Sunscreen - Not Just for Skin

When you hear sunscreen, I'm sure you and a lot of your clients automatically associate it with protecting the skin. I came across an interesting article recently that addressed if UV rays can damage nails. The answer was quite surprising! Frequent exposure to the sun can actually have damaging effects on nails which could potentially be permanent. This in part is due to the fact that the skin in the nail bed is very sensitive and thin.

Do you have any products that can help protect your client's skin from the damaging effects of UV rays? If not, we have a great product from Orly that you can incorporate in your manicures, especially during the summer months!

Orly Sunscreen for Nails is a great UV Protection Top Coat that protects nails from UV Rays. This polish can be incorporated into your manicures, or even retailed to your clients!

Sunscreen 101

Summer is in full swing, and many of your clients will be out swimming, hiking, vacationing and enjoying the warmth outside! While everyone knows they need to protect their skin, and sunblock is a highly effective solution, are your clients educated on the different types of sunblock? We have a broad range of skin protection at Pure Spa Direct to choose from! See the different types below.

Many sunscreens work by either absorbing, reflecting, or scattering light. Some use chemicals that combine with the skin to protect it from UV rays while others use naturally occurring minerals. I'm sure you have a variety of different clients who are sensitive to chemicals and are looking for a more natural solution to protect their skin from the sun, while others are content with the more traditional, chemical based sunblocks they know and love. Either way, why not carry a variety of types to retail in your spa? You'll be protecting your clients from damaging their skin while increasing profits for your business during the summer months!

Classic Sunscreen

The first type of sunscreen I'm sure most of your clients are familiar with is classic, or chemical based sunscreen. Classic sunscreens use chemically active ingredients that are designed to absorb and dissipate UVA/UVB rays. We have a great selection to choose from!

Our Advanced Sun Resistance SPF 30 Broad Spectrum Formula from June Jacobs is a great, high end sunscreen your clients will love. Paraben and preservative free, this blend of full spectrum chemical UV protectors is specially designed to protect delicate skin from sunburn and UV damage.

Another great traditional sunscreen is our Sun Therape Moisturizer with SPF 35. It provides super absorbent hydration while helping to repair and protect skin from UVB and UVA exposure. The bonus is that it's also formulated with Pharmagel's exclusive Photosome Reconstructive Complex which can help to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your clients!

Mineral Sunscreen

The other type of sunscreen is mineral based, which uses active ingredients like Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide to scatter and reflect UVA/UVB rays. This is ideal for your clients who are prefer to use more naturally derived products on their skin.

One of our best selling mineral based sunscreen is our BurnOut 18.6% Zinc Oxide Sunblock. I love it! It's great for clients who have sensitive skin. Generally, mineral based sunscreens go on chalky or white, but this formula goes on clear. It's also biodegradable, ocean-safe, petroleum-free and paraben-free!

Another great chemical-free sunscreen we carry is Our SPF 30 Sunblock by Ayur-Medic Skincare. Derived of nano zinc oxide, linoleic acid, glycine and tocopheryl acetatet, it uses the latest nano-technology to protect the skin from premature aging caused by exposure to UV light.

The new Sun Therape Moisturizers with SPF 35 by Pharmagel is a perfect sun protection retail item at this point in the summer because they not only protect the skin from UVA and UVB exposure, but they also help repair skin that has been exposed since summer started, as well as provide super absorbent hydration to dry skin they may be experiencing now.

The Sun Therape Moisturizers with SPF 35 are formulated with Pharmagel's exclusive Photosome Reconstructive Complex™ to boost effectiveness, it helps to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Sunscreen and antioxidant ingredients provide a daily barrier that pampers skin while guarding from environmental damage. This advanced anti-aging protective body moisturizer is an ideal daily treatment because it is super absorbent and dries quickly to a silky finish.

Sun Damaged Skin---Prevention Is Key

I just read an article that referenced a study done at the University of Michigan Medical School that shows skin damage starts after just two daily exposures to a low amount of ultraviolet A1, or UVA1, light. These two lights are the ones our skin is exposed to every day and also the same that's in tanning beds.

TWO DAYS!?! It's never been a secret that certain UV rays are bad, obviously tanning beds are not a great choice either but I never realized how quickly the damage can occur. I used to hear people at the gym always proclaim they only went in the tanning bed for 10 minutes every day so they weren't concerned about skin damage...think again!!!

I know I sound like a broken record here but educating your clients is such a crucial aspect to the service you provide. Making them aware of the potential dangers and damages they (and their skin) may come across as well as providing preventative options and solutions are all key points to remember.

Now, sunscreen/sunblock isn't a kryptonite shield against UV lights however they are necessary in the battle for healthy skin.

Here are some great retail products to offer your clients as you educate them:

BurnOut 18.6% Zinc Oxide Sunblock / SPF 32 for Sensitive Skin / 3 oz
Advanced Sun Resistance SPF 30 Broad Spectrum Formula / 8.0 fl. oz. by June Jacobs Spa Collection

Sunblock SPF 30 / 32 oz. by Amber Products - this can be used as an add on to your facial services!

Summertime and Playing it safe! Read on For Sun Safe Tips and Sun Protections

Although we all know that we are supposed to protect our skin year round from sun damage, summer is a crucial time to pay more attention to keeping your skin safe. People generally spend way more time in the sun during the summer months than any other season. So to break it down for you, this is how it goes. UV rays (meaning UVB and UVA) can lead to premature aging, uneven pigmentation. age spots/skin blemishes, weakened immune system, and skin cancer. I don't know about you, but that is definitely enough for me to start thinking smarter about protecting my skin! UVB rays are the culprits for the sunburn you get and UVB rays are responsible for the long term damaging effects. So you want to use a sunblock that blocks BOTH kinds of rays.

Some safe sun tips:
  • Try to avoid or limit your time in the sun between 10am and 4pm, as that is when the sun rays are at their strongest!
  • Obviously, use sunblock every time your outdoors..even when its cloudy! About 80% of rays hit earth on cloudy days!
  • You also should choose an SPF of 15 or higher. 30 or higher is even better! SPF 15 blocks 92% of harmful rays, as SPF 30 blocks 96%
  • Apply your sunblock around 20 minutes before sun exposure, as that is how long it takes to process.
  • AVOID TANNING BEDS!!
  • Also, wearing wide brimmed hats, sunglasses, and covering up are great ways to protect yourself.
  • And please, please do not forget to REAPPLY!! Even water resistant types only protect you for 40 minutes during exposure to water. So reapply after swimming, sweating, and toweling off to ensure your still protected.
