It's All About The Money! - Retailing in Your Spa/Salon

Billions of dollars are spent on beauty and self-care products every year! There is huge income potential if you are offering retail items. Depending on the type of spa or salon, retail should account for 30 to 50% of your net profit.

You don't necessarily need to be a salesperson to retail products in your spa - you really just need to be able make honest recommendations. The best and easiest way to get your retail products moving, is to actually be using them on your clients during services! You can explain the products and their benefits, while educating your client on the importance of at home care also. If your client is happy with the service and products you used, they are more likely to want to purchase these products for continued use at home, in-between services.

Using the products yourself is also a good idea, so if you get compliments on something like your glowing complexion, you can offer a service AND suggest an item you just so happen to be selling at your spa! For example, if you offer make-up applications and you are retailing the cosmetic products you use on clients, they are easily going to want to purchase items to take with them for touch-ups! Or if you do hair coloring services, you can retail color safe hair care products for at home use. There is something to recommend after any service.

Eclipse the Competition with Client Cards

As we all know, the name of the game in business is making money. Service industries, such as the beauty industry, have to come up with more nuanced ways to do this, however, because of the diversity in the client base. Every day, I discuss with Spa Owners and Independent Contractors alike how they can make their clients more comfortable while also making their own lives less complicated in the process. One of the keys to a happy client is recognition of their wants and needs. I love it when I walk into a spa or salon and the people know my name, know I will want my hair dyed plum red, my nails done in cobalt blue, and my massage very thorough rather than gentle.

One of the best ways to fulfill the desire for recognition in your clients is to fill out a Client Card for every single customer who walks through your door. Each card has space to fill out contact information, what service was rendered, what your Client liked, and what you may want to avoid next time. Hair stylists can keep track of specific formulas used to create the perfect hair color for that specific person. Nail techs can make a note after each appointment of what color polish the client used, in case they would like it in the future. Spray Tan Technicians can make notes regarding which solutions the customer looks best in.
