L'Oreal Professional NOW Offering Formal Balayage Training Certification

Balayage is one of the most sought-after hair coloring processes in existence today, and it is only becoming more popular with the recent trends of ombre hair color. According to L'Oreal's website:
"Balayage is a coloring technique used to create sun-kissed, natural-looking highlights. Used as an alternative to foil highlighting, it is the action in which hair color is swept or painted on to the hair to create depth and dimension.

Balayage is the in-salon color service choice among the most discerning clients – celebrities, models and fashionistas – that demand hair color to be designed exclusively for them. And Balayage hair painting isn’t just for Blondes! It is perfect for brunettes that want a subtle, sun-kissed look."
Recently, L'Oreal announced plans to formalize their Balayage training for salons across the United States, creating a full Balayage Certification Program.

According to The Colorist Magazine, the program will be broken into 4 classes, divided by levels:

  1. Balayage Foundations (2-day demonstrations with hands-on mannequin sessions)
  2. Balayage Advanced (2-day demonstrations with hands-on mannequin sessions)
  3. Balayage Creative (2-day demonstrations with hands-on mannequin sessions)
  4. Balayage Live (3-day demonstrations with hands-on mannequin sessions)
Following the completion of all 4 classes, colorists will be officially "Balayage Certified" by L'Oreal.

Will you become a Balayage Certified Colorist?

Increase Your Coloring Appointments With The Kas Halo Hair Dryer Processor

I am sure a lot of your clients are looking for beachy blonde locks for the summer. Whether they are wanting highlights or straight out going blonde, you want to make sure you have the best up to date equipment, so you'll have the time to fit in all your clients who are needing your coloring services!

Hair dryer processors are a great alternative to hood dryers that have always been used. The great thing about the Kas Halo Hair Dryer Processor, is that it will be more comfortable for your client and will speed up the processing time. I have been through the process of highlights so many times and can tell you that there is a big difference in the processing time between the hood dryers and the halo type processors.

The Kas Halo Hair Dryer Processor is a halo-shaped heat-source that uses a 360 degree rotary motion to evenly apply radiant heat to produce quicker and more even results. This processor also has an added feature of a fan for the neckline, which will increase client comfort and also has an adjustable heating zone. Quicker processing time leads to more client appointments and increased income for you!

Extend The Life Of Color Treated Hair

Keeping color treated hair from becoming dull and faded can definitely be a challenge. But, you as the colorist, can educate your clients on proper maintenance to keep their color looking fresh until their next session with you. There's a great product I have been hearing about by Goldwell®. It is the Goldwell® Dualsenses Color Lock Serum, and it can prolong color retention for up to 22 shampoos! It is used directly after coloring and is formulated with ColorChromaComplex, which instantly locks in color after the application.

Although we don't carry this item at the moment, check out some of these tips on making color last:

Shampooing - Advise your client  not to shampoo their hair for at least 24 hours after the application. (Use warm water, not hot!) This will allow the dye to fully set in each strand. Also, shampooing too often will reduce the life of the color because it strips away the natural oils that protect the dye. Every other day at most is ideal. You can also retail dry shampoo to your clients for this!

Color hair one shade darker than desired color to offset fading.

Avoid Sulfates and Sodium Chloride - It is believed by some hair experts that sulfates may strip the hair, which will turn the color dull. Your client should stick with sulfate free products and products designed for color-treated hair.

Hats! - Your clients may not know that along with protecting your skin from UV Rays, your hair color will also benefit from protection. UV Rays can fade the color of chemically-treated hair! So advise your clients that when they are in the sun for prolonged periods of time, its best to cover up!

Limit Heat Styling - Excessive heat styling can fade color treated hair. If heat styling is a must, use a cooler setting when using a blow dryer or flat iron.

When hair is shiny, it can mask a dull color. Offer a gloss treatment to your clients in between coloring sessions.

Filling your clients in on these tips will keep them coming back to you time after time for all their coloring needs!

Grey Blending - A Great New Service to Offer Your Male Clients!

Offering services that are specifically designed for men are a great way to bring in more male clients. However, there is a big difference between how men and women view hair coloring. Women are usually looking for a new look, and will make big changes sometimes, but the average guy who has never done more to their hair than cut it, might feel intimidated by having to get his hair colored. There are a lot of men today who are getting their hair professionally colored, but there's also the men who just want to cover some greys without looking like they are trying to hide it!

A service called "Grey Blending" is a quick and easy process that doesn't give full grey coverage, but rather was designed to blend greys with his own hair color for a natural look that will take years off! Its a great way to introduce men to hair coloring without making a big change. The color is normally semi or demi permanent, so it will gradually fade over three to four weeks. The service also only takes 15-20 minutes and is a great add-on for a cut!

Need some new supplies to start offering this new service? We have what you need here at Pure Spa Direct!

Update Your Look for Fall and Give Your Colorist a Visit!

Hair color is one of the greatest trends that women can enjoy playing around with. Fall is a great time of year to make a change to your color. I myself love making changes to my hair color, I'm a natural blonde, have gone brunette, and am playing around with the idea of...maybe...something a little more red! Changing your hair color with the seasons is definately a lot of fun.

  • Brunettes:
    • If you are looking to update your dark tresses, consider going warmer and darker. Darker colors can highlight the skin and eyes, so it is a great way to change your look with the changing seasons. Another look that continues to stay popular is a sleek, black color.
  • Redheads:

    • Red is definately a huge trend this fall. Warm tones such as copper and auburn will balance out paler skin. For a lighter, less extreme look, try going with a strawberry blonde color.
  • Blondes:
    • A great way to update blonde hair for the fall is adding more of a beige tone. Also, adding some low lights will tone down the summer blonde color and give you a great multidimensional look.

Whichever color change you choose, try to keep it within two shades lighter or darker than your natural color. Be sure to consult with your colorist what would work best for your skin tone and leave them to work their magic! Happy coloring!!

Product Club Foil Assistant- The Assistant that Doesn't Require a Salary!

In the world of a colorist, who does a lot of highlighting on a daily basis, you know that with each and every foil application, comes the annoying process of reaching, grabbing, sometimes tearing, and setting each foil, a minimum of 20-30 times per client. It can be a tedious and time consuming process. It is always great to have the foils pre-cut and prepped to be easily grabbed beforehand, but sometimes it doesn't always work out that way. Somehow they will still mange to stick together! Sometimes your clients may be willing to assist you with this process, by handing you the foils, while others might prefer to relax while they're paying for the service of getting their hair done..

…. Now you can kiss your your sticky foil troubles away and find a little help with the Product Club Foil Assistant. While keeping your styling station neat, the Product Club Foil Assistant can make the arduous job of a colorist (a much-needed) little-bit easier. The Product Club Foil Assistant picks-up and separates each foil, sheet by sheet. As a colorist you know this is a huge time saver.... and time is money!
