Wedding Day Skin Concerns

The unofficial wedding season has begun! The end of spring marks the start of the busy season for weddings.
The gorgeous weather, the abundance of pristine locations, sun and smile filled wedding photos...so many reasons why this time of year is always trendy for weddings.

Every bride wants to look like a princess on her wedding day, from her carefully chosen dress to her skillfully crafted hair. Many brides seek out salons expertise when it comes to their hair and make up, you are also in a prime position to help prepare their skin BEFORE the big day arrives. The last thing any bride wants is a breakout, redness or any other skin concern for their wedding...to be captured forever in professional pictures.

With the warm weather (especially depending on where you live), humidity can sneak up and cause breakouts, irritation and other issues that can be devastating to a bride to be.

Here are some tips clients should keep in mind with the heat and humidity popping up:

Sunscreen Sunscreen Sunscreen! When was the last time you saw a sunburned bride in a bridal magazine or store poster? Prevention is key! Aside from burning, the sun can make the skin look dry, tired or dull. Be sure to recommend sunscreen to all of your clients, all year round. The sun doesn't take a break in the winter!

Make sure in between treatments, your clients aren't using harsh exfoliating products or face wash that can strip the skin of essential water and oils. Some great options to recommend include the Pore Purifying Facial Bath by June Jacobs and the Exfoliating Scrub by June Jacobs

Ask them how often they are cleaning and buying new make up brushes. Many women may not realize how often they should clean or throw out their brushes! Retailing cosmetic brush cleaners as well as a variety of make up brushes will keep everyone happy!

Facial oil and serums Are the only time the client takes advantage of these amazing tools when theycome in for a facial? Explaining the importance and benefits of facial oils will instill a deeper confidence in the client but will boost retail sales! The Pure Sea Buckthorn Oil is a favorite around here!
Finally, the no brainer when it comes to all around health including the skin...WATER! By now most of your clients should know why and how much water they should be drinking daily. However, it never hurts to check in and remind them on the importance in relation to their skin!

Give your soon to be brides the knowledge, products and confidence they need to ensure the have the best possible skin for the one of the most important days of their lives!

Beautiful with Coconut Oil - 15 Uses for Coconut Oil in Your Spa!

We all know coconut oil is one of the most beloved and versatile carrier oils available, and is becoming an increasingly popular ingredient for skin care products. But why do we love coconut oil so much? Fall in love with coconut oil all over again reading these 15 uses for this nectar of the earth:

15 Uses for Coconut Oil in Your Spa
1. Cuticle Oil — Softens cuticles while soothing hangnails. Instead of expensive cuticle oil blends, apply coconut oil after your manicures.
2. Eye Makeup Remover — Use it to remove makeup, even waterproof mascara. Rather than using chemical-laden removers on your clients, try rubbing their lashes with a bit of coconut oil!
3. Deep Conditioner – Amazing conditioning treatment. Offer your clients a pre-shampoo hair repair mask prior to their cut/style.
4. Sunscreen (SPF) — This might be hard to believe, but coconut oil has an SPF of 4-6. Due to its antioxidant and moisturizing properties, coconut oil protects the skin when exposed to UV rays. Offer your clients protection products boasting coconut oil as an ingredient.
5. Body Scrub — Take your body scrubs to the next level by whipping up personalized body scrubs - coconut oil, mixed with salt or sugar, scented with essential oils....perfect!
6. Lip balm — Hydrating on dry or cracked lips. Add the finishing touch to your facials by moisturizing your clients' lips, too!
7. Foot/Heel softener — Apply to feet during a pedicure, wrap in plastic wrap and apply heat. Softer skin, happy client!
8. Facial Cleanser — Try going all-natural by cleansing with oil. Coconut oil is a favorite for this method.
9. Body Butter –  Give your body scrub clients the perfect finishing touch by whipping coconut oil into a butter. Use complementary essential oils to perfectly scent it, too!
10. Aftershave — Men can use coconut oil on their face after shaving to soothe and calm the skin. Also, incredible on legs and the bikini area.
11. Massage Oil — Coconut Oil has a terrific glide to it. Warm some coconut oil until it is liquid and give your client the relaxing massage they have been looking forward to!
12. Elbows — Even if your clients come in for a facial, give them a (moisture) boost for their elbows, too!
13. Stretch Mark Oil — For all your clients who are mommies or mommies-to-be, keep some coconut oil on hand to apply to any stretch marks they have. Keep some more on hand to sell to them to use at home, too!
14. Fades Age Spots  Apply to clients' age spots, and instruct them on continuing treatment at home to see the best results!
15. Hair Dye Assistance — Coconut oil makes an excellent barrier to protect the skin from dripping dye during the coloring process.

