The Essential Essential Oils

I'm obsessed with aromatherapy and essential oils...and scented candles! I love walking into a business and being greeted by a lovely scent. It's one of the first things clients notice when they walk in....what they see, smell and hear are vital.

Are you using any essential oils in your entryway?
How about in services? Are you utilizing essential oils to enhance treatments? It can be a bit overwhelming with all of the different scents out there.

For general use for filling the main reception area or walk areas with fragrance, you can use synthetic or organic - whichever you prefer. I have spoken with many clients who try to keep the main scent in the business a subtle yet noticeable scent; you want clients to notice but not be turned off by an overwhelming scent. Light fragrances like ylang-ylang and blends like Peace & Harmony are excellent choices.

For use in rooms, you want to be sure not to choose scents that conflict with any scent(s) of the treatment. You don't want the phenomenal service to be marred by a displeasing mix of smells! You can always ask clients (I know some businesses that include this on their intake forms) what they like and don't like!

For use in services, you can pick and choose to fit your theme, the services, time of year...you can be pretty creative with this! Things like lavender, cedarneroli and peppermint are all excellent choices.

There is also the option of choosing essential oil blends, or blending your own! The Complete Book Of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy is an excellent resource for all things essential oils.

Be sure to have tester strips available for clients to choose their own and to retail!

Berry Unique - Infuse Your Spa Menu with Berries for Results-Driven Treatments!

Berries. For some reason, berries and summer are inexplicably linked in my brain. So, when I think of delicious, incredible summer spa treatments, I crave berry-filled services!

But why use berries in your treatments? So many reasons! Check it out:

Nourishment
Berries are not only good for us as food, but they are great for our skin also! Berries are becoming more and more common ingredients in skin care products. They are packed full of antioxidants, which help slow the aging process. Products high in antioxidants produce youthful, radiant results!

Antioxidants in berries are also known to have anti-inflammatory effects, which is another excellent effect for skin care. Berries can strengthen the walls of blood vessels, which helps to prevent dilated capillaries in skin. Berries can also help soothe irritated skin due to these anti-inflammatory effects.

Defense Against UV Rays
Another interesting effect of berries as skin care ingredients is their ability to provide direct and additional defense against damaging UV rays. More and more sunscreen formulas are including these powerhouse ingredients to naturally boost SPF levels. The anti-inflammatory effects of berries in sunscreens also help lighten hyperpigmentation from UV exposure. Clients concerned with hyperpigmentation will benefit from sunscreen formulations containing berries.

Acne Treatment
The acids that naturally occur in berries help disintegrate blemish-causing bacteria, making berries a great ingredient for acne-fighting products.

So there you have it, some of the top reasons to infuse your spa menu with berries this summer! See some of our favorite berry-infused products below....and leave out a bowl of berries for your clients to much on, as well!

SPA PANTRY Strawberry Leaves - Strawberry leaves have highly astringent and skin-toning properties. They are excellent for oily, large-pore, "dirty" skin. Dried strawberry leaves can be used as additions to facial astringents or facial scrubs.

SPA PANTRY Bilberry Herbs - Bilberry has an astringent, cooling effect that helps tone the skin. It has antifungal and antibacterial properties along with a natural alpha hydroxy acid. Enhances aspect of any spa treatment, including soaks.

Juniper Berry Essential Oil - Juniperberry is useful after any period of indulgence. Juniper may work as a detoxifier and cleanser that also benefits the skin.

Cranberry Pomegranate Moisture Masque™ - This luxurious masque combines cranberry extract, a rich source of vitamins, minerals and flavonoids, combined with extracts of shea butter and sunflower seed oil to replenish the skin.

Bring Dry, Lifeless Hands Back to Life! - Importance of Skincare for the Hands

One of the most overlooked parts of the body when it comes to skincare is the hands. While we all focus on facial and body skincare, we often neglect the hands. The hands are the one body part that is exposed the most to the sun and harsh climates - almost as much as the face. Skincare of the hands is an important part of the overall health of your skin and you'll want to remember treat them just as you would any other part of the body.

In harsh weather conditions, the skin on the hands can become dry and rough. The winter is starting to slowly disappear and this is a great time to offer hand repair treatments. You can offer them as specials and/or add on services also! It is a good idea to recommend at home night treatments to your clients and offer retail items for that as well. Treatment of the hands should include exfoliation, moisturizing, protection and prevention to maintain healthy skin. Keep in mind that it is super important to exfoliate, as the dead skin cells will prevent any moisture treatments from being more effective.

Exfoliation - Exfoliating is best 2-3 times a week.

