearberry Leaf Extract
  • Mulberry Fruit Extract
  • Lemon Fruit Extract
  • Willow Bark Extract
  • Goji Berry Fruit Extract
  • Pomegranate Fruit Ferment Extract
  • Grape Seed Extract
  • Red Tea Leaf Extract
June Jacob's is a world renowned name and brand in the five-star spa industry.  Her products are highly regarded for their natural properties and effective performance.

Estheticians and Day Spas - if you are looking for an exciting, effective, paraben free, dye free, fragrance free and sulfate free line of products to retail to your clients and to use during facials - check out June Jacobs wholesale at Pure Spa - call 800-434-0018 for your pricing!

Salt of the Earth: A Comparison of Bulk Salts Offered By Pure Spa Direct

At Pure Spa Direct, we offer all types of bulk salts, whether they are from the Mediterranean Sea, the French Coast, the Dead Sea or the Himalayan Mountains.  But its all just Sodium Chloride, right? The answer is a resounding NO - There are major differences that will have a definitive impact on your clients and the services your offer.

This particular type of salt is solar evaporated on the shores of the Mediterranean, meaning that sea water is left out in the sun to evaporate under natural conditions.  Once the water has evaporated, pure sea salt crystals are revealed.  This is probably one of the more popular salts since it is cost-effective, available in a multitude of grain sizes and it also dissolves quickly.  Containing such minerals as Iodine, Fluorine, Magnesium and Potassium, this salt can be used as a soak and a scrub.

This Sea Salt is farmed from the Brittany Marshes off the coast of France using methods that have been in place for over 1000 years.  Unrefined and full of trace minerals, this salt is actually lower in sodium and contains Calcium, Potassium, Copper, Zinc and Iron.  While it can be used as a scrub, this salt is best used as a soak.  Also, due to its excessively dry nature, it is able to absorb essential oils better than other salts.  This is one of the best salts to use for aromatherapy.

Unlike the previous 2 types of salt, this particular sodium chloride is obtained not from the ocean, but rather the famed Dead Sea, a 3 million year old salt water lake.  Another key difference is the fact that Dead Sea Salt only contains 10% sodium, and the remaining 90% is comprised essential minerals including Zinc, Iodine, Potassium, Calcium and Bromides.  The effectiveness of the Dead Sea is not only due to the salt content, but also the atmosphere of the region.  You can bring to Dead Sea to your spa, however, by creating custom soaks with the salt.  Since it is so rich in minerals that the human body constantly needs to replenish, soaking treatments will provide the greatest benefits, but this salt can also be used as a scrub.  Soaking in Dead Sea Salt has been shown to help treat such issues as cellulite, water retention, itching, acne, dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, scabies, dandruff and hair loss.

Mined from deep within the largest mountain range in the world, Himalayan Salts look more like coarse gemstones than chunks of salt.  These completely pure salts were formed millions of years ago and have never been exposed  to any types of pollutants or toxins.  In addition to sodium, this salt also contains 84 trace minerals, including all 74 elements found in the human body.  Himalayan Salt is best used for hydrotherapy treatments as submersion is the most efficient way to absorb the product.  This salt has been shown to heal wounds and muscle injuries, repair skin texture and tone, combat cellulite and water retention, and even plump up the skin to fill out fine lines and wrinkles.

Click HERE and HERE to see just a few of the salt products we carry!

***Bonus Tip*** Apothecary Jars are an easy, effective and charming storage unit for your salt soaks and scrubs.

New Stainless Steel Carts and Trolleys at Pure Spa Direct NOW!