Well there you have it, some of my favorite used for this amazing Oil. What is your favorite use for it?

Facial sheet masks are becoming increasingly popular, and are very easy and convenient to use. A facial sheet mask is one of the quickest ways to restore radiance to dull, tired skin! Another great perk of these sheet masks is that they leave no mess to clean up and just have to be custom trimmed to accommodate the client. How to use:
  • The mask is designed to be custom trimmed to accommodate all clients.
  • Set the facial steamer or prepare hot towel cabi with towels.
  • Pre-moisten the face using your fingertips.
  • Apply the mask and lightly press into place.
  • Cover the area with a warm towel and apply light pressure to saturate the mask or hold the mask into place using steam until the mask is thoroughly saturated.

  • The mask will turn into a gel-like substance that can be removed easily.

Xtreme 15 Airfx: Promoting Self-Love and Confidence, One Spray Tan at a Time

Sunless Tanning and Airbrush Artist Mark Powell of Xtreme 15 Tanning provides more than just beautiful tans. He provides inspiration, support, and trust to each and every one of his clients. I once saw a description of a beauty industry career that said, "I cosmetically and psychologically transform self images and destinies of fellow human beings. What do YOU do?" Mark Powell embodies this description more than words can describe.

Xtreme 15 Promotional Model Alicia Maria shows just how beautiful strong is.

Mark Powell is the owner and artist behind the amazing airbrush work done at Xtreme 15, located in Harrisonburg, VA. Yes, Mark is a very talented artist, but his love and passion for his work goes so much deeper than helping clients look good. He wants his clients to FEEL good in their own skin, and often goes out of his way to listen and support his clients. This is what sets Xtreme 15 apart - their ultimate message is SELF-LOVE and CONFIDENCE (real, true, inner confidence - not artificial confidence that comes from wearing too much makeup and clothes that society deems "hip" or "sexy" or "cool").

Located in close proximity to James Madison University, Xtreme 15 boasts affordable sunless tans, as well as a wide variety of other airbrush art, including temporary tattoos, face painting, body art, and more. Mark has over 25 years of experience in airbrushing, and his superb airbrushing talent is evident in every piece of art he creates - be it tanning, airbrush tattooing, makeup effects, or body art.

Mark Powell's "Black Widow" Makeup FX
Mark and Alicia Hesse (Xtreme 15's Digital Media Producer) are working hard to get Xtreme 15's name out there. They are aggressively tapping in to the powers of social media, and manage a very popular Facebook page (Xtreme 15 Tanning), but challenges still exist. Many people in the Harrisonburg, VA area, JMU students included, don't even realize they have an amazing opportunity to look their best (while not compromising the health of their skin) right in their backyard! With an artist as versatile and talented as Mark Powell, clients should be knocking down his doors!

Along with his passion for his art, Mark Powell is also passionate about community, and is available to participate in fundraising events. He has proudly participated in events involving James Madison University, Eastern Mennonite University, Blue Ridge Community College, as well as numerous local high schools and organizations.

See more about Mark, Alicia, and Xtreme 15 on the Xtreme 15 Facebook page, and if you are in the area (or up for a road trip!), go see what all the hype is about! You won't be disappointed!

Snag More Clients by Reducing Hair Snags...Keys to Hydrated Hair

Almost every commercial I see on television for hair products boasts it's hydrating abilities in some way. Usually accompanied by random splashes of water, a woman with long wet hair whipping it about or the obligatory waterfall. Usually rather than wanting to buy the product I long for a tropical vacation or a glass of water.

