Summer Scalp Treatment!

Many people tend to forget about their scalp/top of the head when it comes to summer sun care. Here is a great treatment for clients who may be dealing with dry, itchy scalps to help provide some cooling relief:

In a rubber mixing bowl, mix together 1 tablespoon fine dead sea salt, 1 tablespoon wheatgerm oil, 5 drops peppermint essential oil and 4 drops of tea tree essential oil. Place the bowl in a mud warmer or hot towel cabinet to keep warm until ready to use.

Shampoo and rinse, give a light towel dry and apply the warmed mixture to the scalp. Gently massage the scalp for about 10 minutes. Remove with a light shampoo and rinse - that's it!

Simple, effective and cooling!

Aromatherapy Spotlight: Frankincense

Stress and tension are major problems today. Adults are so caught up with work, family, and other obligations that often times they forget to take care of themselves. That's where you come in!

Spas, salons, wellness centers, doctors offices, and other businesses are used as a form of self-care. Your clients are leaving their services refreshed, re-energized, and happy! But how can you help create these positive emotions and ensure they will return?

Try aromatherapy! These scents will resonate with your clients, and they will trigger a good memory!

One of the most soothing essential oils is frankincense. It actively slows down your breathing and allows you to take longer and deeper breaths. This helps you alleviate fear, anxiety, nervous tension, and stress.

Frankincense is recommended especially for dry, sensitive, or mature skin. It helps rejuvenate skin tone and prevent fine lines and wrinkles.

My favorite brand is ESS® Frankincense Pure Essential Oil

Pro tip: Diffuse in your waxing studio, medispa, or doctors office to help relax clients who may be nervous about a service or procedure.

Essential Oils for Oily Skin

Many people believe that they need to treat oily, acne prone skin with strong treatments, which strips and remove all oils from the skin. This couldn't be further from the truth!

Aromatherapy treatments are aimed at balancing and reducing sebum productions. Just like traditional anti-acne products oils contain anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and soothing compounds. They are also packed with things like antioxidants and vitamins which are especially healing and protective.

Essential oils that are beneficial for oily skin include;

  • geranium
  • lavender
  • cedarwood
  • palmarosa
  • niaouli
  • juniper berry
  • tea tree
  • ylang-ylang
  • cypress
  • grapefruit
  • bergamot
  • myrtle

Pro Tip: finish a treatment with flower water that's targeted for oily skin. These include verbena water, witch hazel, orange flower water, and cornflower water.

Migraine and Headache Awareness Month

June is national migraine and headache awareness month and a great opportunity for nearly any business!

Many clients are on the lookout for natural products, treatments and solutions putting you in a great position to offer an alternative to over the counter headache medicine. Something as simple as offering scalp massage or an essential oil designed for headaches, can be the alternative your client hadn't yet thought of! Booking time in a relaxation room as a 'headache blaster packages" where clients can choose from various services (or just ala carte add ons to make their own quiet time perfect!) in a comfortable relaxation chair. From low lights, optional soft music, personalized aroma scalp massages, ice or heat therapy- so many possibilities to make it your own!

Take it even further with headache retail packages! From essential oils and diffusers to magic globes (amazing for sinus pressure!) and relaxing eye masks - talk to your clients and see what causes their headaches and recommend an easy at home treatment - the moment they feel relief, they may be hooked!

Benefits of Peppermint

Peppermint is one of the most popular essential oils used! It is known for treating all types of digestive issues, but its benefits do not end there.

It is fresh, bright, penetrating, and historically can alleviate symptoms of shock. Mentally, it helps alleviate feelings of inferiority and insecurity and can deepen any intuitive insight. Making it a great fit in wellness centers, specifically Reiki healing sessions.

Peppermint is phenomenal when used with a facial steamer. It deeply cleanses and decongests the skin. Because the skin is softened the dead skin cells are easier to remove. It is especially beneficial for acne because of its antiseptic properties.

Pro tip: Purchase a sample felt fabric from a craft store and simply place pieces of felt in front of the steamer nozzle with the oil of your choice to make any steamer an aromatherapy steamer!

Flu Facials?

It's no secret the flu has been rampant this year, along with some strong flu like illnesses going around. I've seen a few spas start to incorporate "Flu Facials" the last few weeks to help ease any lingering suffering.