Keeping your Hot Stones for Massage Clean and Sanitary Bewtween Uses

It is important to make sure you are keeping your hot stones for massage clean and washing them between each client. Here are some tips on keeping your tools sanitary for use between your hot stone massage clients:

  • Antibacterial dish detergent or soap is recommended, as well as Tea Tree Oil.
  • The stones should then be rinsed in hot water, air-dried on a towel and sprayed with a disinfectant like alcohol.
  • Using a scrub brush with antibacterial soap or tea tree oil to scrub the stones can be helpful as well.
  • The water in the massage-stone heater should be changed after each use as well, and the water reservoir should be washed with antibacterial soap and water, rinsed and sprayed with disinfectant.
  • The mat or towel that is at the bottom of the water reservoir in the heater must be replaced with a clean one.
  • Using a light oil with stone massage is recommended, as cream, lotion, gel or heavy oil like jojoba are too heavy for stone massage and tend to stick to the stones and heater surface making it more difficult to clean properly.
  • Having a second set of stones and a second heater is also recommended for back to back treatments and would be helpful in saving time between clients.

Spa Treatments For Beer Lovers!

A new spin on relaxing with a beer!

A spa in the New England area partnered up with a local brewing company to incorporate their craft beer into the service menu.

It's not as plain as offering a beer to go along with the services, although that's a nice idea as well!

They are using the ingredients used to make the beer in their services. For example, they use barley and hops among other things in their exfoliation scrubs. They offer a unique beer bath or pedicure beer foot bath and even a beer hair rinse. Apparently, beer is known for adding volume and shine to hair as well as being hydrating for the skin!

The spa also offers a full beer and ale menu for their clients as well tasting and other events you wouldn't expect to find at a spa.

Now, we can't provide the beer but we do have some of the ingredients to get you started!

Barley Grass Powder
Hops Flower Whole
SPA PANTRY Honey Powder

If you decide to add some beer services to your menu, let me know how well they are received!

Add Some Spice to Your Fall Menu - Warm Apple Parafffin

Warm paraffin treatments are a great service to offer this time of year. Anything warming will sound very appealing to your clients during the colder months. Therabath Pro Paraffin treatments will relieve aches and pains and will soften and moisturize the skin from the inside out!

The Warm Apple Spice Paraffin is perfect for your fall/winter spa menu. It is a delectable scent of juicy apples, fresh spices and a hint of pear that I am sure your clients will love! It is also infused with therapeutic essential oils of clove and cinnamon.

How it works:
A paraffin wax spa takes advantage of paraffin's heat-retaining capacity in a simple process called heat transfer. Basically, as a liquid, the paraffin is able to retain more heat and when a hand or foot is dipped into it, it turns solid and the heat is delivered straight to the core of the area.

Hand Treatments:

  1. Cleanse hands or use Sanitizing Spray
  2. Apply Intensive Hydrating Cream.
  3. Spread fingers slightly, hold hand flat and slowly immerse hand into paraffin; removing hand immediately.
  4. Wait 5 seconds allowing the parafin "shine" to go away indicating the wax is dry.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to make a warm "glove" . Dip 3 times - for light therapy and skin moisturiizing. Dip 5-15 times - intense therapy. The more layers of paraffin, the longer the more heat and length of therapy.
  6. Cover hand with plastic mitt liner bag and plush mitt
  7. After 5-30 minutes, remove mitt, move hands and fingers to loosen paraffin, removing it in liner bag.
  8. Discard used paraffin.

Foot Treatments:

  1. Cleanse feet with Sanitizing Spray. Rub in.
  2. Apply Intensive Hydrating Cream
  3. Slowly immerse foot into paraffin and remove. ( feet are more sensitive to heat than hands – dip only portion of the foot on first dip, and entire foot on subsequent dips)
  4. Wait 5-7 seconds, repeat 3, remove.
  5. Repeat 3-5 times
  6. Cover foot with plastic liner bag and terry boot
  7. After 10 minutes, remove boot, move foot and toes to loosen paraffin and remove it in liner bag
  8. Discard used paraffin

Tips for Best Results:

  • The more layers of paraffin, the easier it is to remove.
  • If the area to be treated has a lot of hair, apply additional layers of paraffin. (Paraffin will not remove hair.)
  • Dip to the same level each time so that an even amount of paraffin covers the area to be treated and there is a thick edge to grasp when removing the paraffin.
  • To build up thicker layers, wait a few seconds (until the shine goes away) in between dips.
  • Don’t flex your fingers or break the “glove” of paraffin in between dips.
  • Keep the paraffin in place for 10 to 15 minutes. (The more layers, the longer the heat lasts, and an insulated mitt or boot will cause the heat to last even longer.) Because you will grow accustomed to the heat, it may seem like the heat is gone before it actually is.
  • Before applying paraffin with a brush, preheat the brush by letting it sit in the Therabath Pro for five minutes