In the market for a new Esthetician Trolley? Look no further than Pure Spa Direct! We have a HUGE variety of carts and trolleys to suit almost every need! My personal favorite are the Stainless Steel Trolleys. There are so many advantages to Stainless Steel Construction, including:
Stainless Steel is hygienic, strong, and durable!
  • Rust Resistance - Stainless steel is resistant to rust. If rust does form on stainless steel, it is because small particles of iron-containing metal have become embedded in the steel. This can occur, for instance, if you use steel wool to clean stainless steel.
  • Heat Resistance - stainless steel has a much higher heat tolerance than wood or plastic
  • Hygienic - Does not harbor germs - Because stainless steel is non-porous, it resists bacteria and germs more effectively than wood or plastic surfaces. Stainless steel can be wiped clean with a disinfectant cleaner after use, and is an attractive option for anyone who wants to keep their equipment as clean and immaculate as possible.
  • Aesthetic Appearance - Stainless steel, as it is a neutral color, is easy to match with just about any modern décor.
  • Strength-to-Weight Advantage - Stainless steel is relatively light-weight, this allowing for easier lifting... for instance when rolling from one area to another won't suffice.
  • Durability - Stainless steel can withstand very hot and very cold temperatures. Unlike plastic, wood or glass, stainless steel does not break easily, even if dropped. Stainless steel may dent, but it will not shatter or chip the way other materials will.
  • Long Life Span - Stainless steel does not fade or become discolored over time. It's also a rust-proof and stain-resistant material, so it will maintain its shine and preserve all of the aesthetic qualities for years to come.
If stainless steel will not work for you, Pure Spa Direct offers many wood, glass, or plastic options as well!

Pure Spa Direct is a Professionals-Only, Wholesale website for the Beauty Industry. We offer North America's LARGEST selection of spa and salon supplies - over 65,000 products! The New Season Calls For Changes in Hair Care.

With the seasons changing, so will your clients' hair. Which means, it's time to start changing up the hair routine. After the summer months and exposure to the UV rays, chlorine, highlights, and ponytails your clients' hair is going to need a makeover. With summer and humidity causing hair to frizz, fall's colder weather will cause dry strands. So what needs to be done is take care of the summer damage AND prepare for the colder months (no bad hair days!). The first step to this new routine is simply washing hair and ridding it of all the build-up consumed over the summer. The best way to do this is by using a clarifying shampoo and conditioner or a clarifying treatment. You'll also want to add a deep conditioning treatment about once every 2 weeks. Getting a cut will also help keep hair looking great and feeling healthy. Your clients will be surprised at how much of a difference a hair cut can make! When changing up the routine for the fall, also keep in mind your clients who seasonally change their hair color, you are going to want to offer services to them that will keep their hair hydrated. Great looking hair can always be achieved as long as the right care and maintenance is being done!

Check out some products that are great for changing to a fall routine:

June Jacobs Dry Oil - Transforms Skin from Dehydrated to Divine

In the world of horticulture, the Orchid plant is considered to one of the most magnificent flowers on earth.  Specifically, the Vanda Orchid is famous for its delicate fragrance and its ability to store water for up to 3 weeks.

June Jacobs, the creator of the elite June Jacobs Spa Collection has produced a luxurious product that combines both the scent and the hydrating properties of the Vanda Orchid, along with the emollient and anti-aging qualities of many other ingredients in the Vanda Orchid Dry Oil Body Spray.

Unlike standard oils that need to be thoroughly rubbed in, dry oil is lightweight, deeply hydrating and it absorbs easily.  Some of the oils that are in this body spray include:
  1. Squalene - This oil, which is derived from Spanish olives, imitates the skin's natural oil, sebum, and is therefore absorbed easily.
  2. Peach Kernel Oil - Taken directly from the peach seed, this oil is filled with fatty acids that moisturize and hydrate the skin.

New Hair Color For The Fall!

Summer is almost over and the autumn months are coming.  Kids are going back to school and young adults are going away to college.  This is the time of the year where many of them want to show off their personal style by getting a new hair do or changing the color of their hair.  Some of them will want the traditional hair colors like red, burnette, blonde or black, while others will want to go crazy with color.  So why not have that available to them.  Jerome Russell's Punky Colors is your solution.  Let them go crazy with colors like:

Depending on the type and condition of hair the colors can last up to 40 washes.  My cousin was visiting for a couple weeks from California and she said before she went back to high school she was going to get her hair done.  She wanted pink streaks in her hair because it is something different.  This semi-permanent hair color would be perfect for her.  Nowadays, people want to stand out - so why not offer products that will stand out to your clients?  Jerome Russell Punky Colors is something fun and great to offer those clients who really want to show off their personality through their hair.