Dehydrated hair is a common concern among, well, everyone. No one wants dry, limp or frizzy hair. We all want to be like the woman in the commercials with long luminous locks.

Prevention is always key, pretty much with everything in life. Dehydrated hair can be caused by pollution (smoke, chemicals etc), products (harsh shampoos/conditioners), and chemical treatments (coloring). Anything that strips the hair of the outer protective layer will result in dry weak hair.

What to do?

Offer client's hydrating hair treatments, hair oils, making sure they only use quality shampoo/conditioners  and styling products that will not strip their hair.

Pushing Back The Hands Of Time With Skin Tightening Services

Almost every woman I know at some point (usually close to or shortly after their 30th birthday), has looked in the mirror, pulled their cheeks back towards their ears, and let it drop....repeatedly. This seems to happen more frequently as each year passes. We try to see how much (never how little) our skin is sagging, changing and/or showing the inevitable signs of aging.

Anti-aging treatments are the most popular and sought after services in women ages 35-55. That is a whole lot of people that should be coming in to see you regularly!

What types of services are you offering aside from anti-aging masks to address skin tightening concerns?

There are many incredible treatment options that have been found effective for skin tightening, here is a short list:

  • LED Therapy (aka light therapy)- the low levels of light energy help stimulate collagen production resulting in a skin tightening effect over time.
  • Microcurrent - the low level electrotherapy increases circulation, tones the muscles in the skin, and helps stimulate the body processes that aid in repair and rejuvenation.
  • Micro needling- tiny needles puncture the skin which release toxins, triggers collagen production which can aid in skin firming/tightening. You can read more about the process of micro needling here.
  • Ultrasound - ultrasound waves can heat up tissues to 104–113° F which is the target range for inducing collagen production.

It is important you advise your clients that in order to be effective, these treatments need to be done regularly. Offering a trial treatment to alleviate any fear is a great way to let clients experience new treatments. Take this opportunity to educate them on how these work, the benefits/results they will see over time and you will be able to offer them amazing package deals!

Size Does Matter...Pore Size That Is

In a recent article on Skin Inc, there was an article about a study done by L'OrĂ©al Paris where they found 45% of the women polled were concerned with pore size. A whopping 28% were more concerned with pore size than wrinkles!  Apparently this is such a wide spread and common concern, dermatologists have been calling it "porexia" (clever)

Are you advising clients on the best way for their skin type to be cleansing, exfoliating, toning and moisturizing? Many people may think they only need to wash and moisturize to keep their pores clean. While this is better than nothing, all 4 steps are vital to keeping pores clean and the skin looking fresh and healthy.

While pore size is mainly genetic, oil, dirt and dead skin cells can all clog them. When pores get clogged they become inflamed, enlarged and may result in breakouts.

Consider some of these products to help customize treatments for these "Porexics":

Offering pore purifying treatments as well as retailing quality products for at home use are key to successfully keeping those little guys clear.

Give Me A Head With Hair...Long Beautiful Hair....

I may be dating myself with that "Hair" reference but it seemed fitting today.

Hair loss is a common and embarrassing condition suffered by both men and women. The causes of hair loss range from hormonal factors or medical conditions to medications and stress. One thing is for sure, clients suffering from hair loss will go to great lengths to hide the loss, and search out new treatment options.

This is where you, our savvy esthetician, comes in! You not only can offer them treatments to make them feel good about themselves again, but you can offer different treatment options from your competition!

One amazing piece of equipment to add to your arsenal is the LED Hair Growth Treatment by Meishida. Non-invasive treatments are always the first choice clients look for when researching treatments. This device uses LED technology to stimulate hair growth by activating circulation. The result is a jump-start for the hair follicles, so they begin to grow again.

This can work great as a stand-alone treatment or as an add on to the services you currently offer. Clients will see the best results over time, so offering a hair renewal package will be beneficial for both of you!
The device is super simple to use and is portable so you can take it from room to room and client to client!