Skin Miracle From Down Under! - Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil is known to treat a variety of skin concerns, and is widely used in spa treatments. Tea tree oil is also a natural antiseptic, which means it’s capable of killing bacteria, so it's great for uses in facial treatments and masks designed for acne, as it has been shown to be effective on problem skin while causing less irritation. It is also used in many body treatments as well.

Aside from skin treatments, tea tree oil is perfect for use in nail treatments, scalp and hair treatments, and aromatherapy. You can also blend tea tree essential oil with an unscented massage cream, for a more relaxing, cooling massage experience.

Used in nail treatments, tea tree is great for healing inflamed or infected skin irritations, as well as softening the cuticles when blended with jojoba, avocado, and lavender oils.

For scalp treatments, tea tree oil is very effective at eliminating dandruff, as it will help unblock clogged hair follicles to eliminate the problem. You can add a drop to shampoo or massage directly onto the scalp.

As for aromatherapy, tea tree oil can ease congestion and soothe chest pain when used in a diffuser. Also, by adding a few drops to water in a spray bottle to mist the room, it will give off a fresh, relaxing scent. It is similar to Eucalyptus essential oil, which has similar benefits.

This amazing oil comes from Australia, where over 300 species of tea trees naturally grow and we have a wide variety of tea tree products for your spa here at Pure Spa Direct!

21st Century Treatments- Cashing In on Gadget Addictions!

With more gadgets seemingly glued to everyone's hands and staring at computer screens all day and night, people are experiencing technology-related pains.

I just read an article in Day Spa magazine about more and more spas gearing treatments for people experiencing pain and fatigue from their electronic addictions.

Commonly seen issues include repetition injuries to the hands, wrists and forearms, tightness in the neck/shoulder area, and puffy eyes with dark circles from staring at screens until wee hours of the night.

Over time these injuries can become extremely painful and continue to get worse. This technological addiction provides a great opportunity to market treatments and increase sales, all without any or much cost to you!

You can simply offer a massage that covers the specific areas affected by overuse, or even let them pick 3 areas such as hands, forearms and neck. Come up with creative names for the treatments, how about the "Computer Slave Service" (I never claimed to be clever!) to set them apart from your regular services. You can even have special days offering stress relief packages..."unplugged days," if you will.

If you offer yoga or even have some extra space to offer it, you can offer stretching classes to literally pry people away from their gadgets.

The article had some great jumping off points,
Check out the article here:
Tech Busting Services

Depending on which type of services your business provides, Pure Spa Direct can help!

We carry a wide variety of massage lotions, massage oils, relaxing eye maskDr. Temt Silk / Sericin Eye Gel (great for tired puffy eyes!), collagen eye treatments, yoga mats and much much more!

If you offer facials there are some cool products designed to alleviate stress:
Prosana Anti-Stress Lavender Mask / 2.2 Lbs (also available in single use packs)

You can also retail stress busting items and advise your clients to take a 10 minute electronic free break every day! Here are some of my favorites:

ESS Roman Chamomile Pure Essential Oil
Kava Stress Relief Tea 16 Tea Bags by Yogi Tea Company
Lotus Touch Stress Management Essential Oil Blend / 10 mL
Stress Brochure 25/Package

Skin Scanners Helps You Analyze Your Clients' Skin AND Generate Bookings + Profits!

Seeing Is Believing... BOTH the Esthetician
AND the Client can Dramatically See the
Client's Skin Damage with a Skin Scanner!
Skin damage... everyone has some, but it is not always obvious to the naked eye.  However, with the use of a "Skin Scanner", you can see dramatic indications of a variety of issues.  By doing a skin analysis, you can advise your clients how to help reverse existing damage and prevent future skin damage... helping them stay younger looking and healthier.

The Skin Scanner uses a special ultraviolet filter to reveal underlying damage in the skin long before it reaches the surface. The procedure is quick and completely painless. You ask the client to place face into the scanner. It will display problems in the form of different colors for different conditions. Blue is normal, but white indicates thickened skin, violet shows dehydration, yellow means acne, red indicates oiliness and dark blue pigmentation. The skin scanner allows both the Esthetician AND the client to see the issues. By participating in identifying their own skin problems,  your clients will be very open to your suggestions for helping as "seeing is believing". Think of a Skin Scanner as a Wood's Lamp that shares the results with the Esthetician and the Client simultaneously.

