Earth Day 2015

In honor of Earth Day being this week, what better way to celebrate than stocking up on some organic, eco-friendly products for your boutique? I love all things organic and natural, especially if it's earth friendly! Earth Day started back in the 1970s to bring awareness to environmental issues and how to address them, specifically with the passing of the Clean Air and Water Act which was groundbreaking at the time. Looking For Something Daring?

Brain Pain Slowing You Down? Don't Lose Money Because of a Headache!

It seems for one reason or ten almost everyone experiences some form of brain pain at some point. Whether it's a stress headache or a full blown migraine, brain pain can seriously affect your routine.

If you've ever experienced a migraine then you know the pain, light sensitivity and nausea they bring. It can sometimes be difficult to hold anything down, including pain relief medicines. It's All About The Money! - Retailing in Your Spa/Salon

Billions of dollars are spent on beauty and self-care products every year! There is huge income potential if you are offering retail items. Depending on the type of spa or salon, retail should account for 30 to 50% of your net profit.

You don't necessarily need to be a salesperson to retail products in your spa - you really just need to be able make honest recommendations. The best and easiest way to get your retail products moving, is to actually be using them on your clients during services! You can explain the products and their benefits, while educating your client on the importance of at home care also. If your client is happy with the service and products you used, they are more likely to want to purchase these products for continued use at home, in-between services.

Using the products yourself is also a good idea, so if you get compliments on something like your glowing complexion, you can offer a service AND suggest an item you just so happen to be selling at your spa! For example, if you offer make-up applications and you are retailing the cosmetic products you use on clients, they are easily going to want to purchase items to take with them for touch-ups! Or if you do hair coloring services, you can retail color safe hair care products for at home use. There is something to recommend after any service.

Just Sisal While You Work!


No, I did not spell "whistle" wrong, I am writing about  Sisal!

What is  Sisal?  According to Wikipedia:
"Sisal (Agave sisalana) is an agave that yields a stiff fibre traditionally used in making twine, rope and also dartboards. The term may refer either to the plant or the fibre, depending on context. It is sometimes incorrectly referred to as sisal hemp because hemp was for centuries a major source for fibre, so other fibres were sometimes named after it."
You might be asking yourself, OK Doug, what do Agave plant ropes have to do with spas/salons?  Well, it turns out that Sisal fibers are ALSO used to make a variety of exfoliation products... sponges, soap sacks, mitts, gloves, pads, brushes and more!

Sisal is used for deep exfoliation and massage of the skin, and it is frequently used dry. This type of rough exfoliation may take some getting used to, but it is a good way to slough off dead skin and reveal fresher, softer skin underneath.   Sisal is also very commonly used wet, in the shower (in a standard shower or during a Vichy Shower treatment), for slightly more gentle exfoliation.

Whether the Sisal is used wet or dry, it is best to begin with a gentle scrubbing until the skin becomes more used to the exfoliation of the sisal bristles, and then more pressure can be applied for a deeper exfoliating massage. Sisal can be used on the back as well as other rough places, such as the knees or feet, or even all over the body for a full-body exfoliating treatment. Sisal should not be used on more sensitive areas like the face.

Because the Sisal may also be able to improve circulation, some recommend always brushing in a circular motion, toward the heart. One may use a sisal brush every day, once a week, or as needed... any use can provide skin benefits!

Time to Outgrow Your Ingrowns!


I think we all can agree that one of the most frustrating aspects of beautification is the inevitable ingrown hair. After going through the time, effort and expended money to receive a depilatory treatment such as, say, a bikini wax, seeing those unsightly red bumps can cause any lady, or gent' for that matter, to quit waxing altogether.

There are mutiple things that you can suggest and sell to your clients to prevent ingrown hairs:
