Scent or No Scent, That Is The Question

Many clients will ask what the most popular scents are at various times during the year. While it is incredibly important to have the right scent(s) to boost business and create a mood, it's also important to remember the power of unscented.

There is a good chunk of people who either are allergic or sensitive to scents, or flat out don't enjoy them for one reason or another. Do you have unscented options for your treatments? Do you have a "scent free" area for clients with severe sensitivities or who may be experiencing migraine symptoms?

Why not ask clients or send out an email poll about it? Get their thoughts on having a scent free section or if there are ever times they would prefer to have an option of scented or unscented. The worst that will happen is they have zero opinion. For those clients who DO have a preference, it will make a huge impression on them by asking....and accommodating their responses.

International Men's Day 2015

November 19th is International Men's Day, not one of the days that seems to get as much attention.

This is a perfect opportunity for you to pull in more male clients, sell more men's grooming products and set yourself apart from your competition, who may not even be aware this day exists!

Making the day all about the guys can be done in so many ways! Have some guy friendly themes, if you have televisions, put on some games, have "manly" finger foods and essential oils/candles going. Many guys still can feel uncomfortable going in for services which is why having a day where they know they're not going to be "the only guy" , can be the only chance you get for some of them.

Of course you want to feature the services you offer that they can benefit from aside from manicures and massages. Coffee infused body treatments, "grooming for success" packages that include cuts, facials, manicures and shaves are a great idea! Use this as a chance to educate guys on how easy a skin care routine can be. Have quality retail items on hand, demo them too - once they see how simple it can be, and how much the women in their life will appreciate it, they'll be hooked!

Are Your Clients Bored? Check Out Some Ideas to Keep 'Em Coming!

Even with seasonal menu changes, clients can become used to your menu options which can lead to boredom - which can lead to them checking out what your competition is offering.

Are you offering things like "treatment of the day/month"? This is a great way to get clients to try new services, even at a discounted rate. You can introduce them to the next level of service, improve their results and increase their loyalty to you. Be sure to pick something from different categories each month to expand what your clients are coming in for. Things like microcurrent, high frequency, and body wraps are always great. Even offering an add on off the month like Eco-Fin or a collagen neck treatment can be successful for clients who have been on the fence about trying something new.

Do you have staff picks displayed in your retail section? Clients like to see what the professionals recommend and use themselves. This is a great way to boost retail sales and again, introduce new products and services to clients. As you've probably seen, once you get your clients talking they are more open to suggestions.

I've seen great success in companies that offer a monthly "how to" class. Whether it be proper techniques to use at home or on how to pick products for their skin type. Be sure to have products ready to demo, samples, sample jars and for purchase.

Changing Seasons - Changing Sheets!

With the change in season speeding it's way here, have you stopped to think about your bed/table coverings? Not every one wants to start thinking about the cooler fall weather and cold winter ahead. If you think about it now you're good for at least another year, and you'll beat the rush!

You may want to start bringing in, and even transitioning, your linens to some cozy flannel ones. I know it's hot and humid in most parts of the country, the last thing anyone wants is flannel. Extra Extra! What Extras Do YOU Use To Gain Your Clients' Loyalty?

It's no secret, especially in this industry that it is the little things that are important. So much so that your client retention can depend on those little things. Offering little extras to your clients can mean the difference between them coming back to you, or seeing what your competition is doing.

Everyone wants and likes to feel special, your clients are especially. You are in a unique position to make them feel beautiful inside and out. I've mentioned before that showing your clients you care about them as a person, can be the difference between a spa hopper and a life long relationship.

It could be something as little gifts like a sample from the amazing Control Corrective line! (pick items tied into the services they come in for or retail items!), client appreciation days/specials even something as complimentary Eco-Fin treatments! Pay attention to your conversations with clients, note important events or likes on their profile or service card. The key is to make sure you look over the profile card BEFORE they come in for the appointment. Bring up whatever it is during your conversation, they will be impressed you "remembered". If they have an event or something they are excited for coming up, offer a complimentary add on, retail item (even a few sample packs or mini nail polish if you don't want to offer full size gifts) or even a coupon off their next visit.

