Add A Little Om To Your Spa

The winter can be a stressful time for many people. Seasonal effective disorder (also known as SAD) is winter depression that I'm sure you see many of your clients struggle with during this time of year. A good way to uplift their spirits can definitely be with a calm and relaxing spa atmosphere. Looking for new, unique decor to add? We have a beautiful Om Offering Bowl that can be used to set the tone of your spa. Om is a mantra that is often chanted at the beginning and end of yoga sessions. This magical word is said to be both the sound of the creation of the universe, as well as the sound of silence. Om is usually chanted to calm the mind as well as create a peaceful setting. This offering bowl is sculpted of brass, leaving it with a beautiful red-gold finish both on its interior and exterior. The natural coloring is further amplified by the brass accents with which it is decorated, depicting ornamental scroll work encircling the rim and the base of the bowl, and the beautifully sculpted Om symbols that run along the exterior of the bowl. Bring some om to your spa, and into your client's mind set with this gorgeous, decorative piece!

A Natural Luxury: Consider Cedar Wood For Your Spa!

Whether you're just getting started on your business, or if you're looking to revamp your spa's decor, I can guarantee you'll fall in love with the look of our Cedar Wood Foot Soak Tub. Why have the same type of foot tub every other spa in town has when you can stand out with this beautiful, luxurious, yet affordable wooden tub? Why cedar wood, you ask? I'll explain!

To start, cedar wood is highly resistant to rot and decay, which makes it long-lasting and great to be used as a foot tub. Next, it's highly sustainable, renewable, and even biodegradable which makes it eco-friendly. Aesthetically speaking, it's a naturally beautiful type of wood and will add a warmth to your spa unlike any other foot tub! It's natural, unique look will most certainly make your business stand out.

Aside from the cedar wood foot tub, did you know that we also carry Cedar Wood Essential Oils, as well as a Cedar Verbana Scented Candle? When used in topical form, cedar wood has anti-inflammatory effects on certain conditions such as arthritis and pain. It can also help to tighten and tone muscles, skin, and even conditions like acne according to an article I read. It can also be used as a sedative as it has a calming effect. Yet another reason to bring the natural luxury of cedar wood into your spa!

Soothing Summer Body Treatment!

As we near the end of June, I've had quite a few conversations with clients gearing up for their summer menu options. Many have asked about body treatments for skin that has been overexposed to the sun. Aside from having quality sunscreen and lip protection to retail, here is a great body mask to help calm sun scorched skin.

Sun Skin Saver Body Mask
*this mask is soothing and hydrating to help calm and nourish skin that has been overexposed to the sun

In a rubber mixing bowl, mix 3T Kaolin powder, 1 T Buttermilk Powder and 1 T of honey powder until combines. Add in 2 T of Aloe Gel and mix well. Place the bowl in a mud warmer, hot towel cabi or in another bowl filled with warm water.

Prep the client as you normally do for body treatments and apply the mask using a brush or your hands starting at the feet. Make sure the temperature of the mix is not too hot so warm that it causes more pain to the already sensitive skin!

Leave the mask on for 20 minutes before removing. Follow up with your favorite hydrating lotion like the Alchimie Forever Daily Defense Cream SPF 23 or Alchimie Forever Kantic Calming Cream !

This soothing mask will have your clients sighing with relief!

Protect Your Skin This Winter With Bee Pollen!

We tend to hear and see many random, off the wall and down right weird products and treatments across the world in this industry. One of the less weird and highly effective is bee pollen.

Bee Pollen is a natural antiseptic and anti-microbial making it excellent in treating congested skin. One of the new favorites is Nutri-Bee facial serum from Amber Products.

It takes the detoxifying power from bee pollen and gives itself a power punch by adding Ichthammol (my grandparents used to refer to ichtammol as black salve) which is ridiculously effective at drawing things out of the skin.

Not to be stopped there, Amber added in rhammus bark (aka buckthorn bark) and bee propolis to calm the skin down and aid in tissue repair.

Basically, it pulls all the gunk and junk out of the skin and calms the irritated skin down...all in one little serum.

Take a look and see how this new serum can add to your already awesome arsenal of options to offer your clients!

Catch Of The Day! Alginate Masks

Forget the fish, bring on the alginate masks! Alginate masks (also referred to as modeling masks) should be in your tool belt if you perform any type of facial or body service. Pretty bold statement? Nah, there is a reason why these things are constantly flying out of our warehouse!

Alginate masks contain marine algae which are among the ancient of living organisms...I'm talking over a billion years here! That's some serious staying power with some serious results for every skin type that walks in your door.

OK, let's talk about what makes these masks essential to have. First, a bit of educational background...The other main ingredient in alginate masks is calcium sulfate which is both a natural and chemically made salt. When you add water to marine algae combined with calcium sulfate, a gel substance forms (remember the plaster of paris projects when you were younger? same concept!) that contours to each client's facial structure as it dries. Once in the gel form, the mask holds whatever the active ingredient is (chamomile, cranberry, ginseng, etc), allowing them to slowly penetrate into the skin. Basically what takes place is as the mask dries, it absorbs surface toxins and debris from the skin while slowly allowing the active ingredients to work their magic.

Another awesome benefit of an alginate mask, is that it contains seaweeds which stimulates collagen and speeds up fat metabolism. This makes them especially effective in anti-cellulite treatments such as body wraps!

Alginate masks are great for all skin types and can be customized by adding natural additives like essential oils to target specific skin conditions. Due to the calming effect, alginate masks are popular following microdermabrasion, mysotim and ultrasound treatments.