Fall-Inspired Spa Products For Your Clients

Fall is just around the corner, so you'll want to start thinking of some fall inspired items to offer your clients. Especially products that will help combat dry skin, which is caused from season changes. When I think of fall, the first thing I think of is the colors. Red, orange, yellow, etc...you get it. Which also happens to be the colors of pumpkins, cranberries, and pomegranates! These are some ingredients and scents you should think of when thinking of new items to offer your clients. Your clients are probably always looking for some kind of at home items they can use when they are not at the spa. I came across a couple items by June Jacobs Collection, that made me instantly think of the fall. The Perfect Pumpkin Peeling Enzyme Masque™ and Cranberry Pomegranate Moisture Masque™ are some great products to offer your clients this fall. Cranberry and pomegranate help to protect the skin because they are potent antioxidants which help to retain moisture. Also, cranberries help to stop the depletion of collagen and pomegranate extract help to tighten pores. The Perfect Pumpkin Peeling Enzyme Masque™ is detoxifying and contains pumpkin enzymes that aid in cell turnover, making skin look refreshed. This masque also contains Vitamins A and C plus zinc. June Jacobs products are paraben and preservative free and also contain an anti-oxidant blend of white, red and green tea extracts and goji berry, pomegranate and grapeseed extracts all work to improve skin tone, and essentially, fight the aging process. Sounds like all kinds of good stuff to me! Happy Fall! =)

Spice Up Your Spa For Fall with These Bargain Ideas!

I love fall! Fall is exciting. It's apples and cider. It's an airborne spider. It's pumpkins in bins. It's burrs on dog's chins. It's wind blowing leaves. It's chilly red knees. It's nuts on the ground. It's a crisp dry sound. It's green leaves turning And the smell of them burning. It's clouds in the sky. It's fall. That's why... I love fall. --Author Unknown

As much as I hate to admit it, it is time to begin preparing for Autumn. Don't get me wrong, I love Autumn, it is by far my favorite season...the smells, the chill in the air, the boots and sweaters and pumpkins and apples and cranberries and leaves...but I am not ready to let go of summer quite yet.

For a business, though, you always must be thinking ahead. So while I am still looking forward to hot days on the beach, warm evenings at the park, swimming, and lots of other fun outdoor activities with my kids, I will let go of summer, just a little, to chat with you about what is in store for the next season!

Autumn has such a different feel from all of the other seasons, and it is so easy infuse your spa with Autumn. Spruce up your space, add Autumn-themed add-ons to your services, even add new services for the change of the seasons!

I have included some ideas below for adding that "Autumn Feel" to your spa...on a budget! By simply changing up the essential oils you use, you can easily adjust your menu and offerings to embrace this exciting season! Adding one or two Autumn-themed specials may drive extra business, without a large buy-in to get started. And finally, some simple touches to lose the carefree feeling of summer, and fully embrace the Comforts of Autumn.

Autumn Aromas
One of the more remarkable changes that come along with the passing of seasons each year is variation in scents depending on the time of year. One whiff of peppermint or pine, and I am immediately whisked to Christmas time; cinnamon, apple, and nutmeg brings me to changing leaves, boots, and sweaters of Autumn! Use these essential oils (and more!) to scent your spa or your services! Trade in the light, sweet, fruity scents of summer for these alluring autumn aromas:
  • Frankincense - this warm, woody aroma acts as an antidepressant, relaxes, and revitalizes, allowing the spirit to soar! This essential oil is non-irritating, so it is a great oil to mix with your massage oil for an extra-special Autumn Massage.
  • Juniper Berry - Juniper Berry is often used in the winter, but its pleasantly sweet, slightly fruity, invigorating evergreen scent is so delicious, it is even better if you start using it early! An anti-inflammatory, antiseptic essential oil, Juniper Berry is a great addition when the seasons turn and your clients and staff start getting the sniffles! Plus, Juniper Berries are used to make gin, to the scent has a masculinity to it that lends itself well to a variety of aroma blends.
  • Sandalwood - the longest lasting of all essential oils, Sandalwood has a sweet, woody scent, and acts as an antidepressant, antiseptic and aphrodisiac, making this perfect for lifting the spirits of your clients and staff when they are feeling the "summer is over" blues.
  • Cinnamon - While Cinnamon is used the least of the spice oils in aromatherapy, it can encourage some very positive results, including warming (a necessity as our bodies get used to the temperature changes of Autumn), invigorating, and promoting courage.
To easily transform your spa into an Autumnal Arcadia, simply choose scents that fit the season (mix your own blends, or check out the blends we have already available HERE), and use diffusers placed around your space to share the scents of the seasons with your guests!