A 15 minute Skin Scanner consultation will all you to explain what clients can do to help their skin all without the obligation to book a facial treatment or purchase any products.  But, but displaying the dramatic analysis to the client to see for themselves, Estheticians typically find very little resistance to move on to facial treatments and the sale of products to take home to help correct the issues.  You'll find your return on the nominal investment in a Skin Scanner is phenomenal - in treatment bookings, retail sales and client trust. Re-scans on follow-up visits will clearly show the results of your treatments and use of the associated retail products.

Most Skin Scanners are portable, allowing you to move them with ease from treatment room to treatment room for consultations.

Pure Spa Direct offers a variety of Skin Scanners:

Tips for Retail Success

We are barely past Halloween, and yet the time has officially come for all spas, salons, wellness centers and medi-spas to stock up on the holiday retail.  While retail products should be an integral part of your business plan year round, the holidays provide an additional impetus for your clients to browse, shop and buy.

We always advise our clients to retail, but the question is How? How do you transition from having products on display to constantly needing restock your shelves?  Well, here is a handy little guide:

Tips for Retail Success:

  1. EDUCATION.  Become THE source for information for all things retail by educating you staff.  Hold multiple training workshops and dispense reading materials so that your employees are able to comfortably and knowledgeably explain the following for all products.
    • Purpose
    • Ingredients
    • Features
    • Benefits
    • Application Procedure
    • Potential Reactions
    • Brand History
  2. TESTERS.  One is much more likely to purchase a product when he or she can touch it, smell it, taste it, etc.  When you shop at stores such as Sephora or Ulta, there are samples for virtually every single product.  By investing in at least 1 tester per retail item, your clients will be significantly more likely to invest themselves into the product.
  3. INCENTIVE PROGRAMS.  As a Salon or Spa owner, your main focus is increasing your business profit.  One of the main focuses for your employees, however, is increasing their personal income.  Have your goals meet in the middle by providing incentive programs and contests for selling retail products.  Just as your clients need a little push to invest in retail, your employees need motivation for selling products and boosting business. By offering bonuses or a rewards program for top sellers, you can boost sales, profits and company morale! In addition, certain manufacturers have their own rewards program in place.  By selling their products, you receive samples and complimentary items.  These free gifts can then be passed on to your victorious employees, at no expense to you. A total Win-Win-Win!
  4. INTEL. The easiest way to decide what products to retail is to get the information directly from the source: your clients!  Train your employees to be engaging and asking key questions, including the following:
    • What hair/facial/nail products are being used at home.
    • Opinions about said products.
    • Upcoming plans and events, such as vacations, weddings, graduation etc.
    • Personal cosmetic and aesthetic concerns.
She was just introduced to her spa's new retail selections.
  5. AN EXPERIENCE.  According to Jill Van Ausdal of The Spa at Stein Eriksen Lodge, you can increase retail sales by providing an all-encompassing experience instead, rather than just providing a single treatment for your client.  When the service is taken from a treatment to an experience, retail automatically becomes a part of the equation.
The team here at Pure Spa is literally chock-full of information, facts, figures, ideas and suggestions.  If you need help deciding what to retail or how to retail it, give us a call any time!

When Your Skin Gets a COLD too! Spa Treatments to Comfort Skin

If having a cold is not miserable enough, we have to contend with our skin getting sick too.  It never fails to happen to me! My skin goes haywire, and I can usually tell when I am starting to get sick by how my skin is behaving.

Clues of Seasonal Cold SKIN Blues:
- Zits gone wild. New shapes, sizes and colors cropping up all the face.
Restore Your Skin's
Healthy Appearance
After a NASTY cold!
- Over dryness from nasal sprays, decongestants, antihistamines
- Puffy and droopy eyes and cheeks that make me look like a morphed former version of myself.
- Watery, runny eyes that burn with every blink.

And these symptoms can stick around for about a week or so AFTER the cold has passed. It can be kind of depressing to feel better and look in the mirror and see your skin didn't get the memo!  So I wanted to share some products that you can use in your professional Facial Treatments on your clients this cold season (once they are well of course).

BEST Bets for De-Puffing, Hydrating & Rejuvenating:

Cucumber Gel Mask by Amber: Has the ability to enhance water retention in tissue allowing the epidermis to achieve greater suppleness. With the combination of cucumber extract, allantoin and aloe vera this product is effective in soothing irritated skin.

