Product Of The Week: Disposable Pillows

It may sound odd, however, these hygienic disposable pillows can save you time and money - who doesn't want that?!?

If you run a mobile business, these are game changing. No more lugging additional bolsters or using towels as make shift bolsters. Professional and sanitary, these are easy to inflate/deflate, and won't take up valuable space. Since they're reusable, your client can take them home  if they wish - they make great travel pillows!

Do clients ever ask for additional neck or head support adjustments? Do they ask more than once? Most won't even if they aren't comfortable. They love your services and you, so they suffer in silence. Having a new, clean pillow for your clients will show in a simple way, you're thinking of them.

Just like dingy towels, what do your current options for client comfort say about your business?

Steamer Issues? Stop by!

Aside from the flu, one of the most common topics buzzing right now are steamers. From an old steamer finally gave out, to one from Amazon that wasn't designed for heavy professional use couldn't handle the holiday rush.

If you've been noticing some issues or even wear and tear affecting the appearance of the steamer (clients don't want to see dirty, broken down equipment; would you?) or don't yet have a back up, you can't afford to wait any longer.

Whether you need one with ozone or aromatherapy or even a mini table top (these make great retail items as well!) for emergencies or space concerns, there are fantastic options in every price range. If you like keeping your cash flow positive, head over to the financing application!

What Are Your Towels Saying About Your Business?

There is one product that nearly every type of business in this industry all use, towels. Towels of all sizes, colors and feel.

You may not think of it often, but what are you towels saying about your business? What impression are they leaving with your clients? Are they faded or thin? Are they riddled with bleach spots? Do they tie into your theme?

If you have to think about an answer, you may want to take a look at updating.

Maybe you have been thinking of adding a little new flair, how about a different color towel? Something as simple as using a different color washcloth that compliments or contrasts your salon towels, can bring new life to your business.

Would you want to go back to a spa or salon that had dingy or rough, thin towels? Would your clients?

Waxing Emergency?

The New Year rush has died down and soon will be the Valentine's Day rush. With the potential for an increase in waxing clients before this lovers holiday, how confident are you in your wax warmers?

You've noticed the temperature becoming inconsistent or taking longer than usual to heat to the right temperature? You've been so busy with New Year's that you've been putting off upgrading? Now is the time to make this a priority. You don't want to be caught during Valentine's season cancelling appointments or turning aware clients because your warmer broke, and you don't have any back ups.

Even if you were ahead of the game and have already updated your warmers. Did you throw out the old ones, or keep for back up? There are some smaller sized warmers that make excellent backups in case of emergency. Here are a few of our waxing specialists preferred ones:

Starpil Starter Wax Warmer
Berodin Single Warmer
Cirepil Wax Warmer/Heater - The Happy Heater
The Melting Pot Professional Wax Warmer by Spilo
Depileve Intro Warmer

Don't be the place reviewed for ruining someone's Valentines Day, when it is completely preventable!

Flu And You!

The last few weeks, the majority of people I've spoken with have all had the flu. It's widespread and hitting hard.

Is your business ready to help protect staff and clients? Have extra hand sanitizer bottles placed in every room, have some for retail, keep a bottle at the front desk. Be sure to have plenty of disinfectant wipes, disinfectants, gloves and face masks if needed!

New Year, New Signatures!

While many of your clients may be coming in for the "new year, new you" passion, what are you doing new, as a business?

Has your signature treatment been your most popular this last year? If not, it may be time to reinvent your signature. Whether it be a new scent added to the space or into treatments, or an entire new color or theme, when was the last time you had something completely fresh and new to excite them?

For those looking for big drastic changes to get their clients attention at the door, how about new reception furniture, fire or water features or a relaxation room?

For more subtle transformation, how about placing diffusers around with one specific scent (or blend), adding complimentary Voesh or Eco Fin treatments for clients who purchase packages?

If you want to revive clients eyes, how about adding a splash or color (or new color), with linens? From sheets and blankets to robes and slippers - even mag lamps, your clients will notice!

SOAP And You

When I was in massage school, our teachers instilled in us the importance of keeping detailed client records or, SOAP notes. At the time, many thought of it as a way to simply to track progress and as a refresher to jog our memories. It wasn't until we actually got out into the world to practice, to really understand the impact of SOAP notes.

For those unfamiliar with the term, SOAP notes stand for the following:

While keeping detailed client notes is an excellent way of charting progress and change, it is vital in business to protect yourself. If, for some reason, a situation arose where your services were questioned (medical reasons, insurance, legal etc), having detailed accounts of each client is imperative. It is much easier and more reliable to refer to documented information than that of "let me think for a second" and try to remember. It is also important to remember to document what the client tells you, from medications to likes/dislikes - you'd be surprised how these seemingly small pieces of information can have a huge impact!

It also gives your clients the confidence that you're paying attention to them, their body and their needs. Confident clients are loyal clients!

Be Memorable!

Do your clients refer to you for one specific reason aside from, "the place I get my facials"?

Do they refer to you as "XYZ, they have this amazing Caviar Facial that is unlike any other!?

Big difference there. Do you have a signature? If you do, what sets it apart from anything they can get down the block, or next town over?

Be the place that smells like warm vanilla when you walk in, that offers a signature Cinnamon & Clove scrub in the winter, that is to die for!

Be the massage therapist who not only gives a phenomenal massage, but offers a delicious smelling butter rum hand and foot treatment during the winter!

You can have a year round signature, seasonal or whatever works best for your style - just don't forget to see what's new, and how your competition is evolving.

