Cleaning and Maintaining Your Spray Tan Equipment to Ensure Client Satisfaction all Through Tanning Season

Tanning season is in full swing, so I wanted to touch on an important subject - cleaning and maintaining your spray tanning equipment! Since your equipment is essential in performing these services, it is vital to the success of your business that you keep your spray tanning equipment in tip-top shape.

Daily Maintenance
An example of tanning equipment that
has not been properly maintained -
Buildup of tanning solution on your
equipment can lead to equipment failure
  • Clean gun daily. If you are spraying clients back to back, you do not need to clean the gun between
each client, but if you have time between appointments, be sure to flush your gun after each spray. Tanning solution can get caught in the gun and cause clogs or "speckly" spray tans! Spraying  airbrush cleaner, followed by clean water, through the gun after your last appointment each day will keep your gun from getting buildup stuck inside.
  • It is recommended that you empty all solution left in your solution jars at the end of the day. Never let them sit overnight!
  • Wipe down the outside of the gun, paying special attention to the cup threads on the gun and on the cup. If solution is left on the threads, your cup may not attach properly, and could come loose during a treatment.
  • Wipe down exposed parts, including the turbine/base, hoses, cords, etc. It is important that the motor is able to breathe freely, so avoid allowing overspray or dirt to build up on any part of your unit. The easiest way to keep this from happening is to wipe it down daily.
  • Be sure to clean any trapped hair, dust, etc from the intake vents to prevent overheating and/or fire hazards.
Tanning Solution buildup on plugs can be dangerous. A quick wipe-down
each evening can help prevent damage to your equipment.

Weekly Maintenance
  • Clean filters. Locate the filter on your unit, remove, and wash with warm, soapy water. Allow to completely air dry before replacing.
  • Thoroughly clean all parts of your gun, including the needle and spray nozzle. Follow the cleaning instructions provided by the manufacturer.
  • Periodically thoroughly rinse all solution jars under warm water in the sink.
Spray tanning is becoming more and more popular, and this is a great service to add to your treatment menu to increase client satisfaction, loyalty, and your bottom line. If you are not currently offering spray tanning, and would like further information about this very profitable service, contact Pure Spa Direct's Sunless Tanning Team at 800-434-0018!

Enjoy the Silence... Check Out the NEW MaxiMist Q'ube - Spa Quiet Professional HVLP Spray Tan System!

The MaxiMist Q'ube is a Noise Suppressed
HVLP System that is perfect for spas!
HVLP Spray Tanning equipment works great, but it can be a little noisy for the ultra quiet ambiance of days spas.  No need to be chained to an old school airbrush spray tan unit though... even day spas can enjoy the amazing ease of HVLP spray tan units with the new MaxiMist MaxiMist Q'ube - Spa Quiet Professional HVLP Spray Tan System!

The HVLP Turbine (even the thought of the word turbine makes you think of a screaming jet engine) is housed in a noise suppression chamber.  The sleek looking box is handy as it is on easy glide casters and gives you a place to put down your spray gun and shelf space for your spray tan products, like a gallon of tanning mist, SluffWIPES Pre-Tan Prep Wipes, Caribbean Smoothie lotion to use as a barrier cream on elbows, knees and palms, body blotters, solution cups and more.

Noise Suppression, eh? The MaxiMist MaxiMist Q'ube puts out a mere 58 db of sound... which is about the same volume as a normal level conversation at 3 feet between two people.  Is the idea of a noie suppressed HVLP system new? No, but the MaxiMist MaxiMist Q'ube is more affordable than other choices such as the AMAZING Apollo Whisper Mist TC3 (which I love!)... the MaxiMist MaxiMist Q'ube costs about 30% less. If you can afford it, the Apollo does really rock, but if you are on a tighter budget or the economy is kicking your butt, the MaxiMist MaxiMist Q'ube is an amazing choice.

Creating & Maintaining the Perfect Sunless Tan!

Summer is around the corner, and as the temperature is heating up, our clothes are becoming lighter.  We are showing more skin and want to look appealing in our tanks, skirts, and dresses. Sun and sun damage (as scarily shown in the left pic) is old news, and sunless tanning (as beautifully shown in the right pic) is all the new!  Every year at Pure Spa Direct, our Sunless Tanning clients, inquiries, and orders are growing dramatically.

Out with the Old...
...In with the New!
One of the most common inquires we receive is regarding the maintenance of the Sunless Tanning Equipment.  Like every other appliance in our world, wear and tear is normal with every day use.  Aside from using the best Sunless Solutions on the market by Pure Sunless and Extended Vacation, the key factor in "Sunless Tanning Excellence" is also the equipment.  Keeping your equipment up-to-date, and clean is imperative in creating that perfect sunless tan. So how do you best maintain your equipment?