Having new and exciting treatment options to offer your clients will keep them interested, coming back more often and telling all of their friends about you!

3 Steps to Successfully Increasing Gift Certificate Sales

Do you want to increase your salon traffic as well as cash flow? Are your gift certificate sales mediocre, at best?

Gift certificate sales can give your salon or spa a huge boost, while getting new (and old!) clients through the door. But how easy is it to purchase a gift certificate from your business? How can you sell more without tapping out your resources?

#1: Set Gift Certificate Sales Goals - and Stick to Them!
Do you have a specific plan for your employees to sell gift certificates, and do you hold them accountable to their sales goals? If you answered no, this is definitely where you want to start. If you are looking to gift certificate sales to be a player in your salon's revenue, you have to have a plan!

Start by reviewing your gift certificate sales for the last year, and identify how many sales were made per month. You should see a fairly regular pattern of increased sales during holiday months, such as Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Mother's Day. Once you have identified your baseline, you want to set your monthly goals for this year. Be sure to keep your goals attainable!

#2: Plan Your Gift Certificate Sales for the Year
Next, you want to split your monthly goals into monthly goals for each individual employee. Holding your employees accountable for meeting their sales goals will help motivate them to suggest gift certificates to customers. You can even hold employee contests to see who can sell the most gift certificates or the highest valued gift certificate to encourage their sales even further!

Another idea is to plan monthly/quarterly events or specials for your gift certificate sales. You can do giveaways (for every $10 worth of gift certificates a client purchases, their name is entered into a drawing for a basket or goodies, free services, etc. - whatever you want the prize to be), plan special events, or offer special promotions (such as buy 1 gift certificate, get 25% off the second) to help boost gift certificate sales.

Planning your specials/promotions/events for the whole year holds you and your staff accountable to following through on these ideas, as well as gives you the opportunity to schedule these special events in advance. Encourage your employees to participate in planning and carrying out the plans for these events!

#3: Extend Your Gift Certificate Sales Online
Your online presence is a great place to offer your gift certificates. If you are unable to sell gift certificates directly through your website, companies such as SpaBoom work with spas and salons to create an instant gift card program through their website. Instant gift cards are fast, convenient, and you will often see a spike in last-minute gifts purchased - even when your business is closed!

Always be sure to monitor your online presence. Make sure you claim your business information on websites such as Yelp, as this will increase your trustworthiness in the eyes of a browsing client. Provide descriptions and location details wherever you can, and make sure your website is functional, appealing, and simple to use!

By focusing on these steps, you can easily grow your revenue from gift certificate sales! Only part left is choosing the cutest gift certificate for your company! Check out Pure Spa Direct's gift certificate selection here: http://www.purespadirect.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=gift+certificate

Good luck!

Dry Versus Dehydrated Skin

Dry or dehydrated skin....aren't they the same? While they are similar and sometimes overlap, they are different with different causes and treatments.

Dry skin is caused from a lack of oil production. The causes can be genetic (some people are simply predisposed to have dry skin), powdery makeup (absorbs the oil in the skin)or more commonly, aging skin. Oil production slows down as we age resulting in dryer skin. A common misconception when it comes to dry or oily skin, is that no oil at all is healthiest. There should be a light layer of oil on the skin (the hydrolipid film) that also contains moisture from the air and perspiration. Another common misconception is that an oily t-zone means you have oily skin. The t-zone actually may just be producing more oil than other areas of the skin, which is healthy. This usually results in clients unnecessarily using harsh cleaners or scrubs that dry up the t-zone and strip the other areas, causing dry skin.

The symptoms of dry skin include a lack of the hydrolipid film, skin that is dull, tight and showing signs of premature aging.

Dehydrated skin on the other hand is caused from a lack of water in the skin. There are two different types of skin dehydration basically relating to how deep it goes. Epidermal dehydration affects the upper layer of the skin, usually presenting with small lines that form when the skin is manipulated, scales may also be present. Dermal dehydration penetrates deeper, resulting in deeper more visible wrinkles and/or sagging skin.

