Incorporate Sage into Your Services - Your Clients Will Love You for It!

I adore the smell of sage...I have sage oil on my desk as I'm writing this. I have always found it a very calming scent and apparently I'm not alone!

I recently read an article about spas and salons incorporating sage in various ways to add some new life into their menu. One spa has a soothing sage menu where clients can choose from their favorite treatments.

You can offer a sage massage by adding a few drops of sage oil to your massage oil! Add in a sage scrub to really make the treatment stand out!
You can offer a calming sage foot treatment using a sage soak and foot masque! Pair it with some sage green pedicure slippers, toe separators and sage polish! (be sure to check all the polishes since the names may be deceiving!)

If you want to go all out, have a room dedicated to your sage treatment with sheets and blankets!

Rejuvenation, Naturally: Full Body Spa Therapies

As our body's largest organ, the skin plays a critical role to health, aging, looks. So many clients focus their time and energy on keeping the skin on their faces healthy, revitalized, and rejuvenated...but what about the skin on their body? Body skin ages at essentially the same rate as the skin on the face. Why not focus some of your clients' attention on rejuvenating this skin as well?

Natural Body Therapies are not only good for the skin, but they are excellent for relaxation and mindful wellness, as well.

Body Brush Exfoliation
Dry skin brushing is a great way to exfoliate, improve circulation, combat cellulite, and more. Dry brushing is a great treatment to offer when the seasons are transitioning, since the skin is sensitive to environmental changes. Dry brushing is performed with your choice of a number of tools: loofahs, sisal, "paint" brushes, body brushes, exfoliating gloves, and more.
  • Exfoliates dead skin cells
  • Improves circulation by stimulating top layers of skin
  • Helps boost immune system
  • Aids in lymphatic drainage
  • Excellent anti-cellulite treatment
  • Helps rid the body of toxins
  • Can help even muscle tone and redistribute fat deposits
Salt Scrub Exfoliation
Exfoliating with a salt scrub stimulates the skin, cleanses the pores, and improves the texture of dull, tired skin. Salt also has antiseptic properties, so a good scrub may kill and remove infection-causing bacteria from the surface of the skin.
  • Exfoliates dead skin cells
  • Improves circulation by stimulating top layers of skin
  • Excellent anti-cellulite treatment
  • Helps rid the body of toxins
  • Promotes healthy cell regeneration
  • Nourishes the skin
  • Promotes relaxation
Herbal Wraps
Using a natural, herbal solution in combination with compression wraps is a concept that has been around for thousands of years. Body wraps are often used for Moisturizing, Detoxifying, Slimming, or Cellulite Reduction.
  • Hydrates and nourishes the skin
  • Draws toxins and impurities from the body
  • Improves circulation and can reduce pain and inflammation
  • Exfoliates and tones skin
  • Improves elasticity and healthy skin cell regeneration

Young Faces Are Trending!

I read an article last week touting that a youthful face is more important than a youthful body. The headline drew my attention, it was worth the read!

A national study was conducted by a research company in the industry, on women ages 21-65. A startling 60% of the women said that having a younger looking face was more important to them than a younger looking body. 60%!!!

What does that mean for you? Are you asking this question to your clients? If not, based off this article, I would start! Depending on the answers you uncover, you may find yourself tweaking your menu options!

I don't know many spas or salons that aren't currently offering anti-aging treatments. It may however be time to look at exactly what you are offering compared to what's most important to your client base.

Are you offering more ant-aging body treatments and your client's are looking for facials? Or vice versa?

Are your client's growing bored of the anti-aging treatments you are offering?

One of the hottest anti-aging facial treatment packages combines a deep cleaning with a skin scrubber, applying the aqua lift ampoule for the extreme lifting effect followed by a microcurrent session---the ultimate in non-surgical face lifts!

Don't forget the Advanced Anti-Aging Mask which is loaded with proven anti-aging components like hyaluronic acid, Coenzyme Q10 and of course collagen.

For those clients who are looking for anti aging body treatments, take a look at the Grape Herbal body mask and the Hydro Peptide Body Serum.  Grapes have excellent anti aging effects and the serum is full of hyaluronic acid, peptides and lipoic acid, all excellent at decreasing age lines.

Asking your clients what is important to them will give you valuable information on how to better assist them and their needs!

3 Ways to Stand Out in a Crowded Spa Market

The Spa Industry in the United States is growing by leaps and bounds. With over 20,000 locations, 164 million appointments, and $14.7 billion in revenue in 2013 (according to ISPA), there should only be one question in every spa owner's mind: How do I set myself apart from the competition?

