Scent or No Scent, That Is The Question

Many clients will ask what the most popular scents are at various times during the year. While it is incredibly important to have the right scent(s) to boost business and create a mood, it's also important to remember the power of unscented.

There is a good chunk of people who either are allergic or sensitive to scents, or flat out don't enjoy them for one reason or another. Do you have unscented options for your treatments? Do you have a "scent free" area for clients with severe sensitivities or who may be experiencing migraine symptoms?

Why not ask clients or send out an email poll about it? Get their thoughts on having a scent free section or if there are ever times they would prefer to have an option of scented or unscented. The worst that will happen is they have zero opinion. For those clients who DO have a preference, it will make a huge impression on them by asking....and accommodating their responses.

From massages to nail services, sometimes a simple option can make all the difference!

The Scent Of A Man

Smell is an incredibly powerful sense that can have amazing results in your business.

Most clients I speak with are all using essential oils throughout their spa in multiple ways. From diffusing the air, infusing oils into various treatments to retail products - there's no reason to not incorporate aromatherapy!

I see a lot of lavender, vanilla, the menthol families and citrus families with most spas. With the steady rise of male clients each year, do you have "manlier" scents going on any where?

The possibilities are up to your imagination!

You can have a "guys only" room or section of the spa. Decked out with furniture and treatments geared towards guys. Here are some awesome pieces to think about:

Kasper Classic Barber Chair
Vilho Salon Styling Chair
Rigmora Styling Chair
DIR Pedicure Station Dragon
Davidson Barber Chair - Red (this is one of my all time favorite chairs!)
Les Series Reception Chair / Black by BIGA

In those areas, be sure to have more manly scents along with a few of the industry standards. Here are some awesome ones to try out:

Make sure your straight razors, hot lather machine and clippers/trimmers are all on point!

Last and certainly not least, don't forget retail. There are so many amazing retail products geared towards men!

Here are some top sellers here:

Even if you don't offer men's services, have men's products for their mothers, wives, sisters, girlfriends, etc to get for them!!!

Stop And Smell The Flowers While Boosting Business!

We've all heard some variation of "stop to smell the roses" at some point in time. While it usually refers to slowing down or being more aware to appreciate things, it can be beneficial for your business.

What flower menu options do you have? Are they customizable?
Offering services that utilize flower power (I tried to resist, I really did!) in some way is always popular with clients! Making it customizable is a way to stand out from your competition. Having a raw ingredient bar for clients is also a fun way to engage clients.
If you offer hydrotherapy, do you offer muslin bags to drop in (complimentary or as an add on!) that are filled with flowers and raw ingredients? Again, having clients choose their own (you can have a set of pre-filled ones -like these or make your own-to choose from or give them an empty muslin bag and send them to the raw bar!) will get clients talking (to you AND their friends/family/coworkers), increase likelihood of add on and retail sales.

When was the last time you changed the floral options?
Is lavender or rose the only scent you have (if your business is tied in to lavender or rose in any way, disregard!)? Your clients may be getting tired of the same old smells. Refresh their senses with some new scents. There are enough varieties out there to ensure you'll never get bored of them all. You can choose from individual oils or blends or even candles! Variety is key here, you never want your clients to be bored or complacent - you want them excited to see what's new every time they walk in your door.

With all this fresh new floral activity freshening up your menu and environment, your reawakened clients will be eager to try new things, buy more things and tell more people how awesome you are. As I have mentioned numerous times, it's the little things :)

Scentual Sleep - Aromatherapy Time!

Sleep....something most people these days are not getting enough of. Clients coming in for any service, are coming in to also get away from the craziness of their daily routines. I read an article recently on some spas offering sleep themed services to help their client's get even more relaxation out of their visit. Some were even extending hours on certain days, offering services in darker lit rooms. Even for the ones who were offering their sleep services all day long (you never know what clients work schedules may be!) having services designed to enhance sleep is an awesome way to pull new client's in.

Now for the scent part which, is one of the most important things for me when I enter ANY business, especially a spa. For now, we'll focus on scents that will help he overall relaxation experience which in turn, will allow the client to go home and snuggle into bed. Here are some of the top essential oils that your client's will be dreaming of:

Essential Oil Blend - Peaceful Sleep by Now --with chamomile, lavender and sandlewood (plus more!) you cannot go wrong with this blend. It's the warm fuzzy blanket you had as a kid, in a scent.

ESS® Relaxation Oil Blend - I have this in the diffuser in my bedroom right now. It's an interesting blend of earthy and calming scents. If you are looking for a scent that will make your client's ask where to buy it...this is it and you can retail it!

ESS Roman Chamomile Pure Essential Oil - a tried and true favorite for relaxation

Lotus Touch Relaxation Essential Oil Blend

Check out the full line of essential oils here!

Also, have some eye packs to retail to your clients and for use in services!

It Just Makes "Scents"!

Don't you just love how spa's smell? Well you’re supposed to. The purpose is to feel healthier the second you step foot into a spa. When you take your first breath of air, it should be a pleasurable moment. The spa environment is detrimental to the spa experience. A powerful way to make a first impression is through the aroma of the spa. Our sense of smell is more sensitive than any of other five senses, and has a strong influence on our emotions and moods.

Scent Therapy is an effective way to help clients escape into the mode of relaxation. Adding a Room Mist to you spa is something so simple, yet so valuable. Biotone, a well known manufacturer of spa and salon supplies, make some excellent aromatherapy and room sprays. They have specialized blends already formulated to promote the sense of well-being to the mind, body, and spirit. All Biotone Mists are formulated with 100% pure essential oils, and are naturally fragrant. Some favorites are listed below:
Popular Places to Spray:
  • Welcoming area
  • Massage room
  • Linens
  • Bathroom
  • Any room or Office
Our sense of smell is connected really well to our memories. Just one whiff of a familiar smell can trigger memories of our childhood, or places we’ve visited. How does your spa want to be remembered?