Easily Build Client Loyalty

With new businesses in the industry seeming to open on every corner, it can feel overwhelming to set yourself apart from the competition. Establishing a great relationship with your clients so they become life-long patrons is key. It's great to have rushes during holidays, however, the life-long client is worth more in the long run than the 2 or 3 time a year client.

Always be checking out what's new in the industry as far as new products, new ingredients, trends and what client's are excited for. Being on top of these trends will keep you relevant in an ever changing industry. Also, be sure to keep an eye out on new technology, equipment, and treatments that are popping up.

Look for ways to engage your clients with loyalty programs, packages, referral incentives...the sky is the limit on this one. Look through websites to see what the fun unofficial month/day celebration is (like National Flip Flop Day!) Things like that provide an opportunity to create one day specials that are fun and enticing. Your clients will always be wondering what fun new special you'll be offering next....and tell their friends!

Finally, one of the most important keys is trust. If your clients feel that you truly care about their needs and you offer support and sound advice, they will stick with you.

Setting Yourself Apart From Your Competition

One of the main goals in any business is to be remembered for great services, experiences, staff and results. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming to seem unique or find ways to set yourself apart from your competitors. While the main thing owners/managers tend to focus on is the service menu, there are small details that can have huge results.

I just read an article in DAYSPA magazine that got me thinking of the different businesses I've been to over the years that stuck in my head, and why. I'll never forget years ago I went to a salon and they had someone going around with a refreshment cart to offer complimentary cucumber water, tea, wine and champagne and little nibbles. At that time, I'd never been to a salon that had anything other than a water cooler with paper cups. Almost 20 years later and I still remember the salon.

Offering a selection of herbal teas or something as simple as infused water may be the extra something that sets you apart for them.

Another option, rather than offering a groupon deal, discounts or coupons is to gift clients with a goodie bag of product samples from your retail line. It's a great way to introduce the products to clients and they feel appreciated when given a special gift. Take it a step further and let them choose 2 or 3 products they've been dying to try but haven't committed to purchasing yet. If you aren't retailing, it's a great time to start. You can significantly increase your profits by retailing quality lines and showing the value to your clients.

Do you offer a rewards club or member card? Giving clients a card to punch every time they receive a service leading up to a free service may be enough to get them to come in more often than if they never received any incentive. Also, have your technicians ASK clients for their card to punch. This instills a different level of confidence in your appreciation for the client. I know many times I've remembered about my loyalty card AFTER I left and it was too late.

Are you located in an area with shops, theaters or restaurants? There is a great opportunity for businesses to help each other with referral services. You could offer light appetizers from a local restaurant, offer to book a reservation for your clients while they are getting their services done or have the restaurant offer to add one of your services onto their guest's check.

Thinking outside of the box and even asking your clients for feedback on what would make their overall experience better is a great way to stay ahead of the competition and boost client retention.

Celebrate!!!! Keeping Your Clients Happy and Increasing Revenue

Keeping your clients happy is as imperative as offering quality services. Providing quality services is a must as we all know but the thing that sets decent businesses apart from the ones who are always growing is how special their clients feel.

It really doesn't take much to make people feel like you really care about them - not just their business. With a bit of creativity you can tailor ways to show your clients you are invested in their well-being. Package deals are great money saving options but don't really convey a personal caring touch that people respond to.

Some of our clients offer monthly giveaways either by raffle or by guessing the number of an item in a jar.
Others offer loyalty cards where after a set number of services they get a discount or a free add on.
Another great cost effective idea is to offer an add on treatment that will benefit the individual client based on their needs. Explain why this would be beneficial to them and offer a free demonstration or even let them experience the treatment for the first time at no charge.

Birthday or client anniversary dates are great times to show how much you care with something as simple as a personalized card signed by the staff with a coupon enclosed.

Here are a few items that our client's who cash in on caring use:

Raffle Tickets- most people I know get excited for raffles. You can pick different colored tickets for different tiered prizes and make it fun!

Glass Jar- small enough where you can fill it with items for clients to guess without making you crazy with a high quantity! Also at $2.18, extremely cost effective.

Rhinestone- a pretty way to fill a jar. A variety of colors to chose from and only $2.15 for 100 of them- cost effective.