In a nutshell, alginate masks are great for almost everyone, they are super hydrating, have a tightening effect, reduce pore size and are wonderful for calming the skin,

Most are available in a single use size for you to try on yourself. Once you see how effective they are, you can get them in the larger bulk sizes to share with your clients!

Emergency Skin Kits- Expect The Unexpected

As everyone knows, nothing always goes exactly as planned especially dealing with the public.

Every individual and their bodies will react differently to different items. No matter how skilled you are, you can never truly know if a person is going to have a reaction to something you are using on their skin. Whether they left something off of their intake form or for some reason one day their skin is extra sensitive.

Being prepared can not only quickly ease a client's discomfort but it can be the one step that saves that relationship rather than ending it. Most people understand that sometimes things happen and I know if I had a negative reaction to a product and the therapist/technician knew what to do, I'd go back to them. However if they had no idea what to do and freaked out, I would never go back and make sure to let everyone know how poorly the situation was handled.

So how can you be prepared? First you and all of your staff must always be learning and staying on top of news and trends about products and product studies. You also need to pay attention to any physical clues, the faster you can detect a possible negative reaction, the faster you can remedy it. Is the client suddenly becoming red or blotchy? Does the skin feel oddly hot or is the client experiencing undue discomfort? Being tuned into your clients skin and your clients in general is extremely important.

What to do if you notice a client beginning to have a negative reaction to a service or product you are using on them? Keeping an "emergency skin calming kit" is a great idea!

Having some soothing masks that can be mixed and applied quickly can be all that is needed for slight irritations. Here are a few examples:

Calming Mask / 8 oz. by Ayur-Medic Skincare
Calming Mask / 2 oz. by Ayur-Medic Skincare
AMBER PRODUCTS Calming Masque
Dr. Temt Azulene Gelform Mask

Some other items to consider keeping on hand to help calm skin down include:

Gel Calming Pads by NatraGel
Calming Cream / 2 oz. by Ayur-Medic Skincare
Calming Gel / 32 oz. by Amber Products
Calming Cleanse
Calming Ampoule by Rosa Graf

It's a smart investment to keep a few of these items on hand in case of emergency reactions that don't require medical attention. You'll have better peace of mind and your clients will also feel more at ease knowing you're thinking ahead for their comfort and safety!

Stay Calm with Chamomile in Your Spa

As the time comes to transition from summer into fall, for some it can definately be a stressful time. Back to school, back to work, no more relaxing beach days, etc...things can get hectic! Its a time for some much-needed calming!

Chamomile calms the mind and eases fear, anxiety, anger, worries and tension during times of physical and emotional stress. Also, brings peace and patience and enhances overall feelings of calm and relaxation.

Chamomile is one of the longest used medicinal plants. It’s been used for centuries to calm and soothe the mind, body, and soul. Diffusing roman chamomile essential oil can combat depression, insomnia, and stress because of its calming abilities. When used in aromatherapy, it is able to relax and tone the nervous system and decrease tension and anxiety.

Both Roman and German chamomile have excellent calming properties, but Roman chamomile is more effective for irritation, impatience, and has great value in treating PMS and other menstrual and menopausal problems, while German chamomile is superbly effective on the skin, not only to soothe and calm, but to heal and for tissue regeneration. Both help soothe skin conditions like acne, eczema, rashes, wounds, dermatitis, and dry, itchy skin. Chamomile oil is excellent at treating any type of inflammation, but German chamomile contains azulene, a powerful anti-inflammatory agent.  This blue crystal is not actually present in the plant, but forms in the oil and only a small quantity is needed to be effective. Roman Chamomile essential oil is very mild when used on the skin. Due to this, it is a great choice for use on sensitive or inflamed skin. The Roman chamomile essential oil has a sweet, apple-like fragrance and is very light clear blue in color, while the German chamomile oil has a sweet, straw-like fragrance, and is dark blue in color. Roman chamomile can be used in a blended massage oil, or diluted in the bath, to assist with allergies, anorexia, addiction, colic, insomnia, back pain, muscle pain, arthritis, post-natal depression and bowel disorders, whereas German chamomile can be used for asthma, measles, mumps, PMS, menopausal symptoms, as well as rheumatism.

*Both chamomiles blend well with bergamot, clary sage, lavender, geranium, jasmine, tea tree, grapefruit, rose, lemon and ylang-ylang.

Try using Chamomile in these various ways for calmer days!

Old School Cool, Part 2 - Soapstone Aromatherapy Diffusers

Welcome back to the second installment of our "Old School Cool" series! Doug previously praised the "Old School Cool" of the Traditional Ayurvedic Massage Oil Warmer. Today, let's see how cool Soapstone Diffusers are!

Soapstone Diffusers are the perfect addition to any treatment room, and adding one won't take up another plug! In this high-tech, digital age, we seem to think everything is better if it plugs in. The more I learn about aromatherapy and about the benefits our bodies and minds reap from essential oils, the more I wonder....should we be using something we plug into a wall to diffuse essential oils? Well, if you wonder the same thing, its time to go old school cool with these beautiful, hand-carved Soapstone Diffusers! Instead of having a diffuser that looks like a piece of equipment, use a diffuser that looks like a piece of art in your treatment room!

Available in varying designs, these diffusers are hand-carved in India and are made of soapstone, which is a solidified form of talc, and is rich in magnesium. These eye-catching pieces are so easy to use, simply fill the bowl with hot water, add 5-6 drops of your favorite essential oil, and light the tealight underneath! Within minutes your space will be filled with your favorite scent, and your client will be marveling at the beauty of your diffuser!