Elasto-Gel Sinus Mask: I'm obsessed with this mask! It can be used hot or cold (I like it warm - a few seconds in the microwave) and is perfect for relief of pain and swelling of superficial soft tissue in the eye, nose and sinus area. Wrap with a thin layer facial diaper or disposable soft towel. Cover is removable for washing too.

Lymphatic Drainage - The IONTO Skin Regulator:

- Four areas that benefit from the skin regulator:
- Nerves, blood and lymph vessels: relieves blockage and removes waste and toxins via blood and lymph drainage.
- Connective tissue: balances the flow and activates the metabolism at the cellular level.
- Epidermis: increases absorption of active substances.
- Muscles: loosens tension.

Ahhhhhh... relief & results!

Just Sisal While You Work!

No, I did not spell "whistle" wrong, I am writing about  Sisal!

What is  Sisal?  According to Wikipedia:
"Sisal (Agave sisalana) is an agave that yields a stiff fibre traditionally used in making twine, rope and also dartboards. The term may refer either to the plant or the fibre, depending on context. It is sometimes incorrectly referred to as sisal hemp because hemp was for centuries a major source for fibre, so other fibres were sometimes named after it."
You might be asking yourself, OK Doug, what do Agave plant ropes have to do with spas/salons?  Well, it turns out that Sisal fibers are ALSO used to make a variety of exfoliation products... sponges, soap sacks, mitts, gloves, pads, brushes and more!

Sisal is used for deep exfoliation and massage of the skin, and it is frequently used dry. This type of rough exfoliation may take some getting used to, but it is a good way to slough off dead skin and reveal fresher, softer skin underneath.   Sisal is also very commonly used wet, in the shower (in a standard shower or during a Vichy Shower treatment), for slightly more gentle exfoliation.

Whether the Sisal is used wet or dry, it is best to begin with a gentle scrubbing until the skin becomes more used to the exfoliation of the sisal bristles, and then more pressure can be applied for a deeper exfoliating massage. Sisal can be used on the back as well as other rough places, such as the knees or feet, or even all over the body for a full-body exfoliating treatment. Sisal should not be used on more sensitive areas like the face.

Because the Sisal may also be able to improve circulation, some recommend always brushing in a circular motion, toward the heart. One may use a sisal brush every day, once a week, or as needed... any use can provide skin benefits!

So remember, if you offer exfoliation treatments or are looking for great retail items for home use... "Just Sisal While You Work!"

Create your own Spa Treatments with Spa Pantry!

A little experimentation will always help in the Spa industry.  Mixing and matching certain butters, creams and oils will be the craze at your spa...if you get it right.  For instance, something as basic as mixing Spa Pantry's Whipped Cocoa butter and Body Concepts Aloe Vera will give you a creation that you can use as part of your services!
By mixing these two items you get a great moisturizer with so many benefits.

Aloe Vera:
  • contains antioxidants vitamins A, C and E which calms the skin from irritation an inflammation
  • helps with dermatitis or psoriasis
  • it helps with wound healing
Mixed with the cocoa butter, you will have a fast-absorbing mixture that retains body moisture and softens the skin.  The reason for this is that cocoa butter melts at body temperature, so the moment of application is the moment the skin will absorb the product.  Cocoa butter leaves a protective barrier that will help protect the skin from the harm of everyday life.

You can even use this product as part of your massage services.  Research has indicated that massaging the skin with cocoa butter can help boost the immune system and relieve stress.  I wouldn't mind getting a massage with this lotion.  Along with all of the topical benefits of mixing these to items together is the benefit of using it for aromatherapy, the sweet smelling aroma will definitely add to the massage experience.
Be bold and experiment,  Cocoa Butter and Aloe Vera are just two items you can experiment with.  Visit Pure Spa Direct to see what other items we have for you to use for your secret recipe.

For the entire month of November, we choose a list of products to put on sale (obviously cause we love them and our clients do too), but also to discount products that are must-haves for your Spa or Salon, to weather the up-coming winter and holiday months. A major necessity is the EarthLite Basics Table Warmer.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again… I hate the cold and everything about it! When I go for my spa treatments, regardless if there is ten feet of snow outside, or the air-conditioning is blasting, if you expect me to get undressed, I am hoping your chair, bed, or massage table is equipped with the EarthLite Basics Table Warmer.

The EarthLite Basics Table Warmer is a massage therapist dream and will help to easily provide the most luxurious massage experience for your clients. The warmth and comfortable fleece top will allure your clients to drift away into a cozy spell of relaxation and tranquility.