Autumn-Themed Specials
Changing up your regular menu not only excites your clients and brings in new business, but it keeps your staff motivated as well! Ask for their input as to what kinds of Autumn twists you can add to your current service offerings, and watch them come alive again!
  • Autumn Pedicures - While your clients may not be prancing around in strappy sandals any longer, I guarantee you they wish they were, and having their pedicure will give them a little glimpse of summer gone. We offer an Autumn Pedicure Package featuring Cranberry, but even if you do not want a whole pacakge, add Cranberry Paraffin to the beginning of your pedicures or use a Pumpkin Scrub during the service. Little touches go a long way!
  • Incorporate Ginger Root to your facials, during steaming, to invigorate, warm, and comfort your clients!
  • Pumpkin Facials - Pumpkin is amazing for the skin and produces beautiful results. Feature a special Exfoliating Pumpkin Facial featuring a pumpkin mask....touting it as a "Limited Time Only" special will help fuel the urgency and drive business!
  • Autumn-Themed Massages - Use Pumpkin Massage oil, or blend your own with some of the scents listed above. Either way, surrounding your clients with the smells of the season will be uplifting and bring them back again and again. And while your clients will know they can count on a quality massage, by using themed Massages for various times a year, they will be a little bit excited to see what you have cooked up this time!

Comforts of Autumn
I always feel all warm and cozy during fall. It is a time of reaffirmation and preparation for the stress of the holiday season which is just around the corner. You can help foster your clients' warm and cozy feeling during the fall with some simple touches at your spa.
  • Offer cinnamon-apple or cranberry tea instead of coffee. Cinnamon-apple is a sure sign of Autumn, cranberries are all about harvest, and a warm cup of tea is perfect on a crisp day!
  • Feature Autumn-scented hand soap in your restrooms. Apple, pumpkin, cranberry...its the detail that matters. Your clients will notice that you have fully embraced the season, even down to the restrooms.
  • Change up the retail products you offer. Apple cuticle remover doesn't HAVE to be an Autumn product, but I know I would smile if I saw this item show up on your shelves just in time for apple picking! Rotate the scents of the retail hand and body lotions you offer to feature warmer, more inviting scents for the season. Your retail sales will soar and your wallet will thank you!
  • Offer cookies to each client or have a display out in your reception area - snickerdoodles, shortbread, gingersnaps. I promise, your clients will be sneaking seconds!
For now, though, I am going to go back to enjoying the warmth, sunshine, and carefree fun of the summer!

Papaya Is A Great Exfoliation Fruit!

Papaya is a great product to use on your skin to clean pores and to rid the skin of imperfections.  A Papaya is rich in Vitamins A, C and E and other anti-oxidants that can help in giving skin the moisture and protection it needs to stay healthy.

Papaya is rich in Vitamins A, C, and E,
making it great for your skin!
Papain is an enzyme in Papaya that helps exfoliate your skin in the most gentle and natural way.  Its purpose is to break down surface dead skin cells and make them easier to remove. Papain acts as a exfoliation agent in this case. Since Papain is a natural ingredient, it doesn't dry out your skin as it exfoliates, instead it maintains moisture balance. Since your skin maintains its moisture, it looks younger. Papain is also antibacterial, increases immune response, and allows more oxygen into the cell area around the pores.

Here at Pure Spa Direct, we have a number of Papaya masks, peels, and treatments that you may want to consider incorporating into your services for clients who yearn for gentle exfoliation:

Check them out, as well as our other great products that contain Papaya!