If you have never had the flu, I commend your immune system! If you have had the flu, you know the muscle ache and facial pain from congestion. Once your client is on the road to recovery and back out in the world, a relaxing and clearing facial may sound heavenly!

Using products that are calming, cooling or refreshing starting with your cleanser, paying extra attention to facial pressure points. June Jacobs has a range of health driven products that would be perfect!

Warm facial towels or just a warm towel over the eyes can make a world of difference! A gentle face or scalp massage with a clearing essential oil like eucalyptus, peppermint or lemongrass makes an excellent add on service!

Making sure your towels, linens and blankets are soft and cozy along with optional herbal packs and teas can be just the thing your post flu clients are desperately needing!

How a Signature Scent Can Help Your Business

Businesses around the world are creating a signature scent, and so should you! Studies have proven that smells can trigger emotional reactions and memories. In fact, studies show that smell is more quickly associated with memories rather than visual or auditory cues.

How does this help you?
Most purchases are made with your heart rather than your head. A signature scent has multiple benefits that will increase client satisfaction and your pocket.

Some benefits include:
  1. Affecting Mood- When a client enters your business you automatically want them to be relaxed and excited. A targeted scent only adds to the overall decor, and environment.
  2. Brand Loyalty- When the client has a positive experience, the smell will be associated with that. Next time they come back the smell will be familiar, taking them back to the positive experience. Automatic mood boost!
  3. Expand the Space- Did you know that scents can help achieve an illusion of more, or less space? Light scents can make space feel larger. Sweet scents, woodsy, or spicy spaces can have the opposite effect and make space feel more cozy, comfy, and smaller.
  4. Mask Odors- There are certain services that emit an odor, that cannot be avoided. Mask hair color, chemicals, dental or doctor procedures, and more with a signature scent.
  5. Extend Shopping Time- It is proven that a pleasant scent will influence a client to stay longer. With the improvement of mood they are more likely to interact with staff, and examine multiple items. If you have a retail area, you have an opportunity to boost your sales and help the client with what they need.
So, what scent do you pick? The choice is yours!

Some of my personal favorites include:

This wonderful smelling blend helps to calm, soothe, and create a sense of wellbeing and promote positive mentality. It may be used to massage, bathe, vaporize, and diffuse.

Benefits:

Fall Menu Secret Weapon: Clove Essential Oil

We all know that pumpkin and cranberry are the sought after fall scents, flavor and menu items. If you are looking for a little something different to infuse some fall menu, take a look at clove essential oil.

Personally, the smell of clove always has a warm, comfort feeling to it. That little spice in fall foods that adds that something extra.  As an essential oil, it can bring about comforting memories or feelings of warmth, comfort and peace making it an excellent choice to add in to everything from massage oils, aromatherapy showers to pedicures.

It also blends well with citrus scents and not a lot is needed to achieve the full effect!

Butter Your Clients Up With Shea Butter

Looking to tighten up your spending, without sacrificing anything in your services? When was the last time you took a look at shea butter?

Did you just go, "oooh shea butter, I used to use/love that a few years ago"? You're not alone! The secret weapon of some savvy spas for years has been shea butter.

Chock full of oleic acid, a super hydrating fatty acid, shea butter should be in every room, station and on every trolley. It's also one of the most versatile products I can think of, as it can be used in almost any service. Use it an add on to any service you offer, it is great for retailing, and can be used as a carrier base for essential oils.

Clients with sensitive skin? Shea butter is gentle enough for even acne prone clients.

Not sure what services it can be easily incorporated in to? Here are a few to get your thoughts moving like butter:

Hair: can be used in/as a hair mask, can be used as an add on for a scalp massage (give clients a choice of essential oil to add in as well) to any other service

Massage: can be used as a carrier for essential oils, blends well with other oils like coconut and jojoba for a ridiculously luxurious feel.

Facials: helps promote elasticity, helps fade age spots and of course, it's been rumored to be a favorite of Cleopatra to keep her skin looking young and glowing

Body Treatments: slather this on your clients with a mylar blanket for a heavenly body wrap, use after a body scrub or dry brushing treatment, mix in an abrasive of your choice (salt, sugar, raw ingredients etc) for a cost effective and hydrating scrub

Nails: you can use this as a lotion or add in sugar or salt for a scrub

Sometimes the simplest of things can have the biggest impact for your clients, and your bottom line. Shea butter is high on that list!
