Lighting...Function and Ambience

I just read an article on lighting in a massage therapy office that got me thinking. We spend so much time and effort into creating the perfect space to reflect us, our vision and to make our clients feel welcome and relaxed. From the front end furniture and room decor to the plush table linens and Feng Shui placement of everything in the office.

I'm sure the look of the light fixtures and lamps were taken into great consideration before adding them to your space. How about the actual light itself? Is the front end lighting drastically brighter than the treatment room causing the clients eye to adjust quickly and possibly even uncomfortably? Is it too dark to where your clients may experience difficulty filling out their intake forms?

How about the lighting in the treatment room? Is it so dim that the client may feel as it is less than professional and become uncomfortable? Is it so bright that the client can't relax fully?  Finding a happy medium is key.

It's always great to find lighting that has a dimmer switch so you can control the level. Also, experiment with LED bulbs versus regular bulbs...you may be surprised at what a difference it can make.

Another great way to add comfortable and controllable lighting is flameless candles. With no flame to worry about, these are a safe light source that can be added in groups anywhere. You can pick and choose which ones to keep on, even customize it for any client who has vision sensitivities.

It's may also be a good idea to ask client, therapist even friends for their opinions when it comes to these things. Sometimes we may overlook small things because we are so used to them or have more pressing things on our minds at the time. Fresh eyes can make all the difference in perfecting your
space!