Body Workers: Clients With Chronic Pain

If you're a body worker, is the bread and butter of your business clients with chronic pain or injury? If so, do you offer massage add ons or a variety of techniques to choose from?

Tiered services other than hot stone and/or aromatherapy seem to be something seasoned body workers shy away from. While making your hour long service a better value than the half hour one, what other ways are you maximizing your profit potential?

For clients with chronic pain, not only can the variety keep them coming back, the value of choice and additional relief may gain their loyalty.

So what to offer? If you like to test the water before jumping in, start small. A small investment with solid returns sounds like a good place to start right? Check out Eco Fin. This all natural hydrating treatment is an alternative to paraffin. Many people with chronic pain have had, or are at least familiar with paraffin (especially clients who went through physical therapy for an injury), making it an easy conversation. The starter kit is all you need to test the waters. At $1.60 per treatment cost, if you only offered the service for $10.00, you don't need a calculator to see how profitable it is!

For those who run full speed and cannon ball in, how about cupping? Phenomenal for chronic pain, professional and Olympic athletes go for treatments regularly to improve and recover. Cupping has been shown to help release adhesions, scar tissue, relax muscles in spasm, decrease trigger point pain, lymphatic drainage, decrease tissue changes and inflammation.

Give us a call, send an email ( to reach me directly), or come find us on live chat for more ideas and ways to ease your clients pain and maximize profit potential!

Hot Oil Massage? Yes Please!

Maybe it's the weather here in NY starting to get a bit colder, all I can think of is getting a massage from a therapist who uses warm oil or lotion.  It struck me, even as a massage therapist, that my brain automatically went to thinking of therapists who warm their oil, rather than just thinking "I'm going to get a massage".

Something as simple as a bottle warmer can make the difference for your clients. You don't necessarily have to use it with every client, if you aren't a fan of working with warmed oil/lotion. Having it as an option however, may be a great investment. It may just be the tipping point for clients choosing your services or your competitor.

There are many options and styles to choose from to fit any budget!

Product Of The Week: Aromafloria Sinus Help Inhalation Beads

Happy Friday!

Now that cold and flu season has been hitting areas hard, do you have any items on hand to ease congestion?

Aromafloria Sinus Help Inhalation Beads are an excellent, effective and affordable item everyone should have at their retail counter this season. We had a bottle here in the office and I purchased one as a gift for my mother last year - amazing!  A year later, and my mother still talks about how these helped clear her head.

These powerful little beads are full of eucalyptus, peppermint and lemongrass to easy congestion and boost the stuffiest of moods. They come with a cute little pouch to fill with the beads making inhalation easy and portable.  You don't have to fill the pouch up completely as a little can go a long way, depending on the level of congestion.

Did I mention these are only $5.50 each? Have a tester bottle nearby, offer it to clients to try or try it on them during a service if they are congested! Retailing at $10.00 makes it appealing to clients as well, especially once they've had a chance to smell (and feel!) how great this is.

These make great impulse item purchases, gifts and you can easily use them as an add on "boost"!

Product Of The Week: Alaskan Glacial Mud

Happy Friday!

This week, I'd like to spotlight Raw Alaska Glacial Mineral Mud.

Mud is always in style in this industry, from facials masks to body wraps. As a massage therapist, after a few years in I decided to give offering various mud add-ons a shot. As a mobile therapist at the time, I thought I was nuts for just the thought of mobile mud! I was able to make it work for me, and my client response surprised the heck out of me! All of them wanted to try it. After the trial run, some alternated their massages with mud treatments.

Mud works.

Alaska Glacial mud works. Containing more than 60 nourishing major and trace elements to promote healthy skin cell regeneration, you may find clients requesting mud packages.

Raw Alaskan Glacial. The name says it all.
Straight from the Copper River Delta in Alaska, enriched with a special combination of certified organic and wildcrafted botanical extracts from the Pacific Northwest that are chosen for their moisturizing, skin-softening, and anti-aging and immunoprotective properties. Natural as natural gets.

Are your clients hesitant on mud treatments due to that lovely, mud smell?  You can choose vanilla lavender and lavender peppermint. The slight tingle from the peppermint feels amazing, in my opinion!

Available in back bar sizes in both premixed and powder, as well as a beautiful line of retail items.

If you're not ready to jump into the mud just yet, retailing is a great way to talk to your clients and gauge their response to mud.

See you next Friday for another product of the week!

Your Clients Are On The Go - Sell Them Things to Help!

People are always on the go these days. From family vacation to business trips, airports are rarely empty.

When a client mentions they are getting ready to leave, are currently travelling or just got back from travelling - you have a perfect transition to retail.

If they're getting ready to leave, how are they taking care of their skin while away?
If they're currently travelling, what are they using now as their go to travel plan?
If they just got back, what did they use and were they happy with the results?

Three easy approaches to offer some travel kits, along with some fun options. You can educate them on the importance of keeping up with their routines while away and help them find the best products for their skin concerns. They will be appreciative of your care, which will lead into increased retail sales.

You can opt to go with kits packaged by the manufacturers, make your own kits ahead of time to match your business, or have something like a "choose your own kit". For that kit, pick however many items you select for the from for the client to fill a travel cosmetic bag. You can even tier it with a small, medium and large bag, whatever works best for you!

Here are some of favorites of clients of ours from across the world:

Some client favorites for individual items to create your own:

You can throw whatever type of product or product option, sizes or skin condition you like!

Grab some travel cases to put everything in and start talking to clients!
