Modern Wellness Approaches For Any Business

Visiting the spa is no longer only an indulgence,
but is often seen necessary for health benefits.
Wellness. We hear this word everywhere these days. The world is finally focusing on being healthy inside and out, from the foods we eat to the skin care products we choose.

Spas and salons are in a prime position to capitalize on wellness services no matter what they regularly offer.Years ago, people went to the spas once or twice a year to pamper themselves or to celebrate or commemorate a special occasion. Now, spa goers understand not only the stress relief benefits, but also the specific health conditions that spas can assist them with. This results in more frequent visits and visiting for more than one concern. This alone should be the reason you offer packages, specifically the "choose-your-own adventure" type of package -  give clients options to address their specific concerns! Options make clients feel in control and that you truly care about what is important to them.

I just read an article that had tips for businesses to vamp up their wellness offerings. One of the ideas that stuck out most was highlighting a different treatment genre each month. By genre the author was referring to trying a new piece of equipment, theme or type of treatment.

For equipment, try offering something new that you aren't currently offering. A safe way to be sure there is some interest is to poll your current clients. Ask them if there are services they would are receiving elsewhere, are wanting to try, or are curious about. Once you bring it in, offer a special introductory rate for the first month, create a new package based around it, including other services that complement it.

For themes, if you have multiple treatment rooms, pick one as your destination or theme room. You can change the decor of this room monthly, quarterly or whatever works for you. For example, during winter months you may want to have an exotic island theme with warm pictures on the walls, bright table linens, even pick relaxing tropical music to play in the room. Offer tropical treatments to be done in this room such as a coconut massage or Desert Mineral Detox Body Scrub! In summer months offer a refreshing cucumber facial or a cooling pain relief massage.

You could even pick a different type of service to focus on each month or specific ingredient. The key is to keep changing it up, make it exciting and enticing. Your clients will always have something new to look forward to and you create an opportunity to introduce them to everything you have to offer.

Finally, take a look at your current retail area. Is it full of individual products from skin care lines, some candles or gift type items? Why not make up some bundles? You could pair a facial tanner, detox scrub and a luxurious hydrating anti-aging lotion for a feel good at home glow bundle. You could bundle a candle with a pedicure kit and polish. Not to sound repetitive but, creativity is key. Think of bundles you or your friends would like, ask your clients what they would like. Not only does asking your clients give you valuable information but it makes them feel like you care.

The owners and manager I've spoken to all seem to agree that keeping things fresh, exciting and checking in with their clients often is a vital part of their success. I've heard time and time again, ask yourself if you would be excited to go to your business...how often and why? What would make you want to go more or spend more?

temperatures and cold hands on my skin can ruin a treatment experience. This is one of the reasons I NEVER book morning appointments in the Fall here in New York. Most Spa's shut off their heaters overnight to save on electricity, inadvertently turning their treatment rooms, and all the lotions and gels into a deep freeze. It can take up to an hour to get temperatures regulated, and by that time I can't see my breath in the room, the treatment has ended.

Exfoliation - An Important Step in Your Facial and Body Services!

Exfoliation is an extremely important and very essential part of your facial services. Build up of dead skin cells will cause skin to look dry and dull and proper exfoliation removes the barrier of dead skin cells clogging the skin and uncovers fresh new cells below. This opens the way for moisturizing products to penetrate more deeply into the skin, which makes them more effective. Not only is exfoliation critical during facials, it is also important that your clients are paying attention to other areas as well. Other areas like hands, feet, and even the scalp also need to be rid of dead skin cells in order to keep the skin in its best condition!

Hands
Dead skin cells build up on the hands, causing them to look dry and dull. Even the nail beds need to be attended to since they’re inclined to become ragged and develop tears and hangnails.


Feet

Tips for Retail Success

We are barely past Halloween, and yet the time has officially come for all spas, salons, wellness centers and medi-spas to stock up on the holiday retail.  While retail products should be an integral part of your business plan year round, the holidays provide an additional impetus for your clients to browse, shop and buy.

We always advise our clients to retail, but the question is How? How do you transition from having products on display to constantly needing restock your shelves?  Well, here is a handy little guide:

Tips for Retail Success:

  1. EDUCATION.  Become THE source for information for all things retail by educating you staff.  Hold multiple training workshops and dispense reading materials so that your employees are able to comfortably and knowledgeably explain the following for all products.
    • Purpose
    • Ingredients
    • Features
    • Benefits
    • Application Procedure
    • Potential Reactions
    • Brand History
  2. TESTERS.  One is much more likely to purchase a product when he or she can touch it, smell it, taste it, etc.  When you shop at stores such as Sephora or Ulta, there are samples for virtually every single product.  By investing in at least 1 tester per retail item, your clients will be significantly more likely to invest themselves into the product.
  3. INCENTIVE PROGRAMS.  As a Salon or Spa owner, your main focus is increasing your business profit.  One of the main focuses for your employees, however, is increasing their personal income.  Have your goals meet in the middle by providing incentive programs and contests for selling retail products.  Just as your clients need a little push to invest in retail, your employees need motivation for selling products and boosting business. By offering bonuses or a rewards program for top sellers, you can boost sales, profits and company morale! In addition, certain manufacturers have their own rewards program in place.  By selling their products, you receive samples and complimentary items.  These free gifts can then be passed on to your victorious employees, at no expense to you. A total Win-Win-Win!
  4. INTEL. The easiest way to decide what products to retail is to get the information directly from the source: your clients!  Train your employees to be engaging and asking key questions, including the following:
    • What hair/facial/nail products are being used at home.
    • Opinions about said products.
    • Upcoming plans and events, such as vacations, weddings, graduation etc.
    • Personal cosmetic and aesthetic concerns.

  5. AN EXPERIENCE.  According to Jill Van Ausdal of The Spa at Stein Eriksen Lodge, you can increase retail sales by providing an all-encompassing experience instead, rather than just providing a single treatment for your client.  When the service is taken from a treatment to an experience, retail automatically becomes a part of the equation.
