Flower Power: Arnica

Arnica is used to produce infused oils and tinctures for use in making topical salves, balms, soaps, and other formulations for the skin and hair. The whole flowers of Mexican arnica may be infused in alcohol or oil and used to make customized skincare products, including facial washes, soap, salves, lotions, and hair and scalp conditioners.

Europeans and Native Americans have used Arnica, to soothe muscle aches, reduce inflammation, and heal wounds since the 1500s. It was commonly the first treatment applied for sprains and bruises and other
such injuries, where it helped and sped up the healing process.

Arnica is known to help athletes before and after workouts to reduce soreness and swelling, so many massage therapists use it for clients who are tender or sore.

It can be combined with other skin-loving herbs, including chamomile, meadowsweet, and white willow bark.