See below for some answers to our most frequently asked questions:

1) How Often Should I Clean My Spray Gun?
  • It is important to clean your Spray Gun DAILY!  Many clients ask if the gun needs to be cleaned after each use, and while it is recommend, we suggest you clean the gun each time it is put to rest. If you do 1-2 tans a day (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) then yes, the gun must be cleaned after each use. The key factor to remember is anytime the gun is put to rest, it should be cleaned to ensure maximum results.
2) How Do I Clean My Spray Gun?  (General Instructions for Cleaning MaxiMist Units - other units may vary)
Steps:
1) Disconnect the Spray Gun from the Air Hose
2) CAREFULLY unscrew the Solution Cup. If there is left-over solution in the cup, either close the cup with a lid, or pour the remaining solution into a proper storage container.  *You may pour the extra solution back into it's original solution container, as long as it is done immediately!*
3) Rinse the solution cup under running warm water until it is clean.
4) Fill the cup to 50ml (1-2 ounces) with warm water. Reconnect the spray gun to the air hose, and turn on the turbo unit. Direct the spray gun to a safe area and spray the clean water through the gun, until the cup is empty.
5) Turn off the turbine unit, disconnect the spray gun and unscrew the cup. Be sure to wipe all exposed areas dry.
*CAUTIONDo not submerge the spray gun under water. Do not rinse the tip and air cap while they're connected to the gun, as water may collect under the air the cap and plate, causing mineral buildup.
6) To clean the Solution Cup, unscrew the cup lid and remove the Air Cap Ring. Rinse the threads under warm running water, and then wipe down, till they are clean and dry.
7) Remove the Air Cap. Rinse it under warm running water, and wipe it down till it's clean and dry.
8) (if necessary) Remove the air distributor plate and rinse it under warm running water as well.
*To Re-install the three pieces, just reverse the removal procedure.

**For Additional Maintenance (Recommended weekly):
1) Remove the  Solution Nozzle  for rinsing. The Solution Nozzle  can be easily removed by placing the tip of an adjustable wrench or spanner on the two flat areas of the nozzle, and twist counter-clockwise to remove it.  *CAUTION:  There is a gasket (seal) around the thread of the solution nozzle, that must be re-installed correctly or leakage will occur!
2) The solution needle can also be removed for additional maintenance. To remove it, turn the solution flow screw counter-clockwise until it comes out of the spray gun.  *CAUTION:  Needles are very fragile! Be careful when removing the 'solution flow screw' as there is a small spring around the needle. Do not lose it. This is important to the operation of the spray gun. Set the spring aside and pull the trigger all the way back until you can grab the needle with your finger tips. Pull the needle out from the back of the spray gun. Once removed, rinse under warm running water, clean and dry it. Re-install by reversing the removal procedure.... Viola! Your spray gun should be perfectly clean and ready for the next use!

2) How Often Should I Clean the Filter? And How Do I Do It?
1) It is IMPORTANT to clean the filter weekly. This is important to allow your turbine motor to breathe freely, as a clogged/dirty filter will only cause the turbine to overheat and burn out prematurely.
2) To clean the filter (only applies to units with a removable filter), locate it, remove it, rinse it under warm water and simply replace it. *Hint- If your filter becomes damaged, just go to your local pet store, as you may replace it with aquarium or pond filter.  It will just need to be cut to the appropriate size.

3) When Should I Replace My Sunless Tanning Equipment?
1) Simple answer... when it stops working correctly.  By the time any of the units we carry stop working, you would have performed so many tanning services, you would know when something wasn't right.
2) Most of our equipment offers a one year warranty and we do sell replacement parts.

If you have any questions on any of our Sunless Tanning Equipment or would like to purchase replacement parts, just contact Pure Spa Direct Customer Service Today!

Custom Airbrush Tan vs Booth Tan

With tanning season in full swing, we are talking about spray tanning here at Pure Spa Direct day in and day out. We specialize in custom airbrush tanning, with a wide offering of equipment to suit every technician's need. The other day, however, I was curious to compare a custom airbrush tan with a spray tan done in a booth, so my coworker and I headed over to our local tanning salon to test out the Mystic Tan HD.

I have to admit, I was a little nervous going in. Being confined in a small space, having tanning solution sprayed at me? How was it going to cover my whole body? How would my face come out? What about my hands and my feet? These are the trickiest parts of the body, so would a standardized machine be able to measure up to my custom standards? These are the zillions of thoughts racing through my head as I waited for Rebeca to get her tan.