Now, I am not saying this is going to be an easy task. It is more than likely that there will always be someone out there who is doing the same things you are, just as well as you. Or the guy on the corner who manages to undercut your pricing each and every time you turn around. Does that mean it is impossible? Certainly not! Follow some of the tips below, and cut out your own little piece of this exploding industry!

1. Use quality products that drive results.

By the way, when I recommend using quality products, I don't necessarily mean "use EXPENSIVE products." For example, we offer the June Jacobs Skin Care line - which is amazingly results driven, high-end, and offers a phenomenal retail line to go along with it. However, the per treatment cost for the June Jacobs masques are some of the lowest we offer! Why wouldn't you want to offer your clients incredible results, save your business some money, and open a fantastic new avenue for revenue for your business, all by choosing one of the top skin care lines in the world?

2. Find your niche, and stick to it.

There will always be someone around the corner who is offering a wider service menu than you. Rather than trying to keep up with the Jones', figure out what you are most passionate about providing. If removing unwanted hair is your thing, be a wax bar! If you love everything skin, focus on facial and body treatments. If you are passionate about it, you will infuse your clients with passion and excitement, and they will keep coming back for more!

3. Focus on your business culture, and market that culture.

Half the fun of visiting a spa is the atmosphere. A huge part of the atmosphere is the culture within your business. When you and your employees are fully immersed in your culture, you will all emanate the passion that you have built your business around. Your clients will be able to feel the environment and atmosphere you are building, and if they connect with it, they will be your clients for life. Focus on what you and your team are passionate about, and your clients will be passionate about your business in return.

Pamper Your Clients with a Warm Honey Manicure!

I love seeing different and unique menu options in spas and salons. The staples obviously are great but having a few different options that clients won't expect is a great way to keep them interested - and telling their friends.

Here is one I came across while reading something recently that would be great going into the winter months. It's excellent for dry and overworked hands!

Warm Honey Manicure (treatment takes about 45 minutes)
*Prepare the treatment prior to the client's arrival*

Soak
In a manicure bowl, stir together 1/2 teaspoon of Honey Powder with 1 cup of warm water and 4 drops of tangerine essential oil.

Scrub
In a rubber mixing bowl, combine 2 teaspoons of Organic Sucanat Sugar, 1/4 teaspoon Clove Powder and 1/4 teaspoon Ginger Root Powder. Add in 2 teaspoons Organic Sunflower Carrier Oil and 4 drops tangerine essential oil. Mix well and place into a mud warmer or hot towel cabinet.

Masque
Mix together 2 tablespoons White Clay Powder, 1 teaspoon Honey Powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of Clove Powder. Add in 2 teaspoons of warm water and 4 drops of tangerine essential oil. Mix well and place into a mud warmer or hot towel cabinet.

Moisturizer-
In a rubber mixing bowl, combine 1 teaspoon whipped shea butter and 3 drops tangerine essential oil. Mix well and place into a mud warmer or hot towel cabinet.

After cleansing the hands, allow clients to soak for 2-5 minutes. Apply the scrub to one hand and arm up to the elbow. Pay extra attention to the elbows and palms while massaging the scrub into the skin. Remove excess scrub with warm damp towels and repeat on the other arm.

Apply the masque to the hands and arms up to the elbow. Place the clients hands in a liner and into electric mitts and leave on for 5-7 minutes. Remove the mitts, cut the tips of the liner off so you can prep the nails while having the masque on the client to enhance the softening! Once you've prepped the nails, remove the liners and any excess masque. Massage the moisturizer into the skin and finish the nails as you normally would.

Make the experience extra special by offering honey flavored treats and herbal teas!

Pedi-Liners

These liners are pretty deep and wide. They do say "universal size" but if we put Shaq's size 22 feet in there I don't think that would work out. He probably has a pedicurist on staff anyway! I hear these liners even fit the Footsie Baths... why? I have no idea... I'm just a shipping guy! See our great Universal Pedi Liners / 100 Count HERE!

The Evolution of Highlights

When highlighting made its first big debut it the Hair Industry, there was only one method available. The cap method of applying highlights involves the use of a special perforated cap that is placed over the hair. Strands of hair (the amount depends on how much highlighting is desired by the client) are pulled through the perforations with the use of a knitting needle.  This method works well for short hair (we all remember the 90's trend with the frosted tips!). This method can be hard to control the placement of the highlights and any bleeding spots, it also can be painful for the client having their long hair pulled through the cap.

Luckily we've come a long way since highlighting was first introduced in to the beauty industry. There are plenty of different techniques to give clients exactly what they are looking to achieve.

