ISPA reports that in 2012, the US Spa industry saw a 4.5% increase in revenue over the previous year, something that translates to a total revenue in the tune of $13.4 billion this year. That is great news for every spa and salon owner out there!

Add New Customers with Positive Local Search Reviews - Contests Can Help You!

I had my hair cut at my usual salon a few days ago and chatted with the owner while he cut my hair.  He was telling me about a contest they were having that offered a year of free haircuts as the prize.  He sparked my interest.  He went on to tell me the details... it was simple... for every positive review a client leaves for the salon on an internet review site, they would add one entry into the fish bowl for the drawing.  They had a form to bring back to let the salon know the sites you left reviews on and the display name you used for that site. Kind of a pain in the butt to do, but for a year's free hair cuts, sure, why not!

Simple enough and he said after just one week in to the contest, the results were already impressive.  They had already generated a number of new positive reviews from their customers! If you were not aware, 5 Star reviews on sites like Yelp are gold for any business.  The cost of 12 free hair cuts is nominal compared to the value of the boat load of positive reviews the contest will generate.

Even though the contest is offering the possibility of a reward for a good reviews, the salon is not asking anyone to make anything up or lie... so as far as I can see, it is moral, ethical, fun and a great idea! Remember, the more positive reviews you have, the less a negative review will hurt your review average!

It's All About The Money! - Retailing in Your Spa/Salon

Billions of dollars are spent on beauty and self-care products every year! There is huge income potential if you are offering retail items. Depending on the type of spa or salon, retail should account for 30 to 50% of your net profit.

You don't necessarily need to be a salesperson to retail products in your spa - you really just need to be able make honest recommendations. Customers for Life: Catering to Those Affected by Disabilities

Recently, I came across an astounding statistic:  According to the ADA, more than 50 million Americans are affected by disabilities   That is nearly 1/5 of the population of the United States.  Why does this information matter to you as a spa or salon owner?  It is essential to make sure that you are reaching out to and accommodating as many clients as possible.  Having your place of business be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant will help garner a portion of their $175 billion disposable income, thus improving business and your bottom line.

The message here is not to narrow your focus, but rather, to broaden it.  It is essential to make everyone feel welcome in your establishment.  Here are some suggestions, courtesy of Ron Pettit of Royal Caribbean Cruises, for making your space accommodating for those affected by disabilities:

  1. The first and last impression your clients have of your business is provided by your staff.  You can start making drastic changes simply by educating yourself and your employees on how to communicate effectively.  You can take a course locally or online that will explain disability etiquette, interaction, language and sensitivity awareness.
  2. Make sure that your furniture is disability accessible.  Massage and waxing tables that can be lowered to at least 17 inches are extremely helpful.  
  3. It can be difficult to understand how your facility is not designed for those affected by disabilities when you yourself are not affected.  You can best understand how to make changes by contacting an advocacy group and having a member walk around your location to make suggestions for changes.
  4. If apropos, affix a wheelchair sign to your entrance so that you can advertise the fact you are disability accessible.

Germs, Germs, Everywhere! A Quick Guide to Cleaning, Santizing, Disinfecting, and Sterilizing

Oh fall, how I love your cool nights, crisp air, and the onset of cold and flu season.... Wait, that's not right! I HATE the onset of cold and flu season! But it is one of those things that come with the changing of seasons and cooler weather.

Obviously, cold and flu season is not the only time you should think about cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting, and sterilizing in your spa or salon, but it is a great time to review your practices and make sure your salon or spa is protecting you, your employees, and your clients.

But wait. Cleaning... sanitizing... disinfecting... sterilizing... Aren't those just fancy words that mean the same thing? If you thought that, you thought WRONG! In your business, you need to make sure you are addressing ALL of the above!

Let's define each (according to Ultronics, a leading disinfectant manufacturer in the health and beauty industry):

Cleaning: removal of debris from the surface. An essential first step to disinfecting or sterilizing.
Sanitizing: lowering the number of microorganisms on non-living surfaces.
Disinfecting: chemical process that eliminates most microorganisms on non-living surfaces and implements.
Sterilization: a process that completely destroys all microbial life

Large surfaces, including chairs, beds, nail tables, styling stations, nail dryers, etc. should be disinfected between each client. Wiping these items down with a hospital-grade disinfectant such as Ultracare Disinfectant or Citrus II Germicidal Cleaner will help prevent the spread of germs from client to client.

Implements should be cleaned (to remove surface debris) and completely immersed in a hospital-grade disinfectant such as Barbicide for at least 10 minutes after each use.

**Don't forget to thoroughly clean all towels, sheets, and linens between each use!**

Let's face it - waxing is no fun. A Growing Salon/Spa Trend: Eyelash Extensions


I'm starting to see more and more of this popular trend everywhere. Not only are celebrities doing it, but regular salon and spa goers have caught on to this awesome service and are making regular visits to get it done. If you are not already offering eyelash extension services, you should! Not only will you bring in new clients, but even your existing clients will start being more frequent visitors!

Women wanting thicker, darker, longer, and more voluminous lashes is not something that is going to change anytime soon. There are also other ways to promote this trend besides just offering the eyelash extension services. You can also retail eyelash conditioners and serums! By making these items visible and available, clients will be more likely to inquire about it. Another great strategy would be to have your staff use the items themselves, so your clients can actually see the results! Heal, Relax and Comfort Your Clients with Aromatherapy


I swear that the best advice and information we receive comes directly from our fabulous clientele. Case-in-Point: My conversation this afternoon with Kristen of Susi Laura Massage Therapy.  

Fall Season brings about colds and congestion for all of us.  The congestion, especially, can turn the relaxing and revitalizing experience of a massage into one of complete discomfort.  The massage therapists at Susi Laura Massage Therapy, however, go above and beyond for their clients to make them as comfortable as possible.

Hair Coloring Assistance - There's An App for That!

For all of those women out there that don't know what hair color they should go with for their new hair color or for the stylists that may need a little help in assisting their clients on what color to choose, I'm going to let you in on a little secret.  There's an app for that!


L'OrĂ©al Paris has come up with an app available in Mac Apple Store for your Iphone or Ipad that will help people choose a color for their hair.  One way to use the app allows people to scan the barcode on their products to learn about the color, while the second and more beneficial part of this app for stylists is clients answer  a short questionnaire about what they want and then the app recommends colors.  So, by the time they come to you, the guesswork on what color shade they would like is taken out of the mix.