Once Rebeca was done, one of the workers went to clean the tanning booth, then the other girl beckoned for me to come to the room. She told me to liberally apply barrier cream to my feet and hands, then get in the booth and wave my hand in front of the sensor to turn the booth on. Sounded easy enough, right? So I get ready...barrier cream all my bendable parts, put my hair cap on, the whole kit and kaboodle, I get in the booth, wave my hand in front of the sensor, and.....nothing. Wave my hand some more. Nothing. There was no sensing going on in that sensor. So NOW I have to get dressed, take off my hair cap, etc. and walk all the way to the front of the salon to get the girl who was helping me. Turns out, she forgot to turn the booth on for me.

So my first adventure over, I am ready to get tan already! I step into the booth (which, by the way, was running in "heat up mode" while I got ready) and wave my hand in front of the sensor. Ahhhh that time it sensed me, hooray! There are easy to read numbers on the floor to tell me where to put my feet, and a very pleasant voice instructs me on where to stand. The actual tanning part only takes about 2 minutes. You stand in 4 different positions (based on what the nice tanning booth lady is telling you) while the sprayer moves up and down, spraying your tanning solution concoction of choice. I felt like I was being choked with a fog of tanning solution, and I had not been offered nose plugs. Rebeca, however, is about 4 inches taller than me, and she did not feel as though the spray in the air was excessive. Maybe I am just too close to the floor.

Once all the tanning solution has been sprayed, the Mystic Tan HD booth blows hot air to dry your tan - a very nice touch in the middle of winter! I was afraid of standing in the warm air too long though, as I did not want to get caught in the booth during the spray down cycle!

I chose the darkest tanning solution, and added the "boost" to it, which is supposed to give you a color guide for instant gratification PLUS add 1/2 shade darkness to your solution. When I came out of the booth, my entire body, except for my face, appeared the same color as before I went it. It did begin to gradually darken during the next few hours, however.

When I inspected my tan the next day, I did notice some inconsistencies in my tan color. Some areas had overly darkened, while other areas did not. My right foot, for example, looked FANTASTIC! I was excited, because I always have a problem with my feet looking naturally tanned. When I checked out my left foot, however, there was a large dark splotch on the side of my foot (it looked like tanning solution pooled there), and there were several light spots where I was hardly tanned. Also, my left arm was not nearly as dark as my right. The tan was definitely not even.

Overall, I was impressed by the Mystic Tan HD booth tan. I was much more comfortable undressing to get in a booth than if a person was spray tanning me, and the Mystic Tan HD was warm and the instructions were clear. However, my experience would have been better if my technician was clear in her instructions, highlighting the importance of staff knowledge. I also found my skin to be excessively dry after my tan. My tan did crackle on my legs 3 days in. I don't think I will switch to a booth tan on a regular basis, but if I am tight on cash and/or time, the Mystic Tan HD is a possible option!

Pros Of Booth Tan

  • Quick Application
  • Easy to understand instructions
  • Less expensive than a custom tan

Cons of Booth Tan

  • No trained technician customizing your tan experience
  • All bodies are not made the same, so even coverage is not guaranteed
  • 2 light coats of tanning solution provides a better tan - tanning booth only does 1 heavier coat
  • A trained technician should be able to choose the best shade for you, while I had to choose my own
  • Overspray/fogging solution in the booth - I found it to be uncomfortable

COLD Spray Tans Hurting Business? Kill the Chill!

"Feels like I'm basking in warm sun"
For most, winter spray tans are almost unbearable. When I resolve to have one, you can hear my BLOOD curdling screams from down the hall! With every pass of the spray gun, my entire body tenses and shivers, and I lose it! The cold air, the cold room and the cold tanning solution are too much for this girl to bear. I asked myself, "WHY, WHY, WHY am I doing this? There has got to be a better way!"

Recently, I set up a heat lamp in the tanning room. This BRILLIANT 5 head lamp gives off SOOTHING, heat that elevates pleasure and alleviates the torture of a cold airbrush tan. The lights are warm, comforting and feel like the sun! An extra boon to using the lamp is that is emits dry heat it, which "bakes in" the tanning solution color. I have noticed a much faster dry down, with very little rub off . There is also a richer tan development color as a result of using this method! The infrared energy allows the active ingredients in the tanning solutions to penetrate deeper, creating exceptional tan development! This is a great way to turn your clients airbrush tanning experience into a top-notch spa ritual in any season! The key is - the lamps heat up enough to make the client comfortable, but NOT perspire. This ensures nothing interferes with the tanning solutions' development. The lamps also offer clients a great way to feel pampered, rather than sticking them in front of a cold fan or even worse, handing them a blow dryer and telling them to dry themselves <--not a very classy option!