Highlights with Foil
This method has been around for about 25 years. It is successful, accurate, and a preference for many stylists due to the control they have with this technique. Foils are used to give fine, natural looking highlights placed very close to the scalp. This technique can also be used to give the "chunky" effect as well.

Balayage/Free Hand Painting
Balayage is a French colouring technique that was developed in the 1970s. It’s a technique where the colour is applied by hand rather than using the traditional foiling. Balayage can be used in even the shortest pixie crop however the best results is in hair below the shoulders. The great thing about balayage is so many different effects from soft, natural highlights to something strong and punky can be achieved. It's also low maintenance which is a big key point for many clients.

Ombre
Ombre is a technique that can be done with foils or free handed. Hair is painted with bleach from the mid-shaft to the ends, with the densest area at the bottom of the hair shaft.
Done haphazardly, the effect can create a stark, unappealing contrast. However done correctly it is a low maintenance hair style that is up and trending!

Slicing
Slices are when large sections of the hair are highlighted which results in a more dramatic end result. Its great for a client that is interested in chunky highlights and it s great technique to give a client added texture and depth. Paneling is always done with foils! Never free-handed!

Tipping
Tipping is a technique where the stylist lightens just the tip of the hair. It is always done freehanded. Clients like this look because it is quick, painless, natural, and it grows out!

Baby lights
The newest highlighting trend! Think of a child's hair color, how it has all those beautiful different natural colors, as you may have guessed parents like to match their children's hair just how they like to dress in matching outfits. Finally a new technique arrived where the stylist can give the client what they desire. Baby lights! Baby lights are very delicate highlights and low lights. The hair is separated into tiny minute sections and hair colour and bleach is applied to give the client the dimension in their hair they desire while still looking natural. The drawback to this technique is although is sounds fairly simple it is very time consuming and in result costs a pretty penny.

What are your favorite highlighting methods to perform?

The Benefits of Pumpkin in your Beauty Regiment

Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Oreos, it's no news to anyone that when Fall is in the air, pumpkin is in the kitchen. But It's not just in the kitchen that Pumpkin is a big hit, it's widely used in the beauty industry. With properties such as vitamin E, zinc, alpha and beta-carotene, fiber, magnesium, and potassium, it's no wonder why pumpkin is making it's way onto service menus all over the beauty industry!

The Pumpkin has many great benefits, including Vitamin E  to help fight acne; Zinc which is fantastic for managing hormone levels and oils and it's vitamin content promotes the production of collagen. Protect Your Skin This Winter With Bee Pollen!

We tend to hear and see many random, off the wall and down right weird products and treatments across the world in this industry. One of the less weird and highly effective is bee pollen.

Bee Pollen is a natural antiseptic and anti-microbial making it excellent in treating congested skin. One of the new favorites is Nutri-Bee facial serum from Amber Products.

It takes the detoxifying power from bee pollen and gives itself a power punch by adding Ichthammol (my grandparents used to refer to ichtammol as black salve) which is ridiculously effective at drawing things out of the skin.

Not to be stopped there, Amber added in rhammus bark (aka buckthorn bark) and bee propolis to calm the skin down and aid in tissue repair.

Basically, it pulls all the gunk and junk out of the skin and calms the irritated skin down...all in one little serum.

Take a look and see how this new serum can add to your already awesome arsenal of options to offer your clients!

A Cut for a Cause... High End NY Stylist Mark Bustos Gives Back with Hair Cuts for the Homeless!

Mark Bustos is a hairstylist that works in the high end salon "Three Squares Studio" in Chelsea, NY. The price for his services range from $150-$800 depending on which services/treatments the client receives.

New York, New York, they say if you can make it here you can make it anywhere. But for those down on their luck, it can be a ruthless city. So when a local does something purely out of the kindness of their hearts, it raises awareness.

Mark Bustos is using his role in the beauty industry to give back, whenever he can he goes out into the streets of New York to give free hair cuts to homeless men and women. He approaches each individual with the same way, telling them "I'd like to do something nice for you today."

Bustos got the idea after visiting family members in the Phillipines in 2012. During his visit he hosted an event where he gave free haircuts to under privileged children. "It made such a strong positive impact on me that I decided to bring it back home to NYC." says Bustos

Since then Bustos estimates to have cut over 50 homeless men and women's hair-and not just in New York, but also Costa Rica, Jamaica, and Los Angeles.  Bustos says he tries to cut people hair in visible places, to try to inspire people to use their own professions to give back to those who are less fortunate.

Bustos hopes that the haircuts give his homeless clients the inspiration to turn their lives around.
