Summer Scalp Treatment!

Many people tend to forget about their scalp/top of the head when it comes to summer sun care. Here is a great treatment for clients who may be dealing with dry, itchy scalps to help provide some cooling relief:

In a rubber mixing bowl, mix together 1 tablespoon fine dead sea salt, 1 tablespoon wheatgerm oil, 5 drops peppermint essential oil and 4 drops of tea tree essential oil. Place the bowl in a mud warmer or hot towel cabinet to keep warm until ready to use.

Shampoo and rinse, give a light towel dry and apply the warmed mixture to the scalp. Gently massage the scalp for about 10 minutes. Remove with a light shampoo and rinse - that's it!

Simple, effective and cooling!

Acne is an ongoing concern for many spa clients across the world. From teenagers to adults, people are looking for effective, painless ways to treat acne. You can offer an easy add-on to your acne facials with the Blue LED Pulse Light Therapy for Acne by Meishida.
Several ground-breaking studies conducted by several medical groups in the United States and Europe have found that narrow-band, high-intensity light in the blue wavelength range can be a safe, gentle and effective approach to treating mild to moderate inflammatory acne.

Unlike some acne treatments, blue light at specific wavelengths does not produce damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays which have been shown to cause skin damage, does not result in dryness or discomfort associated with topical acne medications and does not cause any known side effects.

The advantages of Blue LED Pulse Light Acne Therapy include:

  • 100% Natural and Non-Invasive

  • Safe For All Ages and Safe For Daily Use

Product Of The Week: June Jacobs Brightening Moisturizer

The recommendation I've been asked for multiple times each day this week so far, is for a moisturizer. Dry, aging skin are on the forefront of client concerns.
My mother called me a week or so ago complaining that she just can't find an effective moisturizer that brightens. She said she had tried multiple ones that were okay but none seemed to brighten. Now my mother is in her 70's and isn't up on ingredients and things like that. She is the client who just needs recommendations from someone she trusts. How many of your clients are the same?

I sent her a bottle of the June Jacobs Brightening Moisturizer as a surprise. She noticed from the start that it just felt nicer when she put it on. She enjoyed not having to slather it on (a little goes a long way with June Jacobs products!) and how fresh it felt. She called me after 4 uses excited as her skin was no longer dry, and it was brighter already.

Paraben and preservative free, lactic acid for gentle exfoliation, combines with sweet almond oil and shea butter for the hydrating effects. Lemon peel extract rejuvenates and increases the luster of tired skin, while bearberry root, mulberry root, licorice extract and Gigawhite™ act as natural lightening agents to help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation. What that all means is your clients get a one-two punch of goodness leaving their skin soft, supple and looking younger!

I'm sharing this quick story as it is important to always be aware of who your clients are, not just what is going on with their skin. We may forget, as professionals immersed in the industry, that not everyone knows what may seem "novice" or "basic" terms, products or ingredients.

Test this out on yourself, your VIP clients or bring in a few to get clients feedback.

Salt vs Sugar Scrubs

Aside from the obvious difference, do your clients know which would be better for their skin? Clients may not always know the same information we think they do, and could be using the wrong product for their skin type or dermatological concerns.

While both exfoliate the skin, sugar tends to be less abrasive, making it preferable for clients with sensitive skin and gentler for use on the face or newly waxed skin. Sugar scrubs also tend to be more hydrating for the skin.

Salt scrubs are more abrasive, which makes them excellent for exfoliating before body treatments, are great for reducing inflammation and since salt is known for antibacterial properties, making it good for acne.

From back bar to retail sizing, we've got effective, profitable and great smelling options for both salt and sugar so you can customize for your clients!

Combat the 4 S's- Sun, Smoke, Sugar, and Stress

My new favorite brand is Farmaesthetics! I am obsessed with their packaging paired with their overall effectiveness. Made with completely natural, organic ingredients for multiple uses! All come with both a professional and retail size, making it an easy for your services and retail!