Dehydrated skin can be caused by a variety of factors, some of which we can control. Common causes include smoking, medications, poor diet, illness (rosacea is a common cause of epidermal dehydration), seasonal changes and sun damage. A common misconception with dehydrated skin is the "cure" is to simply drink more water. While water is vital to healthy skin, this alone will not prevent skin dehydration or fix it if it is already present.

Here are some of the most common treatment options for dry and dehydrated skin:

Oil Infusions
This option is effective in helping correct epidermal dryness. A great way to offer this service is to start with a gentle cleansing, toning and exfoliation followed with a noncomedogenic oil. Once the oil is applied to the skin, have the client sit with steam for 10-15 minutes to allow the heat and moisture from the steam to aid the oil absorption.
Here are some oils your clients will love:

Red Light Therapy
Red light therapy has been used to increase the skin's oil production and perspiration, enhancing the hydrolipid film, making it a great treatment for dry and dehydrated skin.
Here are some effective units to introduce red light therapy into your service menu

Handheld Mini LED Light Therapy with Red, Blue and Yellow Photons by SCF
Jantine Infrared Skin Care Lamp with Floor Stand by HANS Equipment
Paragon Microcurrent-Red Light Therapy
Meishida Multi Wave LED Light Therapy System

Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is one of the most effective ingredients for skin hydration. It binds over 10,000 times its own weight in water! It doesn't get much better than that!

Making sure your staff are speaking with your clients about their habits and performing a skin analysis will help ensure they provide the best possible treatment options for each client.

You know the saying, knowledge is power!

Modern Wellness Approaches For Any Business

Visiting the spa is no longer only an indulgence,
but is often seen necessary for health benefits.
Wellness. We hear this word everywhere these days. The world is finally focusing on being healthy inside and out, from the foods we eat to the skin care products we choose.

Spas and salons are in a prime position to capitalize on wellness services no matter what they regularly offer.Years ago, people went to the spas once or twice a year to pamper themselves or to celebrate or commemorate a special occasion. Now, spa goers understand not only the stress relief benefits, but also the specific health conditions that spas can assist them with. This results in more frequent visits and visiting for more than one concern. This alone should be the reason you offer packages, specifically the "choose-your-own adventure" type of package -  give clients options to address their specific concerns! Options make clients feel in control and that you truly care about what is important to them.

I just read an article that had tips for businesses to vamp up their wellness offerings. One of the ideas that stuck out most was highlighting a different treatment genre each month. By genre the author was referring to trying a new piece of equipment, theme or type of treatment.

For equipment, try offering something new that you aren't currently offering. A safe way to be sure there is some interest is to poll your current clients. Ask them if there are services they would are receiving elsewhere, are wanting to try, or are curious about. Once you bring it in, offer a special introductory rate for the first month, create a new package based around it, including other services that complement it.

For themes, if you have multiple treatment rooms, pick one as your destination or theme room. You can change the decor of this room monthly, quarterly or whatever works for you. For example, during winter months you may want to have an exotic island theme with warm pictures on the walls, bright table linens, even pick relaxing tropical music to play in the room. Offer tropical treatments to be done in this room such as a coconut massage or Desert Mineral Detox Body Scrub! In summer months offer a refreshing cucumber facial or a cooling pain relief massage.

You could even pick a different type of service to focus on each month or specific ingredient. The key is to keep changing it up, make it exciting and enticing. Your clients will always have something new to look forward to and you create an opportunity to introduce them to everything you have to offer.

Finally, take a look at your current retail area. Is it full of individual products from skin care lines, some candles or gift type items? Why not make up some bundles? You could pair a facial tanner, detox scrub and a luxurious hydrating anti-aging lotion for a feel good at home glow bundle. You could bundle a candle with a pedicure kit and polish. Not to sound repetitive but, creativity is key. Think of bundles you or your friends would like, ask your clients what they would like. Not only does asking your clients give you valuable information but it makes them feel like you care.

The owners and manager I've spoken to all seem to agree that keeping things fresh, exciting and checking in with their clients often is a vital part of their success. I've heard time and time again, ask yourself if you would be excited to go to your business...how often and why? What would make you want to go more or spend more?