This weeks favorite of mine is Farmaesthetics Hand to Heel Softening Salve
When I first saw this product I thought it would be great for feet, heels specifically. But this all natural salve has more uses and is not limited to just that!
Applications & Benefits:

  • Softens rough, dry elbows, knees and heels
  • Cuticle and nail- bed treatment
  • Callus softener
  • Useful on diabetic skin conditions, such as cracked hardened heels.
  • Relieves symptoms of eczema (on infants as well).
  • Softens dry, flaking "cradle cap" in infants.
  • Diaper salve for baby rashes
It protects and heals the effects of work, wear and tear, exposure to the elements, wounds, burns (even those produced by laser surgery), bruises, and eczema (including childhood and nervous onset).

Calendula is a heady resinous marigold flower that contains potent active healing constituents. Nature's most unique compound, beeswax, provides germ killing protective barriers that lock in moisture. Lavender is added for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory agents, as well as a soothing scent, and a settling effect on the skin and nervous system. Peppermint and Beta Carotene add additional building blocks for tissue rejuvenation.

Product Of The Week: Alaskan Glacial Mud

Happy Friday!

This week, I'd like to spotlight Raw Alaska Glacial Mineral Mud.

Mud is always in style in this industry, from facials masks to body wraps. As a massage therapist, after a few years in I decided to give offering various mud add-ons a shot. As a mobile therapist at the time, I thought I was nuts for just the thought of mobile mud! I was able to make it work for me, and my client response surprised the heck out of me! All of them wanted to try it. After the trial run, some alternated their massages with mud treatments.

Mud works.

Alaska Glacial mud works. Containing more than 60 nourishing major and trace elements to promote healthy skin cell regeneration, you may find clients requesting mud packages.

Raw Alaskan Glacial. The name says it all.
Straight from the Copper River Delta in Alaska, enriched with a special combination of certified organic and wildcrafted botanical extracts from the Pacific Northwest that are chosen for their moisturizing, skin-softening, and anti-aging and immunoprotective properties. Natural as natural gets.

Are your clients hesitant on mud treatments due to that lovely, mud smell?  You can choose vanilla lavender and lavender peppermint. The slight tingle from the peppermint feels amazing, in my opinion!

Available in back bar sizes in both premixed and powder, as well as a beautiful line of retail items.

If you're not ready to jump into the mud just yet, retailing is a great way to talk to your clients and gauge their response to mud.

See you next Friday for another product of the week!

Keeping with the natural product craze, here's a product that is a quiet storm in the industry. Witch Hazel has many beneficial uses but never really gets the spotlight.

While it's a great natural astringent, it is also excellent in many other applications. You can mist your clients skin after steaming to to refresh the skin without drying. It's also awesome as a toner to help balance the ph level in skin. You can even use it as the liquid for body treatments that use mud or clay.

Here's a quick overview of the big things this little liquid helps with:

  • works as an all-natural astringent
  • works as a refreshing toner
  • soothes skin after shaving
  • soothes skin after waxing
  • used to remove makeup and oil
  • refreshes skin after exercise

Combining Services For Better Results

Is your staff running into difficulty or resistance when up-selling complimentary services to clients?

Sometimes clients may not realize the reasons you are offering them additional services, aside from what they request. They may just be thinking you are trying to boost profits - which while that is true, it's not (should not) the only reason you are. The benefits of combining services to enhance their results is what they need to be made are of.

A great example is a client coming in for a body treatment. Going into winter, detox and cellulite treatments should start to increase. A client coming in for a detoxifying body scrub should also be getting a massage. A client coming in for a massage, should be getting a body scrub with dry brushing. Combining services like these enhances the overall result including increased relaxation. Explaining to your clients how dry brushing and a using a scrub like the Desert Mineral Detox prior to a massage will soften the skin, improve relaxation and help flush toxins in addition to the massage benefits.

It's not limited to body treatments/massages, clients coming in for their regular anti-aging facial should also be coming in for microcurrent treatments regularly to enhance the anti aging effects of the facial.

You already know which of your services pair well together, you just need to carefully explain this to your clients. Having them aware that you have their best interests and results in mind is key!
